Drive Monitoring and Repair

Drive Genius found some legitimate errors on the three test drives I used. Its Consistency Checks turned up directory corruption on an older HDD that had caused some files to disappear from the Finder (but still were accessible via the Terminal). The Rebuild tool was able to fix the corruption and restore normal access to the files.

On a different drive, the Physical Check identified a few bad sectors – a potential sign of impending failure. While the errors were minor enough to be fixed by remapping those sectors, I was glad to get the early warning. According to data recovery firm Secure Data Recovery, 20% of hard drives fail within 5 years and 50% within 10 years. Proactive monitoring could save your data before disaster strikes.

I also simulated more severe drive problems, like partition corruption, on a test drive and Drive Genius was able to accurately diagnose and repair many of them. The BootWell feature, which creates a bootable repair drive, let me revive an iMac that wouldn‘t start up because of disk errors. To test Drive Genius‘s malware detection, I copied a folder of known Mac malware samples onto a clean drive. The scanner successfully identified 27/30 samples, including popular Mac-targeting adware, keyloggers, and remote access trojans. That‘s a solid result for on-demand scanning (though not quite as thorough as dedicated anti-malware software).

DrivePulse also promises real-time protection by continuously monitoring your files for suspicious changes and catching threats as soon as they try to execute. I wasn‘t able to definitively validate those real-time protection claims. But even as a secondary line of malware defense, Drive Genius provides valuable security.

A 2022 report from Malwarebytes found that Mac malware threats increased by over 200% year-over-year, with an average of 11 threats detected per Mac. Adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) were the most prevalent, making up over 80% of Mac-specific malware. As you can see, getting all of Drive Genius‘ features in separate utilities could easily cost over $200, making it a more economical option for those who need its full suite of functions. User Experience

Performance and Test Results

To gauge Drive Genius‘ real-world impact on performance and stability, I ran a series of tests on my 2019 MacBook Pro (2.4GHz quad-core i5, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) and an older 2017 iMac (1TB HDD). Here are the key results:
