Mastering Your Stats in Ark: Survival Evolved
So you‘ve spawned on the island, tamed your first dodo, and now you‘re ready to start leveling up your character. But with so many stats to choose from, how do you know which ones to focus on? As an experienced ark survivor, I‘m going to walk you through the essential stats that will help you conquer every biome, fight the toughest creatures, and dominate your server.
An Overview of Stats and Level Caps
There are 9 primary stats in Ark that you can invest level-up points into:
- Health
- Stamina
- Oxygen
- Food
- Water
- Weight
- Melee Damage
- Movement Speed
- Fortitude
On official servers, wild creatures can reach up to level 450, giving them 449 stat points to distribute. Tamed creatures gain bonus levels, meaning they can reach level 450+73, for 523 total stat points!
For your character, the base level cap is 105, which grants 104 engram points. This can seem limiting at first, but take advantage of external buffs like food recipes, equipment, and creatures to augment your base stats further.
Unofficial servers often have boosted rates, allowing much faster leveling and higher final stats. We‘ll cover how to optimize your build whether you‘re on a standard 1x or fast 10x server.
Early Level Priorities
When you first spawn in naked and afraid, you‘ll want to focus on improving these core stats:
- Health – Getting 100-200% melee damage boost in the early levels will drastically improve your survivability. Always target health first.
- Stamina – Around 200 stamina lets you sprint a decent distance and boosts swim speed. Reduce points once you have good armor.
- Weight – Get this to 200-300 quickly. Weight is useful throughout the entire game.
- Fortitude – 20-30 points gives decent environmental protection. Allows entering the snow biome.
- Movement Speed – Just 10-20 points early on makes a noticeable difference in mobility.
Here‘s a sample 15 level allocation I would recommend for a balanced start:
- Health: +50 points
- Stamina: +20 points
- Weight: +30 points
- Fortitude: +10 points
- Movement Speed: +15 points
With these core stats raised, you‘ll be prepared to start building up, exploring further, and taking on more dangerous creatures. Health and weight will always be useful, so keep investing in them at a steady rate.
Mid Game – Expanding your Capabilities
Once you‘ve built a starter base and acquired some basic tames, you can start to specialize by investing in these stats:
- Oxygen – 30 points lets you dive underwater for over a minute, opening up deep sea exploration and loot.
- Melee Damage – Every few points significantly increases your melee combat ability with weapons.
- Movement Speed – Bring this up to around 130-150% to outrun dangers like Carnotaurus and Tyrannosaurus.
- Fortitude – Hit around 40 points to resist the frost and heat completely.
Here are some benchmark stats to target by level 50 on a normal server:
- Health: 200-300%
- Stamina: 150%
- Oxygen: 30 points
- Weight: 200-300%
- Melee Damage: 100-150%
- Movement Speed: 130-150%
- Fortitude: 40 points
Remember to keep pumping health, melee, and weight too – these will always be useful!
Optimizing Stats on Custom Servers
On servers with boosted XP and stat rates, you can progress much faster. Here are tips for high rate servers:
| Level Rate | Suggested Early Stat Distribution |
|---|---|
| 3x | Focus on weight first, then health/melee/stamina |
| 5x | Even more points into weight, 200 health, rest in damage |
| 10x+ | All weight to carry tons of resources, rest in melee damage |
Since you‘ll level up rapidly, don‘t worry about spreading points too thin early on. Get weight up to open up more carrying capacity right away, then pump melee damage after a baseline of health.
Late Game Specialization
By level 80-100, it‘s time to specialize with these stat distributions:
The Fighter
- Health: 300-400%
- Melee Damage: 300%+
- Movement Speed: 200%
- Stamina: 200-300%
- Fortitude: 60+
You‘ll be able to deliver devastating blows in melee combat while still able to chase down enemies and survive hits. Carry some spears or swords to take advantage of your damage output.
The Underwater Explorer
- Oxygen: 200+
- Movement Speed: 180-200%
- Health: 250% minimum
- Weight: 300%+
- Fortitude: 80+ (for cold resistance)
Traversing the deep oceans in search of pearls and oil will be a breeze with boosted oxygen and speed. Weight allows carrying more loot back to base.
The Resources Collector
- Weight: 400%+
- Fortitude: 60+
- Health: 200%+
- Stamina: 200%
- Melee Damage: 200%
With insane carrying capacity, you‘ll haul thousands of wood, stone, and metal back from every trip. Good melee damage lets you harvest it quickly.
Mutations & Level Cap Exceeding
Mutations randomly occur when breeding dinos, giving a chance to get bonuses for stats like health, melee damage, and weight. By selectively breeding mutations over generations, you can create super dinos exceeding the normal stat caps!
For example, Rexes usually cap out around 40,000 health. But through careful mutation stacking, you can achieve Rexes with 60,000, 80,000, or even 100,000+ health! The same applies for melee damage and other stats. A bit of luck and patience goes a long way.
Respeccing with Mindwipes
If you want to revamp your stat choices, craft a Mindwipe Tonic at the cooking pot to reset your points. Then you can re-invest them from scratch. Mindwiping can be useful:
- When switching roles, like from a builder to a fighter
- Before a boss fight to focus on health and damage
- To correct mistakes from early game choices
- When moving to a new map with different stat needs
Don‘t be afraid to respec and re-optimize your stats for the task at hand.
Temporary Stat Boosts
There are also consumables and gear you can use to give temporary boosts:
- Custom Food Recipes – Making custom delicacies gives short-term boosts to health, speed, damage, and more.
- Equipment – Flak armor improves cold protection. Riot gear boosts health. Scuba raises oxygen.
- Augmented Narcotics – Provide short boosts to speed, damage, or resistance.
- Battle Tartare – Gives a % boost to melee damage and resistance.
- Focal Chili – Boosts crafting speed and exp gain temporarily.
Situational consumables like these can give your stats a quick bump when needed most.
Parting Words
I hope these tips help you make smart, strategic choices when leveling up your character in Ark. Prioritize health, weight, and melee damage, and specialize your stats to excel at your role of choice. Take advantage of mutations, mindwipes, recipes, and gear to push your capabilities even further. Soon you‘ll go from beach bob to ark overlord. Stay persistent and dominate those dinosaurs!
Let me know if you have any other stat questions. Happy surviving!
