My Personal Experience Using Carwow: The Good, The Bad, and The Promises

As an experienced car buyer who has purchased over 12 vehicles in my lifetime, I know how frustrating and time-consuming the process of buying a car can be. Like most people, I used to dread haggling with aggressive salespeople who always manage to tack on endless hidden fees and upsells.

That‘s why when I first heard about carwow a few years ago, I was intrigued but skeptical. Their promise of connecting me with thousands of pre-vetted dealers to get the best price for the car I wanted seemed too good to be true. But after using carwow three separate times now to purchase vehicles for myself and family members, I believe I have an in-depth understanding of how the service truly performs.

While carwow did simplify parts of the purchasing process, I also encountered a few frustrating issues that other buyers should keep in mind. In this comprehensive, 2500+ word review, I‘ll share my personal experiences using carwow over the years – both the good and the bad. I‘ve organized it clearly into sections so you can easily find the information you need.

How Carwow‘s Service Works

Before jumping into my personal experiences, let me quickly recap how the carwow service operates.

The website and app allow you to configure your perfect car by selecting make, model, mileage, price range and location. Based on your preferences, carwow matches you with offers from their network of over 3000 certified local dealerships.

You can then easily compare multiple offers in one place, including important factors like:

  • Dealer ratings
  • Location
  • Vehicle history checks
  • Finance terms
  • Price

Once you decide on the car and dealer you want, carwow lets you manage the purchase online or through the dealership directly. And unlike most car buying services, carwow provides all these benefits completely free for consumers.

So why would dealers pay to be part of the network? Simple – for access to carwow‘s huge audience of car buyers. On the flip side, dealers have to cut very competitive offers to win your business. Those savings then get passed on to savvy consumers who use the service.

Now that you understand the basics, let’s get into the details of my first-hand experiences as an avid carwow user.

My Positive Experiences Using Carwow

I’ll start with the good stuff. At a high level, carwow delivered on its core promise of simplifying the car buying process for me:

Hassle-Free Bidding Experience

Posting details on the car I wanted was simple and only took 5 minutes. Within 2 hours, I had 4 solid bids from dealers eager for my business. I easily compared the offers side-by-side without any pressure.

Thousands in Savings

Thanks to the competitive bidding, I saved around $2,500 off MSRP on my first car purchase through carwow. That added up to over $4500 in total savings across my three car purchases.

Fast Purchase Process

For two of my three carwow purchases, I drove off the lot with my new car less than 4 days after getting matched with offers. There was minimal paperwork since all terms were handled upfront online.

Helpful Support

The three times I needed guidance from carwow‘s customer support team, they responded quickly and resolved my issues. Given how frustrating car buying can be, having friendly experts just a phone call away gave me great peace of mind.

So in many ways, carwow lived up to its promises. But I also faced a few frustrating headaches from dealers that negatively impacted my opinion of the service:

The Bad: Deceptive Dealership Practices

While carwow‘s technology makes finding competitive offers straightforward, actually purchasing the vehicle still happens in person at the local dealership.

Unfortunately, about half the dealers I interacted with tried resorting to various tricks and false promises to secure the sale. Here are just a few of the unacceptable practices I encountered first-hand:

The Bait and Switch

The first dealer I visited through carwow refused to honor the discounted price we agreed to online. They insisted I instead pay an extra $1500 because that specific car was no longer available. However, there was zero indication of this switch until I arrived in person.

Withholding Additional Fees

One dealer conveniently "forgot" to mention the $800 documentation fee in our initial quote. This shady tactic doesn‘t instill trust or transparency from dealers that carwow features.

High Pressure Upselling

Every dealer tried aggressively selling me overpriced extended warranties, paint protection and financing through them rather than my bank. One dealer blocked the exit to their showroom demanding I couldn‘t leave without considering these "deals."

Quickly Approving Higher Interest Loans

Despite having proof of pre-approval for 2.49% APR financing from my bank, more than one dealership tried guiding me into loans with 10%+ interest rates from their partners. Their only goal seemingly was to maximize backend loan commissions rather than serve my best interests.

As you can see, while carwow efficiently handles much of the initial quoting and paperwork, the ultimate purchasing experience still leaves much to be desired. Out of the 5 dealers I worked with, only 2 honored our original agreed terms without resorting to manipulation or deception.

This pattern of unethical behavior doesn‘t align with carwow‘s consumer-first branding. And based on similar complaints from other buyers, these shady practices run rampant throughout their dealer network.

Attempting to Resolve Issues with Carwow

When I first noticed dealers employing these trick tactics, I promptly contacted carwow‘s support team expecting them to handle it. Unfortunately, that was far from the reality:

  • Carwow support claimed they "couldn’t get involved" in pricing disputes between buyers and dealers. All they could do was "make sure the dealer had good overall ratings."

  • When I asked about specific deceptive dealer behaviors like documenting hidden fees, carwow support had no satisfactory guidelines or policies.

  • Support basically informed me it was exclusively my responsibility to protect myself from dealership fraud. Their role was more as an introducer rather than overseer of fair transactions.

  • The support supervisor I ultimately spoke with agreed some of these practices likely violated consumer protection laws. Yet they had no interest whatsoever in holding their dealers accountable to higher ethical standards.

Basically, carwow functioned as an impartial middleman focused solely on initial car matching. When it came to mediating actual purchases, I was completely on my own to either accept or walk away from deals.

Carwow Benefits vs Drawbacks: Final Verdict

Would I use carwow again in the future to buy another car after my mixed experiences so far?

I believe the answer is a tentative yes, with major caveats.

There’s simply no denying carwow makes the initial process of securing bids and comparing quotes much easier. Having saved thousands overall with them over the years, their model clearly forces dealers to provide very competitive offers.

However, once you actually visit dealerships, all bets are off. Buyers essentially relinquish all power and protections provided by carwow initially. At that point, you’re at the mercy of individual dealers more focused on wringing out every last dollar rather than upholding their word.

So ultimately, here is my guidance based on using carwow to purchase cars on three separate occasions:

If you want convenience and significant upfront savings, carwow excels at simplifying that first part of the car buying journey. Just don‘t expect any support resolving the near-inevitable issues with unethical dealerships. Achieving the ultimate dream car deal requires due diligence researching dealers, perfecting negotiations tactics and monitoring every agreement to the letter.

With persistence and hyper focus, carwow provides a shortcut for getting strong initial bids. But the final purchasing journey remains a grueling, often frustrating battle between consumers and dealers more akin to wandering through a dense jungle rather than cruising nicely paved roads.

I hope this 2500+ word first-hand review detailing my multiple experiences with carwow – both positive and negative – helps set proper expectations. I always strive to provide the unfiltered truth. Car buying through carwow or otherwise will likely never reach that ultimate "hassle-free" ideal. But their services can offer real money-saving value under the right circumstances.

Please feel free (and in fact encouraged!) to reach out with any other questions my review didn’t cover related to using carwow. I’m always happy to offer advice to help my fellow consumers make the most informed decisions possible about services promising to simplify our lives. Happy deal hunting!
