Did Melissa Gilbert Lose a Baby? Inside the Actress‘ Triumphs and Tribulations
Many fans feel they know Melissa Gilbert intimately because she grew up on our TV screens as the plucky, adventurous Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie. Week after week, her warm smile lit up the Ingalls‘ little home on the prairie. But behind the scenes, young Melissa endured intense pressures and faced grown-up challenges even before her teen years. Through it all, she has shown enormous resilience and still radiates positivity today.
Melissa‘s Lonely Childhood
Melissa Ellen Gilbert was born on May 8, 1964 in Los Angeles. Her parents – Kathy Wood and David Darlington – divorced when she was young. Melissa and her older brother Jonathan were raised primarily by Kathy, an actress and dancer. Unfortunately, Kathy was often absent pursuing her career.
In her memoir Prairie Tale, Melissa describes being "lonely" and "isolated" frequently as a child. Her mother also struggled with alcoholism and visited Melissa sporadically. This upbringing clearly contributed to Melissa acting out later. She desperately craved stability and support.
Discovering Her Passion for Performing
Melissa caught the acting bug early from her mother. At just 6 years old, she appeared in a TV commercial for Alpo dog food. This kicked off her steady career in commercials throughout childhood.
When she was 8, Melissa landed the life-changing role of Laura Ingalls on Little House. She filmed the pilot and moved with her mother to Simi Valley for filming. This provided some much-needed structure. Melissa recalls this as the first time she felt "part of a family" on set with Michael Landon, Karen Grassle and the rest of the cast.
Rebellion and Heartbreak as a Teen
The pressures of fame and Melissa‘s turbulent home life brewed a recipe for rebellion in her teens. She lashed out against her perfect prairie image by dating older men. At just 17, Melissa began an intense relationship with Rob Lowe. She fell head-over-heels and was devastated when it ended shortly after.
"I was so brokenhearted, I thought I would die," she wrote in her memoir.
On the rebound, she had a brief romance with Tom Cruise in 1981 when he was still just an aspiring actor.
"We went for a walk down this little quiet street in Studio City at night," Gilbert told Andy Cohen. "The rest of what happened, I can‘t share! I was a very good girl back then!"
Early Marriage and Starting a Family
In 1988 at age 24, Melissa married 27-year-old actor Bo Brinkman, who had a role on Little House. Right after their storybook wedding, heartbreak followed. Melissa shared in her memoir:
“I got pregnant on my honeymoon, lost the baby six weeks after we were married and didn’t get pregnant again for seven years. I felt like a total failure every 28 days when I wasn’t pregnant.”
This sad event forever shaped Melissa. Finally in 1994, she gave birth to son Dakota Brinkman. Motherhood brought profound joy, but it did not save her crumbling marriage. Melissa filed for divorce before Dakota‘s first birthday.
Whirlwind Second Marriage
Just months later, Melissa met Bruce Boxleitner, an actor 12 years her senior. They connected instantly on the set of the 1995 TV western Sweet Justice. Melissa gushed:
“It’s fascinating and conjures up all kinds of emotions in me I didn’t know I had,” she told People.
Melissa became pregnant right away and they married quickly that year. In 1997, they welcomed son Michael Boxleitner.
For over a decade, the couple supported each other‘s careers and raised their blended family. Melissa stepped up enthusiastically as step-mom to Boxleitner‘s two older sons Sam and Lee. But the relationship deteriorated. After several separations, Melissa filed for divorce in 2011.
Spiraling Downward with Substance Abuse
Behind the scenes, Melissa secretly struggled with substance abuse for decades before getting sober. She began smoking marijuana as a teen on Little House. In her 20s, a painful back injury led to an addiction to prescription opioids. Alcohol abuse followed as she used it to "numb everything."
In 2009, Melissa made the brave decision to open up about her addiction. She told Today:
“I’m an alcoholic. I’m addicted to pot.”
The turning point came when a friend found Melissa passed out drunk in her dog‘s bed, unable to get up. She checked into rehab and has now been proudly sober over a decade.
Melissa candidly shares her experience to help others, explaining:
“Addiction is a disease. It’s not a matter of willpower.”
Health Crises Take a Toll
In January 2012, Melissa suffered a scary fall on a kitchen table while cleaning that severely injured her head and neck. This caused spinal cord compression and recurring headaches. That same year, she cracked her skull after a second concussion on Dancing with the Stars.
Melissa has undergone three spinal fusion surgeries with excruciating recovery. Unfortunately, the third surgery failed, leaving her dependent on a wheelchair at times.
Through it all, she demonstrates enormous grace and grit. Melissa advocates for disability rights and continues taking on acting roles when possible.
Ups and Downs of Finances and Fame
Considering Melissa‘s early success, some fans wonder why her net worth is only estimated around $500K. For comparison:
- Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary Ingalls) – $1.5 million
- Alison Arngrim (Nellie) – $1 million
Several factors contributed to Melissa‘s financial situation not matching her fame:
- She earned just $500 per Little House episode
- Typecasting made it hard to get roles after the show ended
- Failed marriages and health problems derailed her career
- Substance abuse also inhibited her success and earnings
However, Melissa focuses now on the positive and gives back generously. She has served leadership roles with the Screen Actor‘s Guild, the Children‘s Hospital Los Angeles and the AIDS Project.
Melissa‘s passion now is teaching acting through her website. She explains:
“I love supporting other actors and helping guide them to succeed.”
My Take on Melissa‘s Journey
In my view, Melissa Gilbert‘s willingness to be vulnerable and share her struggles makes her a role model. She embodies perseverance and proves it‘s never too late to pivot your life in a positive direction.
Despite challenges that would defeat many – addiction, chronic pain, failed relationships – Melissa still exudes an inspirational spirit and warm generosity.
After overcoming so much, she focuses her energy on supporting others. Melissa‘s life story provides an important reminder that we all stumble and fall. What matters is choosing to get back up again and again. That resilience defines Melissa‘s journey.
