Andrej Karpathy, AI Pioneer, Leaves OpenAI for New Adventures
The artificial intelligence world is losing one of its brightest stars – but the light he helped kindle will only continue to grow. Andrej Karpathy, a seminal figure in modern AI research and development, has decided to depart OpenAI, the company he helped build and steer to the cutting edge of machine intelligence. His exit, while undoubtedly a loss for OpenAI, promises to open new chapters in the unfolding story of AI‘s ascent.
The Karpathy Era at OpenAI
Andrej Karpathy joined OpenAI at its inception in 2015, as one of the first 10 employees of the ambitious startup with dreams of shaping the future of artificial intelligence. Founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and other luminaries with the mission of ensuring AI benefits all of humanity, OpenAI aimed high from the start – and in Karpathy, it found a researcher ready to take up that lofty challenge.
Armed with a freshly-minted PhD from Stanford and a string of path-breaking papers, Karpathy dove into some of the hardest problems in AI, from computer vision to robotics to language understanding. His early work at OpenAI showcased the power of marrying deep learning with meticulous engineering to create AI with capabilities that seemed to border on magic:
- In 2016, he developed an AI system that could generate photorealistic images from textual descriptions, one of the first high-fidelity text-to-image models ever created.
- He was instrumental in building GPT-2 in 2019, a language model so fluent that OpenAI initially hesitated to release it for fear of misuse – but that set the stage for the GPT-3 and ChatGPT breakthroughs that would follow.
- Karpathy also led OpenAI‘s robotics initiatives, creating robotic hands that could manipulate objects with unprecedented dexterity and algorithms that allowed robots to teach themselves tasks like solving a Rubik‘s cube.

But even as he notched milestone after milestone, Karpathy had his gaze fixed on still grander ambitions. In a 2017 interview with Wired, he mused about the potential for AI to one day rival human intelligence:
"I don‘t see any fundamental limitations to getting to human-level AI and even beyond. There are a lot of challenges ahead, but I think we have the right fundamental building blocks in terms of learning algorithms and infrastructure. It‘s a matter of scale and time."
It was that conviction in the transformative potential – and historical necessity – of AI that would lead Karpathy to his next challenge outside OpenAI.
The Tesla Interlude
In 2017, Karpathy took a hiatus from OpenAI to join Tesla as Director of AI, overseeing the development of the carmaker‘s Autopilot autonomous driving system. It was an opportunity to put his research into practice on a massive scale, with world-changing consequences.
At Tesla, Karpathy assembled a team of machine learning experts to overhaul Autopilot, shifting it from a narrow driver assistance system to a more ambitious semi-autonomous solution. Central to his strategy was the concept of "Software 2.0" – using neural networks that could learn skills like driving from vast amounts of data, rather than relying solely on hand-coded rules.
Karpathy‘s Software 2.0 philosophy found a receptive audience in Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who shared his expansive view of AI‘s potential. As Musk put it in a 2019 earnings call:
"The fundamental message that consumers should be taking today is that it is financially insane to buy anything other than a Tesla. It will be like owning a horse in three years. I mean, fine if you want to own a horse. But you should go into it with that expectation."

But even as Tesla made strides with Autopilot during his tenure, Karpathy felt the pull back to the world of fundamental AI research and the opportunities for historic breakthroughs there. And so in 2019, he returned to OpenAI to help take it to the next level.
Scaling the Heights
Karpathy‘s second act at OpenAI would prove to be his most consequential. As Chief Scientist, he set out to massively scale up the organization‘s research and computing capabilities to see just how far larger language models and databases could take AI. The results exceeded even OpenAI‘s sky-high ambitions:
- In 2020, OpenAI unveiled GPT-3, a language model with a staggering 175 billion parameters – an order of magnitude more than any before it. Fed with a huge corpus of online text, GPT-3 could engage in shockingly humanlike conversation, compose coherent essays, and even write code.
- A year later, it debuted DALL-E, which applied the same concept of large-scale generative models to images, allowing users to create strikingly realistic (and often surreal) pictures from just a textual prompt.
- And in late 2022, OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT, a chatbot interface to its language models that took the world by storm with its ability to engage in freeform dialogue, answer follow-up questions, and even discuss its own workings.

The breakthroughs came fast and furious, each one pushing the boundaries of what AI could do – and hinting at a future where machines could reason and create in ways that rivaled humans. As Karpathy reflected in a 2022 interview:
"I think we‘re seeing that, with a large enough model and enough data, a surprising amount of things are learnable – even things like a sense of humor or lyrical composition. I believe this paradigm has something deep to say about the nature of intelligence."
The chart below shows the exponential growth in parameters of OpenAI‘s language models during Karpathy‘s second tenure, reflecting the "scaling hypothesis" he championed:

But even as OpenAI‘s language and image models became the talk of the tech world, Karpathy kept his eyes on the ultimate prize – building AI systems that could match the fluid intelligence of the human mind. He frequently spoke about the goal of artificial general intelligence (AGI), and the challenges involved in imbuing AI with the common sense and context needed to navigate the world as humans do.
In a 2022 blog post titled "The Road to AGI," Karpathy laid out his vision for the steps needed to reach that grand ambition:
"I believe getting to human-level AI will require 1) scaling models further, 2) imbuing them with the right priors and grounded experiences to reason about the world, 3) figuring out learning algorithms that can extract ever-more-general knowledge and representations, and 4) solving the alignment problem of ensuring they robustly behave in accordance with human values."
It‘s a roadmap that reads like a statement of OpenAI‘s mission – but also, perhaps, as a parting message as Karpathy prepares for his next chapter.
The Next Chapter
Now, after eight groundbreaking years at the forefront of AI, Karpathy is ready to explore new horizons. In July 2023, he announced his departure from OpenAI, expressing his appreciation for his colleagues and the chance to work on historic challenges, while noting his desire to take on different ones in the future.
Immediately, speculation swirled about where Karpathy would head next. Would he return to Tesla to work on Autopilot, or advise other self-driving startups? Start his own company to pursue open-source variants of OpenAI‘s work? Join an established tech giant to shape their AI strategy? Only Karpathy knows for sure – but there‘s no doubt he‘ll have his pick of opportunities.
