Are Stars or CP More Important in Pokemon Go?

Hey fellow trainer! If you‘re like me, you‘ve probably wondered whether it‘s better to power up a Pokemon based on its Combat Power (CP) or its Appraisal stars. I used to only care about CP for battling, until I realized how important those stars are for indicating IVs and long-term potential!

In this comprehensive guide, we‘ll dive deep into what CP and IVs represent, when each one matters most, and how to balance the two when building your battle-ready Pokemon roster. Let‘s do this!

What Do CP and Stars Tell You?

First, a quick refresher on what CP and Appraisal stars indicate about your Pokemon:

• CP (Combat Power) – Shows the Pokemon‘s current battling strength. Higher CP = more damage dealt.

• Stars – Rates the Pokemon‘s IVs (Individual Values). More stars = better IVs = greater max CP potential.

CP changes when you Power Up or evolve the Pokemon. But IVs stay fixed and don‘t change.

The Math Behind CP and IVs

A Pokemon‘s CP is calculated from its base stats, IVs, and Power Up level.

The base stats are Attack, Defense, and Stamina. They are fixed for each Pokemon species.

IVs are bonus points randomly assigned to the base stats, ranging from 0 to 15 for each one. So IVs can add up to a maximum of 45 total (15/15/15 being 100%).

As you Power Up your Pokemon, its level increases, up to a max of 40.

At each level, CP is computed from the above stats. The formula gets a bit complex, but for our purposes: higher IVs will result in a greater max CP.

Let‘s see some examples!

CP Calculations

A Level 20 Mewtwo with perfect 15/15/15 IVs will have 2470 CP.

But a Level 20 Mewtwo with garbage 0/0/0 IVs will only have 2119 CP.

That‘s a huge difference of 351 CP between the worst and best Mewtwo at the same level!

Clearly those IVs matter.

So even though the CP looks high at Level 20, you can tell a lot about a Pokemon‘s potential by checking those IVs.

Let‘s take it further and see max CP based on IVs:

Wow – now the difference between 0% and 100% IV Mewtwo is a massive 1408 CP!

You can really see how IVs influence the max CP ceiling. I hope this drives home why IVs are so important!

Do IVs Impact Battle Performance?

You bet they do! Those hidden IV stats directly affect how much damage your Pokemon deals in battle.

Higher IVs lead to higher CP, which in turn increases damage output. There are also certain CP thresholds called "breakpoints" where maxing out IVs allows you to deal 1 extra damage per attack.

Let‘s walk through some examples:

Raiding a Tyranitar

Say you‘re short-manning a Tyranitar raid with 5 trainers. You have two Machamp to choose from:

• 98% IVs, CP 2850
• 60% IVs, CP 3000

The 3000 CP Machamp seems stronger at first glance. But the 2850 CP one with exceptional 98% IVs will actually output more DPS and help you win! Those IVs allow it to reach breakpoints that the 3000 CP Machamp can‘t.

This reveals the importance of IVs for min-maxing your raid counters. You always want the highest IV versions of the top counters like Machamp, Rampardos, Rayquaza etc. Their damage output benefits greatly from maximized IVs.

Climbing the PVP Ladders

Here‘s another example demonstrating the power of IVs for PVP formats like the Go Battle League:

My rank 1 PvP IV Medicham has an IV spread of 1/15/15. Total IV% is only 51%!

Yet it dominates even Medicham with higher IVs and CP in the Great and Ultra Leagues. Why?

Because those ideal PvP IVs allow it to hit crucial bulkpoints and outlast opponents. It can also power up to just under the CP cap.

So sometimes you actually want low IVs for PVP! Complicated, I know. But the takeaway is that IVs directly impact battling, and you should check them for both PVE and PVP.

When Should You Prioritize CP or IVs?

Now that we understand CP and IVs, let‘s discuss when to favor one over the other:

🌟 Prioritize High IVs for:

• Legendaries & rare Pokemon – Maxing IVs is crucial for top-tier attackers and defenders.

• Relevant PvE attackers – Raid counters benefit greatly from perfect IVs to hit breakpoints.

• Great/Ultra League PVP – Low Attack IVs and overall IVs ~0-80% are preferred.

• Pokemon you plan to invest in – High IVs increase the max CP ceiling.

• Trading – IVs get rerolled, so only trade high IV ones.

💪 Prioritize High CP for:

• Common, disposable Pokemon – Don‘t stress about IVs for these. Save dust/candy.

• Master League PVP – Max CP only league, so 100% IVs ideal here.

• Short-manning raids – Choose highest CP counters to win with minimal trainers.

• Quick evolutions – Evolve high CP if you need a battle-ready Pokemon ASAP.

• Gyms – Drop highest CP to demotivate fast. IVs don‘t matter.

Balancing CP and IVs

If you‘re lucky enough to have a Pokemon with both high CP and IVs, then jackpot! Some examples:

• I caught a Wild Dragonite with CP 3500+ and 96% IVs. This is incredibly rare and valuable!

• Hatched a Shundo (Shiny + Perfect) Metagross. Immediately became my #1 Mega Raid attacker.

• Traded a friend for a Lucky 98% Giratina Origin already powered up to 3000+ CP. It destroys in PvE and PVP.

So in summary:

How Rare Are Perfect and Zero IV Pokemon?

Pokemon with flawless 100% IVs are incredibly rare – you only have a 1 in 4096 chance of catching one in the wild!

So if you manage to catch a "4-star" Pokemon, make sure to favorite it and show it off. Some of my proudest perfect IV catches include:

I cherish these forever!

On the other end of the spectrum, Pokemon with 0% IVs (0/0/0) are even rarer. They cannot be hatched from eggs or come from raids/research either. My prized 0% trophy is a Wild-caught Shellder. 🐚

Both perfect 100% and flawless 0% IV Pokemon are coveted by collectors. If you catch one, hang onto it!

Ideal IV Spreads for Each League

Now that we‘ve covered why IVs matter and how rare perfect ones are, let‘s discuss ideal IV spreads for the GO Battle League formats:

Great & Ultra Leagues

Low Attack IVs are preferred, ideally 0-5. You also want decent Defense and HP IVs between 10-15. Overall IV% should be ~0-80%.

This allows you to maximize "bulk" – that is, survivability and defense. By keeping the CP low while boosting defense, you can outlast opponents.

I use an Ultra League Registeel with a rank 1 PvP IV spread of 0/15/13. Performs amazingly despite only 67% IVs!

Master League

Here you want 100% perfect IVs on everything to reach the max CP cap of 40. Some good Master League targets are:

• Mewtwo
• Dialga
• Giratina Origin Forme
• Melmetal
• Dragonite

Lucky and level 35+ weather boosted Pokemon are ideal, since they minimize the stardust cost of powering up.

Raids & Gyms

For PvE, you also generally want 100% IVs on your counters. But any IVs 80%+ are pretty good too. Prioritize the top meta species first.
