  • The export/recover process and limitations
  • PhoneRescue‘s pricing, ease of use, and support
  • How it compares to alternative iPhone recovery methods

By the end, you‘ll know if PhoneRescue is the right tool for getting your lost iOS data back. Let‘s dive in!

What is iMobie PhoneRescue?

iMobie PhoneRescue is data recovery software specifically designed for iOS devices like iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. It offers four distinct recovery modes to handle different data loss scenarios:

  1. Recover from iOS Device – Scans your device‘s internal memory to recover deleted files
  2. Recover from iTunes Backup – Extracts and recovers data from iTunes backup files
  3. Recover from iCloud – Retrieves data from your iCloud backups
  4. iOS Repair Tools – Fixes issues preventing your device from operating normally

PhoneRescue is developed by iMobie, an Apple-certified software company. It‘s compatible with the latest iPhone models and iOS versions. The software is available for both Windows and Mac.

My Experience Using PhoneRescue

To thoroughly test PhoneRescue, I used my own iPhone X running iOS 14.6. I tried each of the four recovery modes in various scenarios – after deleting data, with an unresponsive device, and with both iTunes and iCloud backups.

Here‘s how each mode performed:

Recover from iOS Device

This mode scans your iPhone‘s internal memory to find deleted files. After connecting my iPhone, PhoneRescue did a deep scan of the device‘s storage. The process took under 10 minutes.

I was impressed with the number of files it found – over 10,000 in total across many categories like photos, messages, contacts, notes, and more. PhoneRescue located data I had deleted months ago.

However, the vast number of found files made it a bit tedious to sort through and locate specific items I wanted to recover. Many of the found files were actually still present on my device.

So while this mode is very effective at finding deleted data, be prepared to spend some time picking out the files you need from a massive search results list. This mode is best if you‘re trying to recover recently deleted data and don‘t have a backup available.

Recover from iTunes Backup

Have an iTunes backup of your device? This recovery mode can extract data from it – perfect if your iPhone is lost, stolen, or too damaged to scan directly.

PhoneRescue automatically found my iPhone‘s latest iTunes backup. In just a few minutes, it extracted a huge number of files from the backup – over 15,000 items across all supported categories. The amount of data matched what I‘d expect to find in a full device backup.

Compared to restoring via iTunes directly, PhoneRescue offers two key advantages:

  1. You can see exactly what‘s in the backup before recovering anything
  2. You can selectively restore just the files you need, rather than overwriting your device completely

If you have an iTunes backup, this is an excellent way to get back lost data without losing any new/changed files on your device since that backup was made.

Recover from iCloud

Similar to the iTunes backup method, this mode pulls data from your iCloud backups. You‘ll need to log into your iCloud account to use it.

After signing in, PhoneRescue displayed all available iCloud backups for my account. I selected the most recent. The software downloaded data from the backup and extracted the files so I could browse through them.

Honestly, I was a bit underwhelmed by this mode. It didn‘t seem to give me any additional capabilities compared to just using iCloud.com to restore a backup or download files. The only minor convenience is having all recoverable file types visible in one program window.

In my opinion, most users are better off handling iCloud backups and restores directly through Apple‘s website and tools. This PhoneRescue mode doesn‘t add much value.

iOS Repair Tools

The final mode aims to fix iOS issues that may be preventing you from accessing your data normally. It can address problems like:

  • iPhone stuck on Apple logo or blank screen
  • Endless reboot loops
  • Devices frozen or unresponsive to touch
  • Errors connecting to iTunes

Fortunately, my iPhone was working normally, so I didn‘t have a chance to fully evaluate this mode. I did appreciate the detailed explanations PhoneRescue provides about which issues the repair tools can and can‘t fix.

The iOS Repair Tools mode is a nice "bonus" feature to have available. But for most users, the main value of PhoneRescue will be in the data recovery capabilities of the other three modes.

Exporting and Recovering Found Data

Once PhoneRescue has found your lost files, you‘ll likely want to get them back onto your iPhone or at least export them to your computer. The software makes this process pretty intuitive.

[Screenshot of PhoneRescue export options]

You can either:

  1. Directly restore files to your iOS device (available for contacts, messages, call logs, notes, and a few other categories)
  2. Export files to your computer (available for all supported file types)

I tested both methods. Restoring data to my iPhone worked well – the selected files showed up in the proper apps quickly. Just note that you‘ll need to turn off "Find My iPhone" temporarily to write data back to your iOS device.

Exporting data to my Mac was also a smooth process. PhoneRescue organizes the recovered files neatly into folders. It preserves the original file names and metadata. The exported copies matched the quality of the originals.

One minor complaint: PhoneRescue doesn‘t support directly restoring photos and videos to an iOS device; you can only export those to your computer. It‘s an extra step to then sync those files back to your iPhone via iTunes or iCloud.

But overall, PhoneRescue makes it easy to get your found data back in your possession, either on your device or backed up to your computer.

Ease of Use

Throughout my tests, I was consistently impressed with PhoneRescue‘s user-friendliness. The software has an intuitive, modern interface that guides you through the recovery process step-by-step.

[Screenshot of PhoneRescue main menu]

At each stage, the program provides helpful explanations in plain English of what it‘s doing and what your options are. Buttons and menu options are clearly labeled. Useful warnings help prevent accidentally overwriting or mishandling your data.

Even if you‘re not particularly tech-savvy, you should have no trouble using PhoneRescue to recover your files. The software takes care of all the complex parts of the process behind the scenes. It‘s an excellent balance of power and accessibility.

Performance and Reliability

Data recovery is a tricky business. There are a lot of variables that determine if lost files can be successfully found and restored. In my experience, PhoneRescue handles this finicky task about as well as any software can.

