How much is TikTok worth?
A Brief History of TikTok and Its Meteoric Growth
TikTok has become one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world, amassing over 1 billion monthly active users in less than 5 years since its launch. Here‘s a quick look at TikTok‘s origins and rapid user expansion:
- Emerged in 2016 as ‘Douyin‘ app in China before launching internationally as TikTok in 2017
-
Hit 500 million global monthly active users by mid-2018
-
Merged with Musical.ly in 2018 adding millions more U.S. and European users
-
Exceeded 1 billion downloads in early 2019
-
Currently enjoys around 1.5 billion monthly active users globally
TikTok‘s monthly active users dwarf platforms like Snapchat (500 million) and Twitter (300 million) and are approaching Instagram‘s 2 billion. The sheer scale of TikTok‘s user base contributes significantly to its multibillion dollar valuation.
TikTok‘s Revenue Models – A Mix of Advertising, Tipping, and E-Commerce
TikTok has several ways of generating revenue from its loyal user base:
- Advertising – The bulk of revenue. Display ads, brand partnerships, in-feed native video ads.
-
LIVE streams – Users pay for virtual gifts and emojis to support creators.
-
TikTok Creator Marketplace – Brand sponsorship opportunities.
-
TikTok Creator Fund – Directly pays creators for top content.
-
In-app purchases – Users buy virtual coins to tip creators and use emojis.
Advertising makes up around 75% of TikTok revenue. Native video ads perform particularly well due to strong user engagement. TikTok‘s revenue per user lags behind Snapchat and Facebook but has been growing rapidly.
TikTok Revenue Metrics:
| Year | Annual Revenue |
|---|---|
| 2018 | $150 million |
| 2019 | $400 million |
| 2020 | $1.5 billion |
| 2021 | $4 billion (estimate) |
TikTok‘s Valuation History – Growth Trajectory and Key Events
As a private company, TikTok‘s valuation is not precisely known but has climbed sharply in recent years:
| Year | Valuation Estimate | Key Events |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $11 billion | ByteDance raises $1 billion |
| 2017 | $20 billion | Growing in China |
| 2018 | $75 billion | Musical.ly merger adds users |
| 2019 | $105-$135 billion | India growth, approaches 1 billion users |
| 2020 | $50-$100 billion | U.S. acquisition talks, regulatory scrutiny |
| 2022 | ~$100 billion | Revenue projections, competitive pressure |
TikTok‘s value has risen meteorically along with its user base, though political controversies have created volatility. The U.S. acquisition discussions in 2020 significantly impacted TikTok‘s valuation.
Factors That Influence TikTok‘s Worth
From a valuation perspective, these are the key factors impacting TikTok‘s worth:
- User growth rate – Critical metric given TikTok‘s ad-based model. Continued rapid expansion increases value.
-
Revenue per user – Lagging behind Facebook but rising rapidly. Room for further monetization gains.
-
Engagement metrics – Time on app, interactions, retention etc. Strength here boosts ad rates.
-
Competitive standing – Leading short-video format but threats emerging from Snap, Meta, YouTube.
-
Regulatory risks – Data privacy concerns in U.S., Europe, India. Global bans would destroy value.
-
AI and data assets – Sophisticated algorithms and data give competitive edge. Valuable IP.
-
Management execution – ByteDance‘s expertise, resources, vision for TikTok expansion.
TikTok has strengths across the board here but regulatory issues and competitive threats add uncertainty to projections.
Recent Developments Affecting TikTok‘s Worth
- Pandemic usage surge – Usage rocketed with people stuck at home. Solidified its position.
-
Political backlash – Pressured ByteDance to divest portions of TikTok to U.S. firms, valuing it at ~$50 billion.
-
Increasing competition – Facebook, Snapchat, and YouTube launching TikTok-like offerings. More choice may fragment users.
-
New e-commerce tools – Testing in-app shopping features to tap into social commerce revenues. Huge potential if adopted.
-
Partial spin-off being explored – ByteDance may spin-off some TikTok operations to ease data security concerns. Impact unclear.
TikTok‘s Valuation Versus Acquisition Values of Other Social Platforms
Looking at past acquisition deals for major social media companies provides useful context on TikTok‘s potential worth:
- Facebook paid $1 billion for Instagram in 2012 when it had 30 million users. TikTok now has 50 times more monthly active users.
-
Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $26 billion in 2016 when it had 450 million users. TikTok‘s user base is 3 times larger today.
-
Snap bought Zenly app for $3.4 billion in 2017. TikTok dwarfs Zenly in size and scope.
-
Meta paid $22 billion for WhatsApp in 2014 when it had 450 million users. Again TikTok is far bigger.
Based on these comparisons, TikTok would be worth at least $50 billion and potentially far more based on future projections.
Expert Analysis on What TikTok May be Worth
According to analysts, investors and other observers:
- "TikTok at this stage is valued around $100 billion given its revenue growth," says Mark Shmulik, tech analyst at Bernstein.
-
"A valuation of $150 billion or more is clearly possible if growth continues," notes Eric Schiffer, private equity investor.
-
"In a few years, its value could exceed $300 billion if it dominates short video and expands revenue sources," predicts tech VC Monik Sharma.
-
"TikTok needs to expand beyond advertising to fulfill its potential, but it could be worth over $200 billion," says Harry Kraus, Wharton Business School professor.
-
"Considering risks like regulation and competition, $100 billion seems a reasonable estimate for now," argues Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak.
The Complexities in Valuing TikTok
As an unprecedented social media phenonmenon, valuing TikTok poses challenges:
- Explosive growth makes future trajectory unpredictable. Concerns it may be a fad persist.
- Revenue breakdowns and user monetization ability lacks transparency.
- Impacts of content regulation worldwide are unknown and concerning.
- Rising competition from major players with deep resources adds uncertainty.
"Putting an accurate number on what TikTok is worth is remarkably difficult," says Dennis Dick, Equity Analyst. "Traditional valuation models don‘t neatly apply."
My Analysis: $100 Billion is a Prudent Estimate for TikTok Currently
Given TikTok‘s massive user base, strong engagement metrics, and fast growing revenues, I believe a fair valuation for TikTok based on current financials and market conditions would be in the range of $100 billion.
This seems reasonable based on 2023 revenue projections of around $15 billion and a price-to-sales ratio of 6-7x which is warranted based on TikTok‘s hypergrowth and margin potential.
However, if TikTok can maintain rapid expansion post-pandemic, successfully diversify revenue sources beyond advertising, and avoid any major governmental bans, its value in the next 2-3 years could reach $200 billion or higher. Much depends on execution and regulatory treatment.
But the platform clearly has extraordinary reach and influence. As TikTok solidifies its position as the premiere short video social platform globally, few would bet against it joining the highest echelon of social media valuations currently occupied only by Meta and ByteDance stablemate YouTube.
