How to Create Eye-Catching Text on a Path Designs in Procreate

Method 1: Warp Your Way to Custom Paths

Here‘s how to use the Warp Tool on your text:

Step 1: Open your canvas and tap the wrench icon to open the Actions menu. Under "Add", select "Add Text" and type out your phrase.

Step 2: In the Layers panel, tap on your text layer. Select "Rasterize" from the flyout menu that appears. This converts your text to a pixels so you can warp it.

Step 3: With your text layer selected, tap the cursor icon at the top to open the Transform menu. Choose "Warp" and make sure "Advanced Mesh" is selected.

Step 4: You‘ll now see a grid of blue nodes overlaid on your text. Simply drag the nodes to reshape the path of your letters. The more nodes you have, the more precise your adjustments will be. Don‘t be afraid to really play around and experiment!

Some tips for using the Warp Tool:

• Before you start warping, go into the Transform settings and turn on "Snapping". This will help keep your text more evenly spaced as you adjust it.
• If you want to warp just a portion of your text, use the Selection tool first to only select that area. Then go into the Warp tool.
• To add more nodes for even finer control, just pinch out to zoom in on your text, and extra nodes will appear. The reverse also works – pinch to zoom out and nodes will disappear.
• Don‘t limit yourself to just simple arcs and waves. Experiment with zig-zags, spirals, rippled effects and undulating lines. The Warp tool can handle them all.

Once you‘ve mastered the Warp tool, it‘ll be your best friend any time you want to create an organically-shaped text path. On to method #2!

Method 2: Drawing Guides for Straight and Geometric Paths

Sometimes you want your text paths to be laser-precise rather than flowy and organic. That‘s where Drawing Guides come in. Procreate‘s Drawing Guides are pre-made grids and lines that you can type directly on top of. They‘re perfect for creating text paths with straight lines, angles, and geometric shapes.

There are a few different Drawing Guide options that work well for text paths:

• 2D Grid: Gives you straight vertical and horizontal lines to follow
• Isometric: Provides angled lines in a 3D-style grid
• Perspective: Creates lines that converge to a vanishing point, great for 3D lettering effects
• Symmetry: Reflects your text in various mirrored patterns

To use a Drawing Guide for your text, follow these steps:

Step 1: In your canvas, tap the wrench icon to open Actions. Under Canvas, toggle Drawing Guide on, then tap "Edit Drawing Guide".

Step 2: In the Drawing Guide editor, choose the guide you want to use (I‘m going with 2D Grid for this example). Configure the grid size and opacity to your liking, then tap "Done" to return to your canvas.

Step 3: Open the "Add Text" menu and type your phrase, then close the text editor. Your text will appear on top of the grid, and you can use the Transform tool to resize and move it into place along the gridlines.

The key to perfecting this method is choosing the right Drawing Guide for the look you‘re going for. Play around with a few different ones to see what effects you can create. A few more tips:

• The Isometric guide is my favorite for funky, retro-style angled text designs.
• For circular or curved text paths, try the Symmetry guide set to "Radial".
• When using the Perspective guide, adjust the "Perspective Warp" slider in the Transform settings to make your text look more dramatically 3D.

Drawing Guides work best with text when you want to create very precise, geometric paths and designs. But what if you want something a little more organic and hand-crafted? On to method 3!

Method 3: Freehand Lettering with Drawing Guides

For those times when you want a completely custom, handwritten look, freehand lettering is the way to go. And Procreate‘s Drawing Guides can still help keep your paths precise, even when you‘re writing the letters yourself.

This method works great for any kind of hand-lettered look, from modern calligraphy and brush Script to illustrations and graphic design elements. The idea is to use a Drawing Guide grid or line as a reference while you write freehand with an Apple Pencil or other stylus.

Here‘s how to do it:

Step 1: Set up your canvas with your desired Drawing Guide, following the same steps as in Method 2 above. I recommend a simple 2D Grid or an Isometric guide to start.

Step 2: Create a new layer for your freehand lettering. This way you can erase and redo it without messing up your guide.

Step 3: Choose a brush from the Calligraphy or Lettering brush sets. Monoline and script brushes tend to work best for this technique.

Step 4: Now simply start writing on top of the guide, using the lines as a reference to keep your letters straight, evenly spaced, and on the right path. Take your time and don‘t worry if it‘s not perfect – that‘s part of the charm of hand lettering!

The beauty of this method is that it produces lettering that looks natural and hand-crafted, but still has the polish of a purposeful design. A couple tips to keep in mind:

• If you want to curve or arc your freehand letters, try using the 2D Grid guide, resizing it so it forms more of a square. Then rotate the text layer until the guides flow in the direction you want.
• Experiment with different brushes and don‘t be afraid to mix and match! You can get some really dynamic-looking designs by combining a thick brush for the base lettering with a thinner one for flourishes and accents.
• Once you‘ve finished your lettering, you can hide the Drawing Guide layer to remove the grid. Or, try lowering the guide‘s opacity to make it look more integrated into the design.

Bonus: Warped Freehand Lettering

Want to really take your text paths to the next level? Try combining methods 1 and 3 for an advanced warped freehand effect.

First, set up a Drawing Guide and do your freehand lettering as described in Method 3. Then, once you‘ve created your lettering, hide the guide and use the Warp tool to massage your freehand letters into even more unique and dynamic shapes.

This requires a bit of finesse, but the payoff is worth it. You can create completely one-of-a-kind text path designs that look hand-crafted but also have a level of polish that freehand alone can‘t achieve.

• For flowy, curvy, and organic paths, go with the freeform Warp tool.
• For precise geometric shapes, angles, and grids, use a Drawing Guide.

• And don‘t be afraid to mix and match for even more possibilities!

The truth is, you can never go wrong by experimenting with all of the available text path options in Procreate. The more you play around, the more you‘ll get a feel for which method works best in different design scenarios.