The program was able to find data I had deleted from my iPhone months ago. Files extracted from backups perfectly matched the originals. Everything from photos to messages to voice memos came through with pristine quality.

Of course, PhoneRescue can‘t work miracles. If a file has been overwritten on your device or corrupted in a backup, it‘s probably gone for good. And the older a backup is, the less likely it will have the specific version of a file you‘re looking for.

But in scenarios where your lost data is still retrievable, PhoneRescue maximizes your chances of getting it back intact. The software also didn‘t cause any freezes, crashes, or errors during my tests, unlike some questionable "free" recovery tools out there.

While no recovery software is perfect, PhoneRescue delivers about as strong of results as you could hope for. It‘s an impressively robust and reliable utility.

Supported File Types

PhoneRescue can recover an extensive range of file types from iOS devices and backups. Supported categories include:

  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Contacts
  • Messages (including attachments)
  • Call History
  • Calendar
  • Reminders
  • Safari History and Bookmarks
  • Notes
  • Voice Memos
  • Apps (the app itself and its documents/data)

It‘s a comprehensive list that covers the vast majority of data people tend to store on their iPhones and iPads. Whether you need to recover photos from a Hawaiian vacation or a year‘s worth of WhatsApp messages, PhoneRescue has you covered.

Pricing

PhoneRescue is a premium utility, and its pricing reflects that. Licenses are available in two tiers:

  • 1 Year License: $49.99
  • Lifetime License: $69.99

There‘s also a free trial version that allows you to scan for and preview lost files, but you‘ll need to purchase a license to actually recover the data.

The lifetime license seems to be the best value. For just $20 more than the yearly plan, you get a permanent license with access to all future software updates and new features. Considering data loss is (hopefully) a rare issue, the one-time fee should be adequate for most users‘ needs.

It would be nice to see a slightly lower price point. But given PhoneRescue‘s robust performance and reliability, it may be a worthwhile investment for many iOS users, especially those without current backups.

Customer Support

iMobie offers several support channels for PhoneRescue customers:

  • 24/7 email support
  • Live chat on the iMobie website
  • An extensive FAQ/knowledge base
  • How-to guides and tutorial videos

I contacted iMobie support twice during my tests – once via email and once via live chat. In both cases, I received prompt, courteous, and informative replies from the support reps. They addressed my questions thoroughly and offered helpful tips.

The knowledge base on the iMobie site is also impressive. It has clear, step-by-step guides for using PhoneRescue in countless scenarios. There are also troubleshooting tips, explanations of iOS data concepts, and advice for preventing future data loss.

While I hope most users will never need to contact support, it‘s reassuring to know that the iMobie team provides quality assistance if issues arise. They seem genuinely committed to helping customers get the most out of the software.

Alternatives to PhoneRescue

PhoneRescue is a strong contender in the iOS data recovery category, but it‘s not the only option. Other notable tools include:

  • Dr. Fone – Similar feature set and pricing to PhoneRescue
  • EaseUS MobiSaver – Offers a free (but limited) version; $59.95 for full version
  • Stellar Data Recovery for iPhone – $49.99; focuses only on data recovery, lacking the bonus features of PhoneRescue
  • Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery – Free version available; lifetime license is $45.95

If you‘re on a tight budget, one of the free tools could be worth trying. They tend to have more limited functionality, but may be adequate if you only need to recover a few critical files.

For most users though, PhoneRescue compares favorably to the alternatives in terms of performance, usability, and overall value. Its robust scanning and multiple recovery modes give you the best chance of success. And the lifetime license is competitively priced.

The Verdict

After putting PhoneRescue through its paces, I can confidently recommend it to any iPhone or iPad user dealing with data loss. The software makes a highly technical task feel approachable. It offers an impressive level of performance while still being easy to use.

While not perfect, PhoneRescue‘s recovery capabilities are as good as or better than any competing iOS utility I‘ve tested. Whether you need to restore a deleted photo or extract a large backup, it gets the job done reliably. The bonus iOS repair tools are a nice value-add as well.

No software can guarantee lost data will be recoverable. But in most common iOS data loss scenarios, PhoneRescue is a powerful ally. It delivers a lot of utility for a reasonable one-time price.

Ideally, we‘d all keep perfect, up-to-date backups and never need data recovery software. In the real world though, accidents and tech failures happen. PhoneRescue is an excellent safety net to have available when those inevitable data mishaps occur.

Tips to Avoid iPhone Data Loss

While PhoneRescue works well, having to use any data recovery tool is always a stress-inducing experience. To reduce your chances of losing important iPhone data, keep these best practices in mind:

  1. Keep iCloud backups enabled on your device. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and make sure it‘s turned on.

  2. If you prefer local backups, connect your iPhone to your computer and run an iTunes sync at least once a week.

  3. For your most precious files (like one-of-a-kind photos), export copies to your computer or upload them to a cloud storage service for extra redundancy.

  4. Before upgrading to a new version of iOS or getting a new iPhone, always backup your current device first – just in case something goes wrong in the transition.

  5. Be mindful when deleting files to avoid accidentally removing something important. Emptying the "Recently Deleted" trash bin in Photos removes images permanently.

  6. If an app offers its own cloud sync service (like Google Photos), consider enabling that as an extra backup layer.

The old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is especially relevant when it comes to preserving digital data. While PhoneRescue is there if you need it, adopting a personal backup strategy is always the best defense.

I hope this detailed review has given you a thorough understanding of what PhoneRescue can (and can‘t) do. While I wish you never have the misfortune of needing a data recovery tool, it‘s a minor miracle that software like PhoneRescue exists to help salvage lost iPhone files. It earns a high recommendation.
