Can You Breed Miraidon and Koraidon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Hey there fellow Trainer! As someone who‘s been playing Pokémon since the days of Red and Blue on my GameBoy Color, I‘m just as excited as you are about the new Scarlet and Violet games. The cover legendaries, Miraidon and Koraidon, seem incredibly powerful. Naturally, we want to know if we can breed these rare Pokémon to get multiple copies, or even Shiny versions.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Like most Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, Miraidon and Koraidon cannot breed or produce Eggs. I know, it‘s a bummer, but let me break down exactly why that is:

Koraidon and Miraidon Don‘t Have Genders

In order to breed two Pokémon, you need one male and one female. But both Miraidon and Koraidon are classified as genderless or gender unknown. With no gender, they cannot mate and produce an Egg. This is the case for most Legendaries, with a few exceptions like Manaphy.

They‘re Paradox Pokémon, Not True Legendaries

Game Freak has introduced a new classification of rare Pokémon in Scarlet/Violet – Paradox Pokémon. These creatures are said to have traveled from other dimensions, times, or worlds. Similar to the Ultra Beasts from Sun/Moon, Paradox Pokémon cannot breed.

Koraidon and Miraidon are prime examples. Their Pokedex entries mention them coming from the past and future through some kind of wormhole. So while they have traits of Legendary Pokémon, they‘re technically not "true" Legendaries when it comes to breeding mechanics.

You Can‘t Get Eggs, Babies, or Alternate Formes

One of the best parts of breeding is getting baby Pokémon like Pichu and Budew. Unfortunately, there‘s no way to get baby versions of Koraidon or Miraidon since they cannot lay Eggs. You also cannot breed them to produce alternate formes. The only way to obtain these Paradox Pokémon is through the story events in Scarlet/Violet.

Trading Is the Only Option for Collecting Both

While you can‘t breed them, you can collect both by trading with other players. Pokémon Scarlet owners can trade their Koraidon for a Miraidon, while Violet players can trade their Miraidon for a Koraidon. This allows you to obtain both Legendaries in one game.

But what about getting a Shiny Koraidon or Miraidon? Sadly, those are also unavailable through breeding. Let‘s take a quick look at why Shiny versions are so elusive.

Shiny Koraidon and Miraidon Are Extremely Rare

The odds of encountering a Shiny Pokémon in the wild are 1 in 4,096. Unfortunately, Koraidon and Miraidon have additional restrictions:

• They are shiny locked for main story encounters.
• Any traded Koraidon/Miraidon cannot be Shiny.
• There‘s no way to soft reset for a different Shiny.

So basically, the only way to get a Shiny version is via random encounters after becoming Champion. And those have the standard full odds of 1 in 4,096. Making them very rare and valuable!

What About Other Legendary/Mythical Pokémon?

Koraidon and Miraidon aren‘t the only ones with breeding restrictions. Here‘s a quick rundown for other rare Pokémon:

• Mewtwo, Zacian, Zamazenta – Genderless, cannot breed
• Type: Null, Silvally – Genderless, cannot breed
• Keldeo, Marshadow – Genderless Mythicals, cannot breed
• Cosmog, Cosmoem – Breeding unavailable, only one per game

The exceptions are Manaphy and Phione. Manaphy can breed, but the offspring is always Phione. And Phione cannot evolve into Manaphy.

So What Should You Do?

Even though we can‘t breed Miraidon or Koraidon, don‘t get too down. Here are some tips:

• Appreciate their awesome designs and backstory.
• Work on your Pokédex and enjoy the journey.
• Trade to collect both Paradox Pokémon.
• Keep battling and encountering to try for a rare Shiny!
