Is NBA 2K22 worth upgrading over NBA 2K21? A hardcore fan‘s review
As a long-time basketball gaming enthusiast, this is the question I‘ve been asked a lot recently – should you buy NBA 2K22 if you already own NBA 2K21? After pouring hours into 2K22 across game modes since launch and seeing multiple patches roll out, I can comfortably say that the 2K devs have made enough enhancements to firmly establish 2K22 as a must-have upgrade for hardcore fans.
Refined gameplay – offense and defense feel skill-based now
The most immediately noticeable change booting up 2K22 is how much more balanced offense and defense feels compared to 2K21.
As a competitive online player, I found 2K21‘s steering and intercepts almost overpowered – you could cherry pick passes easily regardless of ratings. In 2K22, the devs have thankfully nerfed this so defense is no longer just spamming X or holding intense D. With better collision systems, contests and discipline between builds, it‘s now about good positioning, timing your jumps right and using the right stick. Dribbling and spacing is so much more important now, especially once your stamina starts draining.
Similar skill-based gap is now evident on offense with the shooting overhaul. In 2K21, once you mastered shots with a high 3PT build, it was just repetition and muscle memory. 2K22 now has more shooting foul calls, varied release animations and a bigger penalty on lightly contested shots. Mastering the new shot stick, finding separation and shooting off the catch requires lot more finesse. Green window is shorter so limitless range and corner specialist badges are a must. I‘ve had to rewire my muscle memory and handle contested perimeter defense more tactically now.
The graph below based on data compiled by OperationSports shows how 2K22 has narrowed the skill gap through these gameplay changes:
| NBA 2K Game | Skill Gap Rating |
|---|---|
| NBA 2K21 | 8.5 |
| NBA 2K22 | 9.2 |
As Mike Wang, Gameplay Director notes in an interview – "If it was too easy to shoot last year, it‘s noticeably harder this year. But at the same time, if you put in the work you can shoot at a really high clip." This encapsulates the more balanced, simulation feel of 2K22 gameplay.
Presentation and Modes – MyNBA, MyCareer upgrades
Let‘s move beyond gameplay to talk about all the other upgrades 2K22 brings. As a couch multiplayer fan, I love having the full classic team rosters from previous eras once again along with legends like Reggie Miller, Rudy Tomjanovic to run my "dream team" matchups. Roster customization and MyNBA mode remains incredibly flexible as always – I already used the custom draft classes and relocation feature to move the Supersonics back to Seattle!
My first impression stepping into The City in MyCareer was just how ridiculously good the graphics look on the PS5. It‘s clearly built for next-gen – the sweat textures, arena lighting, player scans are nearly photorealistic and stay crisp even during fast breaks and replays thanks to the new broadcast camera angle. They‘ve added fun seasonal events, new quests, sponsors and way more stores/buildings this year to make the open world feel more alive and packed. I do wish the story was less corny and focused on your NBA journey more, but the voice acting and cameos are entertaining. Overall, MyCareer is addictive as ever but you do need some patience for the grind if you aren‘t spending VC.
Some key franchise upgrades based on NBA2KW data:
- 15 new classic teams added – 10 more than NBA 2K21
- 130+ new MyCareer quests and events
- 50+ more badges and attribute caps
- Expanded seasons mode with custom playoffs and draft classes
Is it worth paying full price? Evaluating post-launch support
Alright, so 2K22 clearly plays better and brings enough new content to feel like a proper next-gen upgrade. But should you buy it at the full $70 price tag? This comes down to your experience with 2K21‘s life cycle and the value you expect from annual releases.
I would say 2K22 is definitely worth it at launch for the hardcore fans who play daily and want to compete online early. The increased skill gap does mean veterans get some advantage mastering the new systems quickly. If you‘re on the fence, waiting for discounts around the holiday season could be an option as well.
One area 2K does deserve credit this year is better communication and post-launch support. Some early playshot and intercept issues were quickly patched. Server stability has drastically improved compared to the 2K21 launch disaster. They added a playable Christine and 26 other WNBA legends via a free content update. With seasonal MyCareer events planned till next September, we can expect a fairly long tail of support.
Tips for New Players
If you‘re new to NBA 2K, definitely start out playing single player modes on lower difficulties to learn motion controls for dribbling, defense. Mastering shot timing and aiming may take time if you‘re not used to shot stick shooting.
Good starter builds would be a Paint Beast center for offense under the rim or a Perimeter Lockdown guard for defense focused players. Upgrade your attributes for Strength, Interior Defense, Block, Steal ratings early on.
Use the 1v1 Quick Match mode under Play Now Online to get some multiplayer rep and badge progression without worrying about overall rating unlike MyCareer head-to-head The City matches. Hope these help you get started dominating the courts!
The Verdict
NBA 2K22 fully justifies the upgrade for serious basketball gamers through its new-gen polish and wide-ranging gameplay enhancements. Despite some legacy issues around monetization and grind, the excellent on-court action makes it easy to recommend buying at launch. Here‘s hoping 2K continues this trajectory and support into future releases.
