How Much is Supercell Worth? A Deep Dive into the Massively Successful Mobile Gaming Company

Supercell is currently worth between $15-$20 billion based on its latest revenue and profits numbers. The Finnish mobile gaming developer has become one of the biggest success stories in the industry thanks to hugely popular titles like Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars.

In this deep dive article, we’ll analyze Supercell’s meteoric growth over the past decade and look at what has fueled its rise to a multi-billion dollar valuation.

From Startup to Dominant Player in Just a Few Years

Founded in 2010, Supercell had their first major hit with the 2013 release of farming simulation game Hay Day. But it was the launch of Clash of Clans later that year which truly propelled the young company onto the global stage.

With its fun warfare theme and addictive gameplay combining base building, resource management and competitive multiplayer, Clash of Clans quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It led the way for Supercell to amass millions of dedicated fans across the globe.

The company’s success caught the attention of Japanese telecom giant Softbank, who invested $1.5 billion in late 2013 to acquire a 51% stake in the company. This represented one of the largest funding rounds ever for a mobile gaming startup and valued Supercell at $3 billion already.

Just three years later in 2016, Chinese gaming and social media titan Tencent acquired Softbank’s position in an $8.6 billion deal which gave them 84.3% ownership of Supercell. This second deal valued the company at over $10 billion!

To reach a $10 billion valuation in only 6 years is remarkably fast growth, even for the dynamic mobile gaming industry. Clearly Supercell was doing something right with their games to justify such massive investments.

Supercell’s Secret Sauce: Simple Games Done Right

So what exactly has made Supercell such a dominant player in mobile gaming? There are a few key ingredients:

Global appeal – By focusing on straightforward concepts like combat and farming rather than complex lore, Supercell’s games appeal to casual gamers everywhere. They transcend cultures and demographics.

Satisfying progression – Leveling up and getting access to new content gives players a constant stream of rewards to keep them engaged for the long-term.

Social competition – Joining clans and leagues to play against others satisfies our human need for competition and community.

Constant updates – Supercell is committed to updating their games frequently not just with new content but optimizations to improve gameplay balance. This keeps the titles feeling fresh.

Premium financial model – By relying only on optional in-app purchases, Supercell avoids aggressive monetization and pay-to-win scenarios that frustrate players.

Of course great game design only starts with the developers. Supercell is also well-known for giving small teams a high degree of autonomy and iterating based on user feedback. The company empowers its people to create fun above all else.

This creative culture and live service approach is why the developer has been able to consistently release new hits. Very few gaming companies ever produce more than one or two breakout titles. Supercell now has an impressive four games with over 200 million lifetime downloads each.

Just How Much Revenue are Supercell‘s Games Generating?

Now let’s look at the core driver behind Supercell’s massive valuation – its revenue and profits. As a private company, Supercell does not disclose as much financial data publicly as rivals like EA or Activision. But we can still get a clear picture based on the numbers they have revealed over the years.

Supercell’s annual revenue was €1.33 billion (~$1.56 billion) in 2019. This declined slightly to €1.26 billion (~$1.48 billion) in 2020, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic‘s impact. But revenue rebounded swiftly in 2021, reaching €1.67 billion (~$2.24 billion) for the year.

Clash of Clans has been the top earner among Supercell’s titles so far, amassing over $7 billion in lifetime player spending. But their newer games are ramping up revenue quickly:

Game Lifetime Player Spending
Clash Royale $3 billion
Brawl Stars $1 billion
Hay Day $2 billion

In February 2023, Clash of Clans remained #1 with estimated lifetime spending now over $5 billion. Clash Royale followed at $3 billion, Hay Day at $1.88 billion, and Brawl Stars at $1.32 billion.

These in-app purchase revenues have translated into extremely healthy profit margins for the company. In 2019, Supercell‘s profits were €507 million (~$568 million). Profits dipped slightly to €544 million (~$624 million) in 2020 during the pandemic year but rebounded to a new record high of €618 million (~$852 million) in 2021.

To put these margins in perspective, EA reported $5.6 billion in revenue and $837 million in profit during the same period. So with less than half EA‘s total revenue, Supercell was able to generate similar levels of profit due solely to their lower overhead from smaller teams and lack of physical releases or manufacturing costs.

Supercell Pays Out Billions in Dividends Annually

Given the abundance of cash flow and Supercell’s status as a private company with only a few shareholders, Tencent and company founders, they are able to pay out large dividend payments each year.

In 2020, Supercell paid €1.7 billion (~$2.03 billion) in dividends to its shareholders off its 2019 results. In 2021, they paid out €2.1 billion (~$2.60 billion) based on 2020 financials.

As the majority shareholder, Tencent receives approximately 84% of these dividend payments. But Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen still receives handsome payouts each year thanks to his large minority stake.

In 2021, Paananen was reported to be Finland‘s top earner with income over €50 million (~$60 million). The long-time CEO benefited from both his share of dividends and compensation through Supercell.

What is Supercell Worth Today?

Valuing gaming companies accurately is challenging because revenue and profit figures can fluctuate so much year-to-year depending on new releases in the pipeline.

However, we can determine a reasonable estimate for Supercell based on their latest 2021 results and prior acquisition price. Industry analysts typically value gaming firms at 5-10x net profit when estimating market capitalization.

With $852 million in profit last year, a conservative 7x multiple would value Supercell at around $15 billion today.

Given Tencent paid over $10 billion for the company in 2016 when profits were lower and lack of new competing bids, the upper end of 10x profit points more to a $20 billion valuation currently.

Of course, Supercell does face challenges sustaining growth for the long-term. Launching new successful games gets harder as the market gets more saturated. And older titles like Clash eventually decline in revenue over time as players move on to the next big thing.

But the company has defied expectations and bounced back after past failures like Clash Royale esports leagues. Until proven otherwise, it seems unwise to bet against the Finnish gaming giant as they head into their second decade.

Tencent remains fully committed to their investment, and Supercell management still retains operating independence. With its tremendous development talent and uniquely collaborative culture, I expect Supercell has a bright future ahead even if they never fully recapture the lightning in a bottle success of early hits like Clash of Clans and Hay Day.

At the end of the day, Supercell’s worth comes down to fun. A rare combination of creativity, luck and relentless refinement has allowed the company to deliver some of the most engaging mobile gaming experiences ever seen. And that’s why today it finds itself valued at tens of billions of dollars.
