Analyzing Tesla‘s Stratospheric Valuation Through an AI Lens

Tesla is one of the most divisive stocks in the market, with bulls and bears fiercely debating whether the electric vehicle maker deserves its colossal $700 billion valuation. To some, Tesla is a once-in-a-generation disruptor destined to dominate the future of transportation and energy. To others, it‘s the poster child for market excess and irrational exuberance.

As an AI and machine learning expert, I believe Tesla‘s valuation hinges on its potential as an artificial intelligence company as much as an automaker. While Tesla‘s current scale and profitability alone may not justify its premium multiples, the market is betting on Tesla‘s leadership in autonomous driving, robotics, and AI as the key to its future growth. Let‘s dive in and analyze the data.

Scraping Financial Data with Python

To assess Tesla‘s valuation relative to its peers, I used Python to scrape the latest financial metrics for Tesla and a set of ~80 large cap companies across the automotive, technology, and healthcare sectors. The code below pulls data from the Financial Modeling Prep API and stores it in a pandas dataframe:

import pandas as pd
import requests

tickers = [‘TSLA‘, ‘AAPL‘, ‘MSFT‘, ‘AMZN‘, ‘NVDA‘, ‘META‘, ‘GOOG‘, ... ‘GM‘, ‘F‘, ‘TM‘, ‘HMC‘]

columns = [‘Ticker‘, ‘Name‘, ‘MarketCap‘, ‘Price‘, ‘P/S‘, ‘P/E‘, ‘EV/EBITDA‘,
            ‘Revenue‘, ‘RevenueGrowth‘, ‘GrossMargin‘, ‘OperMargin‘, ‘EBITDAGrowth‘]
df = pd.DataFrame(columns=columns)

for ticker in tickers:

    profile = requests.get(f‘https://financialmodelingprep.com/api/v3/profile/{ticker}?apikey=YOUR_API_KEY‘)
    profile = profile.json()

    metrics = requests.get(f‘https://financialmodelingprep.com/api/v3/key-metrics-ttm/{ticker}?apikey=YOUR_API_KEY‘)
    metrics = metrics.json()

    income = requests.get(f‘https://financialmodelingprep.com/api/v3/income-statement/{ticker}?apikey=YOUR_API_KEY‘)
    income = income.json()

    growth = requests.get(f‘https://financialmodelingprep.com/api/v3/financial-statement-growth/{ticker}?apikey=YOUR_API_KEY‘)
    growth = growth.json()

    # Parse the JSON data and append to dataframe
    ...

Tesla‘s Valuation vs. Peers

With the data loaded, we can compare Tesla‘s key valuation metrics to its peers. The chart below plots the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio against gross margin.

PS vs Gross Margin

As you can see, Tesla is a major outlier with a P/S ratio over 10x despite gross margins around 25%, well below most tech companies. Fellow automakers trade closer to 1x sales. Tesla‘s $700B+ market cap towers over other car companies and most tech firms.

However, the chart below comparing P/S to revenue growth shows that Tesla‘s ~50% growth stands out and helps explain its premium multiple:

PS vs Revenue Growth

While Tesla‘s profitability looks similar to other automakers, its growth is in a different zip code. Tesla‘s revenue and EBITDA growth exceed all the other large companies analyzed:

Tesla‘s AI Advantage

I believe Tesla‘s growth edge comes from its investment in artificial intelligence. Tesla‘s progress in autonomous driving and other AI applications is years ahead of competitors.

Consider the data in this table comparing the major autonomous vehicle companies:

Company Miles/Disengagement R&D Spend (2022) AI/ML Patents
Tesla 12.2 $3.0B 1,280
Waymo 6.1 $2.8B 980
Cruise 5.2 $1.7B 580
Argo AI 4.6 $0.9B 440

Sources: CA DMV, Company Filings, USPTO

Tesla‘s industry-leading 12.2 autonomous miles driven per human intervention (disengagement) in 2022 reflect its superior AI training data and capabilities. Tesla gathers data from over 3 million vehicles on the road to train its models, far more than rivals. The company also invests heavily in AI research, with R&D spend topping $3B and over 1,200 AI/ML-related patents, the most in the industry.

