So How Much is a Charizard Really Worth?

On average, a Charizard Pokémon card is worth about $100. But for rare, vintage copies in perfect condition, we‘re talking $100,000+ or even over $1 million dollars at auction!

Let‘s explore why collectors go crazy over this fiery dragon and the astronomical prices people pay for the rarest Charizards.

Graded Gem Mint Charizards Fetch Massive Prices

Back in 2016, a PSA 10 1st Edition Charizard sold for $55,000 which seemed crazy at the time. Just a few years later, that price now seems like a steal.

In October 2020, a PSA 10 Charizard sold at auction for $350,000. Then in December 2020, musician Logic paid $226,000 for a PSA 10 Charizard. Even more recently in March 2021, a PSA 10 Charizard shattered records selling for $420,000 at auction.

For a PSA 9 mint copy, expect to pay $60,000-100,000. Even PSA 8 copies go for $20,000-30,000 these days.

It‘s not just the 1st Edition either. A PSA 10 Japanese Shining Charizard from Neo Destiny sold for $247,230 in January 2021, showing insane demand for Gem Mint copies of any vintage Charizard.

Population Reports Show Why PSA 10 Charizards Are So Rare

PSA has graded 19,287 copies of the 1999 1st Edition English Base Set Charizard. Out of those, only 121 have received the coveted Gem Mint 10 grade. That‘s a minuscule 0.63% of all Charizards submitted.

For the Japanese Shining Charizard, PSA has graded 6,733 copies. But again only 55 have received the top mark.

This scarcity of pristine, high grade copies from over 20 years ago is why prices skyrocket when they go up for auction. There‘s immense competition from collectors to own one of the very few that exist.

Recent Million Dollar Charizard Sale Breaks Records

In January 2021, a PSA 10 Base Set 1st Edition Charizard sold privately through PWCC Marketplace for $369,000. Just one month later in February 2021, the anonymous owner resold it through PWCC again, this time for a record-shattering $420,000.

The buyer was fellow investor and collector Nick Fiorella, who compared owning the PSA 10 Charizard to having the Mona Lisa of Pokémon cards, saying "It‘s the pinnacle of Pokemon collecting".

With just around 50 PSA 10s thought to exist, demand vastly outweighs supply, allowing sellers to continually push record prices.

Shining Charizards and Promos Also Fetch Big Money

While 1st Edition Base Set Charizards steal the headlines, other rare Charizards also command huge prices:

  • A PSA 10 Shining Charizard 1st Edition sold for $247,230 in January 2021
  • A 2009 Charizard G Lv.X sold for $45,100 in December 2020
  • A PSA 10 Japanese Promo Lucky Stadium Charizard went for $65,100 in December 2020

Factors That Make Charizards Valuable

Several key factors determine the collectibility and value of a Charizard card:

  • Edition & Print Run: 1st Edition and Shadowless cards are more valuable than Unlimited prints
  • Condition: PSA/BGS graded Gem Mint 10s fetch the highest premiums
  • Holo vs Non-Holo: The holographic version is rarer and more desirable
  • Language: English cards tend to be worth more than Japanese/other languages

Outlook for Prices Remains Strong

With Pokémon surging in popularity 25 years after the original games and cards, demand for rare Charizards continues to increase. Combine that nostalgia factor with scarce supply, and you have the perfect conditions for lofty valuations.

Many deep-pocketed collectors view Charizards as an alternative investment and prices reflect those institutional dollars flowing into the auction market.

As the collector base expands and new money chases these cards, expect Charizard prices to keep appreciating, especially for PSA 10s which will become ever more elusive over time.

Conclusion – This Fiery Dragon Remains Hot!

Charizard‘s iconic design and status as one of the most powerful and recognizable Pokémon make it a holy grail for collectors, especially cards from the 1999 1st Edition print run. Record sales above $400,000 for PSA 10s prove its reign as the most valuable Pokémon card is far from over.

For the average collector, raw lightly played copies offer accessibility. But make no mistake, the very best Charizards will remain largely out of reach, cherished by an exclusive club of investors and hobbyists. One thing‘s for sure – this fiery dragon‘s value is still burning red hot!
