As zombies shambled onto our screens with Dead Island 2‘s release, we joined the fray hoping to craft our ideal undead-slaying machine. However, at the character select screen we were met with distressing news – no option to customize our slayer‘s looks.

Choosing between six pre-made characters with no aesthetic changes is a grave disappointment. Part of the fun in a new game is designing ourselves as badass zombie killers! So it stings not having that creative outlet on a visual level.

But while we can‘t give our slayers makeovers, Dead Island 2 provides no shortage of meaningful customization options elsewhere. Through weapons, skills, outfits and buffs, we can radically transform our gameplay experience.

So set aside hopes of sculpting heartthrob faces or playing dress-up with body sliders. Let‘s explore deeply customizing what matters most – how we dish out destruction against the horde!

Know Thy Slayer, Know Their Strengths

With no character creator, selecting our slayer is an impactful choice that shapes our gameplay style. Each survivor has a distinct background that informs their design:

• Dani – Ex-cop and natural leader aiding allies
• Ryan – Military vet specializing in tanking damage
• Amy – Struggling addict with firearms expertise
• Carla – Brilliant engineer wielding electric weapons

Study the roster to pick someone resonating with your playstyle and personality. For co-op, clever pairing creates symbiotic strengths. A stealthy assassin like Jacob works well with a distraction tank like Ryan.

While we can‘t change our slayer‘s face or gender, choosing one that energizes our strategy is key. They aren‘t just skins – these survivors play radically differently. So select carefully!

Dress to Kill – Then Overkill

Fret not, fashionistas. While facial features are fixed, we can customize our style with slick outfit DLCs. The Gold and Deluxe editions come with the California Dreaming and Seeing Double packs featuring hip new looks.

• Beach casual, hip hop chic, biker punk – indulge your wardrobe wishes!* Diversity keeps the apocalypse fresh so mix and match trends.

Better yet, future outfits may offer gameplay perks like the Fortnite skins. Imagine ninja garb making you quieter or firefighter gear giving flame resistance! Aesthetics and strengths intertwining is a killer clothing combo.

Pimp Your Guns Like a Mad Scientist

Where Dead Island 2 truly shines is its weapom modification system. With crafting specs unlocked through progression, we can engineer hard-hitting zombie slaughter tools tailored to our taste:

• Damage Mods – Heavy-duty fittings like metal blades to simply obliterate enemies
• Elemental Effects – Lit them up with fire! Shock them senseless! Corrode their flesh!
• Specialized Ammo – Explosive shells, incendiary bullets, poison darts oh my!

Mix and match dozens of effects for ludicrous results. I made a freezing buckshot cannon that encased zombies in ice before shattering them to pieces! Endless creative potential resides in these insane mods should one dare to dream.

Assemble Your Deck to Smackdown Zombies

Skill cards grant slayer buffs unlocked through leveling up. With 20 unique skills per survivor, we have our choice of how to specialize:

• Passive Effects – Basic bonuses to health, stamina or carrying capacity
• Activated Abilities – Superpowers like AOE attacks or damage boosts

Certain cards synergize well, like combining Moving Target (+move speed) with Killer Instinct (damage buff when moving). The combo potential enables remarkable creativity in designing our skill deck.

I love respecing my entire build to wildly shift playstyles. One day a stealth assassin picking off stragglers. The next a whirling reaper shredding whole zones at once!

Bend the Rules Like Beckham With Curveballs

Innovative curveball buffs unlocked through challenges literally rewrite the game‘s rules in our favor. These wacky effects dramatically empower our slayer:

• Slow down time while aiming for perfect headshots
• Explode enemies on every third hit for chain reactions
• Enrage zombies against each other to lighten your load

Curveballs shake up gameplay through sheer novelty factor alone. But clever combinations with weapons and skills produce truly broken characters. One person‘s exploit is another‘s creative combo!

I made a build using curveballs that reduced damage while sprinting and performing takedowns. Racing from zombie to zombie chainsawing their heads off was a gory blast!

Imagination Over Graphics

At the end of the day, Dead Island 2 falls short of traditional customization by lacking aesthetic options. No manipulating bone structure or outfit overlays limits self-expression through looks.

However with mods, skills and curveballs, we have all the tools needed to individualize our gameplay. We become artists not through appearance, but through our beautiful monstrosities unleashed against the zombie hordes!

So while our characters always look the same, no two players will have identical experiences based on their wild customization combos. And that creative potential is far more meaningful than merely decorating our slayer like a Barbie doll.