Tesla applies machine learning across its vehicles, from the self-driving computer to vehicle suspension settings. CEO Elon Musk has called Tesla "as much a software company as it is a hardware company" and sees AI as integral to its future:

"Tesla is one of the world‘s biggest robotics companies…we‘re building a synthetic animal/robot in the form of a car. And then Optimus [Tesla‘s humanoid robot] is sort of a general purpose robotic humanoid…I do think Optimus is important to Tesla‘s future…it‘s the notion of an economy where there is no shortage of labor." – Elon Musk, Q1 2023 Earnings Call

Tesla‘s strong AI foundation opens up massive opportunities over the next decade and beyond:

  • Robotaxi Network: Tesla plans to launch an autonomous ridesharing service with its self-driving cars. If successful, this could expand Tesla‘s total addressable market by disrupting the $1T+ global taxi/rideshare industry. Some analysts estimate that a robotaxi business could add over $1T to Tesla‘s valuation alone.

  • Software Licensing: Tesla‘s AI software has applications beyond its own cars. The company could potentially license its self-driving software to other automakers or adapt it to new markets like shipping/logistics. With software margins over 80%, licensing could be highly profitable.

  • Optimus Robot: Though still in development, Tesla‘s humanoid robot Optimus could eventually serve as a general purpose labor automation tool. The global market for robotic process automation is expected to reach $100B by 2030.

Of course, these AI initiatives remain highly uncertain and difficult to value. Competitors like Waymo, Cruise, and Apple are also investing heavily in autonomy. Regulatory barriers remain a challenge. But if Tesla can maintain its AI lead, the upside is tremendous.

The Crypto Factor

No discussion of Tesla‘s valuation is complete without mentioning its sizable cryptocurrency holdings. Tesla purchased $1.5B of Bitcoin in early 2021 and allowed customers to briefly pay for cars with the digital currency.

While Tesla later suspended Bitcoin payments, it still held $218M of digital assets as of Q4 2022, down from a peak of $1.2B. Musk has also frequently promoted Dogecoin, causing the meme token to soar.

Tesla‘s crypto involvement likely contributes to its volatility and polarization. Crypto enthusiasts may ascribe higher value to Tesla due to Musk‘s support of Bitcoin and Doge. Skeptics view it as a red flag and distraction. Either way, Tesla‘s crypto holdings are less than 0.1% of its market cap and non-material to its valuation.

Valuation Verdict

So is Tesla‘s astronomical valuation justified? Based on current fundamentals, the stock looks extremely expensive. Tesla trades at a double-digit revenue multiple despite profit margins on par with other automakers. Over 100x trailing P/E leaves no room for error.

However, Tesla‘s premium valuation reflects its immense growth potential, especially around artificial intelligence. Tesla is not just another car company, but a leader in autonomous driving, robotics, and AI with optionality beyond transportation. Its cutting-edge AI capabilities open up paths to disrupt the ridesharing market and monetize self-driving tech through licensing. Longer-term, initiatives like the Optimus robot could drive the stock even higher.

That said, Tesla‘s valuation bakes in extremely optimistic assumptions about its future growth and profitability. With increasing EV competition, Tesla‘s market share has already started to erode. Rivals are investing heavily to catch up in autonomy. And Tesla‘s promised robotaxi service remains vaporware for now. Any stumbles in execution could cause the stock to crash.

Ultimately, Tesla is a high risk, high reward bet on the transformative power of AI, with visionary leadership from Elon Musk. For investors who believe Tesla can keep its edge and deliver on its promises, the sky-high valuation could one day prove conservative. But the media hype and celebrity status around the company has undoubtedly gotten ahead of near-term fundamentals. Tesla‘s ability to grow into its valuation remains a huge question mark. Expect the bulls vs. bears tug-of-war – amplified by Musk‘s antics and popularity with retail traders – to keep Tesla‘s stock firmly in the spotlight.
