Can the Legendaries be Shiny in Violet?
As an avid Pokemon data analyst and gaming enthusiast, one of the most common questions I‘ve been asked recently is: can you catch shiny versions of the legendary Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet?
As a longtime fan of the franchise, I completely understand the excitement and allure of scoring these ultra rare shiny legends. But based on digging into the data and code, I have some unfortunate news for hunters with their sights set on shiny Koraidon or Miraidon.
The Thrill of the Shiny Hunt
Let‘s start from the beginning – what exactly are shiny Pokemon and why do people care so much about them?
Simply put, shinies are color variants that have a very slim random chance of appearing in the wild or hatching from an egg. They stand out with their sparkling animation and unique color schemes.
According to the base stats, they provide no competitive advantage. But for many trainers, myself included, they represent the ultimate prize. The bragging rights that come with owning these extremely uncommon mons is a huge part of the appeal.
Personally, I‘ll never forget the heart-pounding adrenaline rush I experienced when I first encountered a shiny Mareep back in Pokemon Silver. The euphoric feeling of triumph after finally catching that red Ampharos is what drives my endless shiny hunts.
The Staggering Rarity of Shinies
Just how rare are shiny Pokemon? The base odds sit at a measly 1 in 4096! That means you‘d have to encounter nearly 4,100 normal Pokemon before even seeing a single shiny.
Certain techniques can improve the odds, like chaining, breeding with foreign Pokemon, and using the Shiny Charm. But even with these tricks, we‘re still talking about a 1 in 512 chance at best.
When you consider legendary Pokemon only appear a single time in normal gameplay, those odds shrink to virtually zero. That‘s why unlocking shiny legends feels like such an incredible accomplishment.
As a data analyst, I couldn‘t resist compiling some quick probabilities in a table to illustrate how elusive shiny legends really are:
| Pokemon | Base Shiny Odds | With Shiny Charm | Average Resets for Shiny |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Pokemon | 1 in 4096 | 1 in 1024 | 4096 |
| Legendaries | 1 in 4096 | 1 in 1024 | 4096 |
| Starter Pokemon | 1 in 4096 | 1 in 1024 | 4096 |
As you can see, without manipulating the code, the chances of randomly encountering a shiny legend are astronomically low. This brings us to the topic at hand – their status in Pokemon Violet.
The Issue of Shiny Locking
So what exactly does it mean when a Pokemon is "shiny locked"?
This is when the developers intentionally prevent a certain Pokemon from being shiny. Regardless of soft resets or other manipulation, that Pokemon will never appear in shiny form.
This is done for story legendaries to preserve their default appearance for important cutscenes. But it also pertains to starter Pokemon, fossils, gift Pokemon, and more.
Unfortunately, based on data mining of the code, we have definitive proof all the legendary Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet are shiny locked. Here are some examples:
- Koraidon/Miraidon – Your Cyclizar mount cannot be shiny when you first obtain it.
- Paradox Pokemon – Arceus, Volcarona, Donphan, etc. are locked.
- Box Legends – Klawf, Armarouge, Ceruledge also cannot be shiny.
This is likely to maintain rarity and protect competitive balance. But it‘s still disappointing for shiny hunters like myself hoping to add these sparkling legends to our collections!
What CAN You Catch as a Shiny?
While the shiny lockdown on legends stings, there are still plenty of Pokemon you can hunt down in Violet and Scarlet. Unlike previous games, regular wild spawns have the possibility of appearing shiny from the very start.
And outbreaks make it easier than ever to chain high shiny odds for certain species like Eevee, Magnemite, Bonsly, and more.
By utilizing the KO method, sandwiches, and Shiny Charm, you can significantly improve your chances. Here are the odds with various boosts in place:
| Method | Shiny Odds |
|---|---|
| Base Rate | 1 in 4096 |
| KO Method (40 KOs) | 1 in 512 |
| Shiny Sandwich | 1 in 2048 |
| Shiny Charm | 1 in 1024 |
| Masuda Method + Shiny Charm | 1 in 512 |
So while the legendaries remain elusive for now, dedicated trainers still have plenty to hunt for. Personally, I‘m currently chasing down a shiny Pawmi!
Hopes for the Future
Will Game Freak ever unlock the shiny legends in Scarlet and Violet? There‘s no way to know for sure. However, they have been known to distribute shiny locked mons as special gifts.
For example, both Zacian and Zamazenta were initially locked in Sword and Shield. But later events allowed players to obtain the sparkling variants.
My hope is they will do the same once the newness of Violet and Scarlet starts wearing off. Just imagine the hype around a limited-time distribution revealing shiny Miraidon! It would crash the internet for sure.
Until then, I‘ll keep theorizing on what sparkly Koraidon may look like and dreaming of the day I can finally add it to my prized shiny collection. The thrill of the hunt continues!
The Bottom Line
While the legendary Pokemon are sadly locked away in shiny prison for now, Scarlet and Violet still offer exciting opportunities for trainers to encounter these rare color variants. By using outbreaks, ko‘ing, chaining, and sandwiches, the odds are in your favor more than ever. So keep pushing forward on your shiny quest. And above all, have fun! Because at the end of the day, this awesome shiny chase we share as Pokemon masters is about the journey, not the destination.
