Fittingly, access to such an absurd yet cathartic weapon demanded incredible skill and dedication in those early days. Managing health items and ammo on Impossible difficulty is especially dire, with the most miniscule mistakes resulting in gut-wrenching defeat – or in Necromorph terms, being gutted for _real_. Only by mastering Dead Space‘s strategic dismemberment combat along with some flawless teamwork with Isaac‘s partner can you hope to emerge victorious. But somehow, in the end, we do emerge victorious. ## Sweet, Foamy Relief Upon finally witnessing those glorious credits after an Impossible run, the Leaderboard kindly informs diligent Necromorph eliminators that the **Hand Cannon** has been unlocked. Equipping it immediately replaces Isaac‘s iconic plasma cutter with what can only be described as a foam recreation of the Four Finger Death Punch. The second I fired the first shot on my inaugural Foam Finger run and heard Isaac gleefully yell **“Pew Pew!”** was the moment all remaining dread and tension lifted from my body. Suddenly the creepy halls of the Ishimura didn’t seem quite so creepy when I could turn any errant Slasher into a freakish pinata. My favorite Foam Finger hijinks came while backing through rooms I had just cleared of enemies, firing behind me wildly hoping to catch any stragglers by surprise. The confused gurgles from those Necromorphs told me the foam was doing its job beautifully. Of course, aside from relieving stress, the Foam Finger holds a special nostalgic place amongst series veterans who remember those early Dead Space 2 Hardcore runs. It represents how far we‘ve come taming these once unfathomable horrors into nothing more than fleshy practice targets. Personally, I‘ll be returning regularly to replaychapters with my foam and friendly in tow once again experiencing that wonderful contradiction – bone-chilling tension instantly evaporated by neon foam darts and giggling. So while the _Dead Space_ remake offers all manner of brutality for hardcore players, never forget that goofy salvation awaits those skillful and daring enough to tame the Impossible.
