Mastering Final Fantasy 16‘s "Cut From the Cloth" Side Quest

As an experienced FF16 player with over 50 hours invested, I‘ve completed the "Cut From the Cloth" side quest multiple times. Each playthrough reveals more backstory lore and rewarding character interactions. That‘s why I want to provide the definitive guide to mastering this unique mission.

The Set Up – Who, What and Where

Shortly after reaching the Hideaway zone, speak with Hortense near the stores. She will explain the plight of two young Branded women needing cloth for new outfits. Since the Branded face heavy discrimination, Hortense asks you to fetch the materials from Northreach instead.

Your objectives:

  • Obtain 1 Bolt of Red Cloth
  • Obtain 1 Bolt of Blue Cloth

Rewards for completion include:

  • 720 EXP
  • Improved reputation with Hideaway residents (+15)

With the quest initialized, let‘s breakdown how to efficiently complete it.

Procuring the Cloth – Step-By-Step Walkthrough

Here is the optimal route through this quest based on my experience:

  1. Fast travel to Northreach Commercial District
  2. Enter the Draper‘s storefront
  3. Speak to the Draper behind the counter
  4. He will take the writ but inform you the cloth is unavailable right now
  5. Exit back onto the streets and you will witness a commotion nearby
  6. Aid the Merchant Caravan Owner against two bandits
  7. Target the melee-focused Killer first as he deals more damage up close
  8. Defeat both highwaymen in combat to rescue the convoy leader
  9. Return to the Draper who has now gained the requested cloth bolts
  10. Collect Red Bolt of Linen (Quality: 5/5) x1
  11. Collect Blue Bolt of Linen (Quality: 3/5) x1
  12. Give Hortense the good news back at the Hideaway!

With the combat-heavy portion complete, wrap up the last leg by speaking with the quest‘s inicioator.

Analyzing Your Choices – It‘s All About Roleplaying

When you supply Hortense with the cloth, she also rewards you with an additional Black Bolt of Linen for your efforts. At this point, Hortense comments that she actually has enough materials to craft three full outfits now!

She then asks your preference on which cloth you find "most to your liking" between three luxury options:

A) Black Embroidered Linen
B) White Continental Silk
C) Lush Red Velvet

  • This final multiple choice question doesn‘t change quest rewards. But it does present a fun roleplaying opportunity!

For example, my warrior-mage was inclined to pick the Red Velvet cloth based on the following character backstory and motivations:

  • As a child, he admired the beautiful red capes on Rosarian mage-knights
  • Red clothing fits his headcanon ambition to become a battlemage protecting the weak
  • He wants to honor his own lost love who wore red ribbons in her hair
  • Velvet‘s luxury suits his pride in elevating his peasant origins to noble status

Conversely, a kindly priest type may prefer the pure White Silk to represent healing and grace. While a shadowy assassin may desire Black Linen to intimidate foes.

So choose whatever option makes sense for fleshing out your FF16 protagonist!

Conclusion – Additional Side Quest Rewards

Completing "Cut From the Cloth" takes only 7-15 minutes and nets some nice early game rewards. But more importantly, it expands lore on the plight of Valisthea‘s Branded underclass. It also boosts Hideaway faction reputation, enabling additional quests and item discounts.

I highly recommend tackling this and other side content to shape your character‘s identity through roleplaying choices. Now get out there and craft your warrior‘s signature look!

What cloth did you end up choosing for your hero? I‘m curious why in the comments!
