How Much Does a Dungeon Cost in Destiny 2? A $20 Investment Well Worth It

The upfront cost for a new Destiny 2 dungeon is $20 USD. This grants access to the dungeon for all characters on your account. While pricy compared to some content, I believe the dungeon pass represents one of the best values in Destiny 2 for hardcore players. Here is a detailed look at why.

Dungeons Provide High-End Loot

Dungeons feature unique loot pools with some of the most coveted gear in Destiny 2. For example:

  • Gjallarhorn (Grasp of Avarice dungeon)
  • Artifice Armor (Master dungeon farming)
  • Preydeth‘s Revenge (Duality dungeon)
  • Waking Vigil and Epicurean (Prophecy dungeon)

This high-stat armor and top-tier weapons are worth grinding for. Dungeons offer the most efficient way to target farm specific gear.

Dungeons Cost Less Than Raids

Accessing a raid requires owning the related expansion, which can cost up to $40. Dungeons only require a $20 pass, making them more accessible.

Dungeons also take less time than full raids, with most dungeon runs finishing in 30-45 minutes with an experienced team. This allows more runs for your time.

Dungeon Content Lasts All Year

While a dungeon may only take a few hours to complete, the allure is repeating it across seasons to farm rolls and master versions.

Each $20 pass provides 2-3 new dungeons lasting an entire year. That‘s a lot of playtime for your investment compared to shorter seasonal content.

Dungeons Are The Perfect Difficulty

Dungeons walk the line between challenging and frustrating for an ideal grind. The encounters have complex mechanics without being as punishing as raids. This leads to an enjoyable 3-player endgame activity.

Between the mechanics, enemies, and jumping puzzles, dungeons test your skills in Destiny 2‘s core pillars. Yet they avoid the organizational challenges of assembling a 6-player raid team.

My Experience Running Hundreds of Dungeons

As someone with over 1500 hours in Destiny 2, I‘ve run every dungeon countless times. I always purchase the yearly dungeon pass because running dungeons is one of my favorite parts of the endgame.

The unique theming, worthwhile rewards, and repeatable challenge keeps me coming back every week. I‘ve helped many friends and clanmates earn their first dungeon completions as well.

Community Reaction on Pricing

When Bungie announced paid dungeon keys, some in the Destiny community were critical of locking this content behind an additional paywall. However, feedback has shifted over time.

Many players who initially complained have come to see the value after experiencing how high-quality and replayable dungeons are compared to seasonal content that‘s played once and forgotten.

I understand the frustration, but $20 for unlimited access to some of Destiny‘s best endgame activities is reasonable in my opinion as an experienced player.

Is the Dungeon Key Worth It?

For new and casual players, I recommend waiting to purchase dungeon keys individually only if a particular dungeon‘s gear interests you. Focus first on expansions and seasonal content.

But for engaged Destiny 2 players running endgame activities each week, the dungeon pass is absolutely worth the $20 cost based on the amount of gameplay time you‘ll get from it.

Unlocking all the dungeons also enables you to help others and teach new players during their first dungeon attempts. Being a dungeon guide is extremely rewarding.

Overall the value comes down to your personal playstyle, but with hundreds of hours across my characters, I can definitively say purchasing the dungeon pass has been well worth it.
