That‘s less than a 0.05% survival rate! You‘ve got better odds playing high-stakes Quidditch or Russian Roulette.

To put into perspective just how deadly AK is:

• The Cruciatus Curse has a 2% survival rate – 40 times higher than Avada Kedavra!
• Falls from broomsticks at 300+ feet have a 5% survival rate.
• EVEN Basilisk venom, which has no known cure, has a 11% survival rate thanks to Phoenix tears.

But against the merciless Killing Curse? You‘re pretty much toast if it strikes you square on. Only exceptional magic has proven capable of shielding someone from instant death.

Harry Potter – AK Survivor #1 Thanks to His Mother‘s Love

The first and most famous wizard to survive Avada Kedavra is none other than The Boy Who Lived himself – Harry Potter.

As an innocent 15-month old baby, Harry was struck by a direct Killing Curse cast by the Dark Lord Voldemort himself on that fateful 1981 Halloween night. This should have assuredly killed Harry.

After his Killing Curse reversed and struck him instead of infant Harry, Voldemort‘s body was destroyed and his power broken. By all means, he should have died that fateful night.

Yet a remnant of Voldemort‘s soul lingered, allowing him to eventually regain a physical form.

So how did the Dark Lord cheat death when his own unblockable Killing Curse reflected back at him?

The answer lies in Voldemort‘s six Horcruxes – vile objects containing fragments of his splintered soul, hidden away in secret locations.

By splitting his soul through acts of supreme evil and placing the pieces into Horcruxes, Voldemort took himself further down the path to immortality than any wizard before him.

When Voldemort struck down Harry‘s parents and then tried to kill Harry, he unintentionally created a seventh Horcrux – as parts of his fractured soul attached themselves to the only living being left in the Potters‘ house.

That being was Harry himself.

So while Voldemort‘s body perished, the segment of his soul embedded within Harry acted as an anchor preventing him from fully dying. Quite twisted really!

Phoenixes – The Third AK "Survivor"

In the Order of the Phoenix book, Dumbledore‘s loyal phoenix companion Fawkes heroically swallows a Killing Curse volleyed directly at his master by Voldemort.

The curse makes Fawkes combust into flames instantly…yet he is reborn again from the ashes just moments later!

This is thanks to Fawkes being a magical immortal bird capable of regenerating after death. Avada Kedavra will destroy their current form, but they resurrect and recover.

So phoenixes could technically be considered the third being capable of "surviving" the Killing Curse due to their powers of reincarnation.

Their potential to soak up one or more direct Avada Kedavras could make phoenixes invaluable guardians against Dark wizards. Certainly something for your average Light wizard to consider having in their back pocket!

Could Any Other Magical Beings Survive The Killing Curse?

Dementors – As soul-sucking monsters, they don‘t even have physical bodies to destroy. So Avada Kedavra likely would pass right through them harmlessly.

Giants – Possessing incredible toughness and resilience, giants may be able to temporarily absorb a Killing Curse or slow down its effects due to their larger frames. But unlikely they could fully shake it off.

Dragons – Their scales provide some protection against spells, but probably not enough to shield them from the raw power of Avada Kedavra. Their one advantage is quick flight to dodge incoming curses.

Basilisks – With immense natural armor that can deflect spells, and venom that parses down magic, basilisks could stand the best chance of blunting a Killing Curse. But they‘d need to take cover to have a chance of enduring multiple strikes.

Inferi – As reanimated corpses, destroying their "body" would be redundant. But the curse may sever whatever magic animates them. So Avada Kedavra would essentially terminate an Inferius.

House Elves – Their powerful magic may allow elves to teleport away and narrowly evade the Killing Curse at the last millisecond. But no evidence they can take a direct hit.

So my verdict – phoenixes remain the only non-human we‘ve seen withstand Avada Kedavra due to their regenerative immortality. But magical creatures with certain attributes may fare better than your average wizard if struck by a Killing Curse. More research needed!

The Killing Curse causes instant cessation of heart and brain activity. No chance for the body or mind to fight back or resist. Simply immediate affliction of death.

This terrible curse tears the soul from the body, severing one‘s earthly ties. As no proper ritual is followed like the benign death experienced by an Ordinary Wizarding Level graduate.

Avada Kedavra operates directly on the soul, forcing it from the earthly plane – which is why there are no visible marks or injuries on the victim‘s body. Their life essence is simply snuffed out, similar to blowing out a candle.
