Does Nicki Minaj Still Have Ties to Cash Money Records?
As of 2024, it remains ambiguous whether Nicki Minaj is still signed to hip hop powerhouse label Cash Money Records or if she has cut ties with co-founders Bryan “Birdman” and Ronald “Slim” Williams. Let’s closely examine the current relationship between the leading female rapper and the notorious record company.
Nicki‘s Phenomenal Success
First, it’s important to establish Nicki Minaj as one of the most successful women in all of hip hop, with an incredible track record of hits. Since breaking out with her 3x platinum-selling 2010 debut Pink Friday, Nicki has ruled the rap game. She’s earned over 100 major award nominations, winning dozens of trophies including multiple MTV VMAs, American Music Awards, and Billboard Music Awards.
To date, Nicki boasts five platinum or multi-platinum studio albums, with 19 top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Her best-charting hits include “Super Bass” (2011), “Starships” (2012), “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Ariana Grande (2014), and “Say So” (2020). In over a decade at the top, she has shifted well over 5 million album units in the US alone.
Nicki’s only comparable contemporaries in terms of female rap success are Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill. But Nicki surpasses even those icons in terms of breadth of popular hits across several eras. Simply put, her reign is historic for any female MC.
Signed to Cash Money Since 2009
Nicki first signed with Cash Money Records in 2009 as a protege of Lil Wayne. Cash Money was founded back in 1991 by brothers Bryan “Birdman” and Ronald “Slim” Williams. While officially an independent label, Cash Money‘s music is distributed via Republic Records, owned by industry giant Universal Music Group.
All four of Nicki’s studio albums to date – Pink Friday (2010), Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), The Pinkprint (2014) and Queen (2018) – have been released jointly by Cash Money and Republic. Based on label affiliation alone, then, it appears Nicki remains signed to the infamous Birdman‘s company.
Clues Point to Behind-the-Scenes Conflict
However, there are signs and rumors of conflict brewing between the rap queen and her label. While no formal announcement of a split has been made, Nicki has hinted at dissatisfaction with Cash Money in lyrics and on social media.
She supported fellow Cash Money artist Lil Wayne publicly when he sued Birdman and the label over withheld royalties in 2018. On Twitter, Nicki stated “To know that Wayne poured his heart and soul into a label on the back of Dead Prez and UGK, only to be [expletive] over is sad.” This tweet suggested she could relate to Wayne‘s issues with Cash Money short-changing its artists.
Lyrics on her 2018 song “Barbie Dreams” also target Birdman directly with the line “Birdman four billion, how you let Tunechi show you up?” This references Lil Wayne surpassing Birdman‘s net worth and the rift over Wayne allegedly not being paid properly.
Ongoing Label Controversies
Cash Money Records has developed a reputation for shady business practices and mistreating their artists and producers financially.
In 2012, acclaimed producer Bangladesh sued Cash Money for over $500,000 in unpaid royalties on Lil Wayne’s hit single “A Milli.” In 2014, former Cash Money artist Busta Rhymes revealed he left the label due to being stiffed on royalties. In 2018, rapper Tyga sued Cash Money for unpaid profits and trying to sabotage his career.
Lil Wayne himself sued Birdman and Cash Money in 2015 for a whopping $51 million in withheld artist royalties and Label profits. After years of litigation, Wayne eventually settled out of court in 2018. According to reports, he recouped over $10 million from Universal Music Group and no longer has any association with Cash Money Records.
Given this pattern of misconduct, it is not surprising that Minaj may have had her own poor experiences with payment behind the scenes.
What Does This Mean for Nicki‘s Masters and Finances?
Typically, major label recording contracts heavily favor the label over new artists. We can reasonably assume Nicki, like most Cash Money artists, does not own her master recordings. This means she misses out on licensing revenue and other income streams that go to the label in perpetuity.
However, Nicki clearly negotiated a better deal than the standard artist contract, given her tremendous leverage as the label‘s biggest female star. She likely earns a higher royalty rate – around 20% of music sales, 50% of merchandise, and other improved terms.
We know this because Nicki has amassed an immense estimated net worth of $100 million. She supplement her music with extremely lucrative endorsement deals, a book deal reportedly worth seven figures, and her “Nicki Minaj Collection” clothing line. Still, music remains her primary income source.
What Should Nicki Do Next?
If Nicki does not outright own her recordings, I believe she would be wise to try to negotiate their return from Cash Money/Republic. Many top artists like Taylor Swift have fought for and won back control of their master rights. Given Nicki’s superstar status, she has enough leverage and capital to buy them back.
Owning her masters would allow Nicki to license songs for films, TV, and advertising at a much higher profit margin. She could also bundle recordings differently, doing limited edition vinyl pressings, greatest hits albums, or other reissues more freely.
Additionally, Nicki should work to retain ownership for all future work. Recording on her own terms, either independently or via a distribution deal, is likely her best move rather than answering to a major label.
The bottom line is Nicki Minaj appears frustrated by her current label situation but maintains ties to Cash Money Records for now. Given her phenomenal talent and business savvy, I expect her to make strategic moves in the coming years to maximize profits from her hard-earned success.
