Surfshark Emerges as the Top VPN for Apple TV in 2025: A Cybersecurity Expert‘s Analysis
As a cybersecurity professional with over a decade of experience securing cloud data, I‘ve witnessed firsthand the rapid rise in cyber threats facing individuals and organizations. In today‘s hyper-connected digital landscape, using a virtual private network (VPN) has become essential for safeguarding your online privacy and security. This is especially true when using a streaming device like Apple TV that may lack built-in protection.
According to the latest data from Statista, there were over 1,400 data breaches in 2021 alone, exposing billions of sensitive user records. Meanwhile, a 2022 survey found that 3 in 4 people are concerned about their online privacy. These alarming trends underscore the urgent need for robust digital defenses.
When selecting a VPN for your Apple TV, it‘s crucial to choose a reputable provider that offers strong encryption, a strict no-logs policy, and a wide network of high-speed servers optimized for streaming. After rigorous testing and analysis, Surfshark emerges as my top recommendation for Apple TV users in 2024.
Why Surfshark is the Best VPN for Apple TV
Surfshark stands out from the crowded VPN market for several key reasons:
-
Unlimited Device Connections: Surfshark is one of the only major VPN providers to offer unlimited simultaneous connections, allowing you to protect every device in your household with a single affordable subscription. This is a huge advantage over competitors like ExpressVPN and NordVPN that limit you to 5-10 devices.
-
Easy Setup with SmartDNS: While Apple TV doesn‘t support native VPN apps, Surfshark makes it simple to configure its SmartDNS service on your Apple TV device. With clear step-by-step instructions, you can start accessing geo-restricted content from popular streaming platforms within minutes, without complex router setup.
-
Strong Security & Privacy: Surfshark safeguards your internet traffic with military-grade AES-256 encryption, with a choice of secure protocols including OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard. The company adheres to a verified no-logs policy, meaning it never stores any data about your online activities. Surfshark has also undergone independent security audits from reputable firms like Cure53.
-
High-Speed Streaming: In my tests, Surfshark consistently delivered fast, reliable speeds suitable for buffer-free HD and 4K streaming on Apple TV. While not quite as speedy as ExpressVPN, Surfshark‘s expansive network of 3200+ servers across 100 countries (including many optimized for streaming) ensures a smooth viewing experience.
-
Excellent Value: At just $2.49/month with a 2-year subscription, Surfshark offers unbeatable value for your money. This is significantly cheaper than ExpressVPN ($6.67/month) and NordVPN ($3.29/month), while still providing top-notch security and features.
To further illustrate the differences between these leading VPNs, I‘ve compiled a comparison table:
| Features | Surfshark | ExpressVPN | NordVPN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV Support | Yes (SmartDNS) | Yes (MediaStreamer) | Yes (SmartPlay) |
| Unlimited Connections | Yes | No (5 devices) | No (6 devices) |

Unlock Global Content While Maintaining Privacy
As streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video continue to expand their global footprint, many popular TV shows and movies are still restricted to certain countries due to licensing agreements. According to Comparitech, Netflix US offers nearly 1,400 more titles than Netflix UK.
This is where a VPN like Surfshark proves invaluable for Apple TV owners. By masking your real IP address and replacing it with one from your desired country, Surfshark allows you to easily access geo-blocked content while abroad.
Although streaming platforms generally discourage the use of VPNs in their terms of service, there are perfectly valid reasons for using one, such as maintaining your privacy, securing your connection on public Wi-Fi, or watching content from your home country while traveling.
It‘s worth noting that Apple TV continues to gain market share in the competitive streaming device landscape. Data from Statista indicates that Apple TV‘s usage among US consumers rose from 13% in 2020 to 17% in 2022. As more people turn to Apple TV for their streaming needs, the importance of using a reliable VPN like Surfshark to ensure privacy and access global content will only increase.
