Is Battlefield 2042 Worth Playing in 2026?
Hey friend! If you‘ve been wondering whether Battlefield 2042 is worth giving a shot in 2024, I‘ve got the inside scoop for you.
As someone who‘s been playing BF games for over a decade, I was really hyped for 2042. But after it launched, even I was disappointed with the state it was in. Between the glitches, lack of content, and missing features, it just didn‘t feel like a real Battlefield game.
But it‘s over a year later now. There have been a bunch of updates and fixes to improve things, so is BF2042 worth returning to now? Let‘s dig in!
What Went Wrong at Launch
To understand how far 2042 has come, we need to talk about its disastrous launch back in November 2021. Here‘s a quick recap of the major issues:
- Broken glitches everywhere – Floating tanks, warped player models, invisibility exploits. It was a mess.
- Performance problems – I have an RTX 3080 and it still ran poorly!
- Only 4 maps and 2 modes – Previous games had 10-15 maps and 5+ modes by comparison.
- No classic class system – They changed to generic Specialists and it ruined teamwork.
- Overpowered vehicles – Flying hovercrafts up skyscrapers was not intended gameplay!
This led to over 33,000 negative Steam reviews at launch and it became the lowest user-rated BF game ever on console as well.
Across all platforms, the player count dropped over 90% in the first 2 months – from over 100,000 concurrent players to under 10,000.
Clearly they had a lot of work to do to turn things around. But have they managed to do it? Let‘s look at how things have evolved since then.
The Road to Redemption
DICE outlined a 1 year roadmap to improve the game through 4 Seasons of content and patches.
-
Season 1 focused on introducing the Exposure map and balancing ground vehicles. This was just a small step in the right direction though.
-
Season 2 brought the biggest update yet – 2 new maps, over a dozen new weapons, and improvements to音效 and UI. This is when the game became reasonably playable.
-
Season 3 in my opinion was the make-or-break update. We finally got a rework to the Specialist system, bringing back classes. The giant Discarded map with more interesting terrain was also a highlight.
-
Season 4 just launched with classic BF3 maps and new Specialists. And there‘s still more content and features planned for 2024!
While the team still has a ways to go to catch up to past Battlefields, these updates patched the glaring issues and brought some much needed content to keep things fresh.
Current State of Core Gameplay
Look, I‘ll be honest with you – BF2042 had lost the magic that made past games so special at launch. The maps were flat, the guns felt weak, and teamwork was non-existent.
But today? Much better.
They‘ve added a ton more cover and reworked the landscapes of even the base maps. You can actually push objectives and not get sniped from 18 different rooftops now.
Gunplay has gotten tighter with improvements to aiming, recoil, and sound design. Unloading an LMG on Exposure gives me those classic Battlefield moments again.
Combined arms is better balanced too. Little birds and tanks have been nerfed so they no longer dominate everyone.
Bringing back the class system has also encouraged way more squad teamwork. I‘m seeing medics reviving and supports resupplying again!
There‘s still issues of course – weapon variety could be deeper, and map destruction is light. But DICE has absolutely improved the core moment-to-moment gameplay over the past year.
What About the Playerbase? Can I Find Full Matches?
I won‘t sugarcoat it – BF2042 never recovered the insane sales and population it had at launch. After peaking at over 100,000 concurrent players, it dropped to around 10,000 after a few months.
Here are the latest player counts across platforms:
- PC – Around 5,000 daily players
- PlayStation – Between 2,000 – 3,000
- Xbox – Average of 1,500 players online
So while PC has the healthiest base, console isn‘t dead either. Using crossplay helps populate matches too.
Importantly, you can actually find full 128 player lobbies during peak evenings in North America and Europe. Server browser shows pages of options most nights.
The game certainly isn‘t setting records, but there‘s enough of a core community to squad up with.
What‘s the Verdict? Is Battlefield 2042 Worth Playing Now?
Phew, we covered a lot of ground there! Let‘s bring it home…
Is Battlefield 2042 worth playing in 2024 after its disastrous launch state? I‘d say yes, with a few caveats.
If you enjoy large scale, chaotic Battlefield combat it‘s absolutely worth trying again. The map flow, gun feel, and vehicle balance is WAY better. Portal mode also lets you play classic BF3/BC2 content which is awesome.
Just temper expectations around amount of maps and weapons compared to older games. BF4 still has way more guns and double the multiplayer maps. I wish we had more variety.
Also realize teamplay isn‘t as tactical as older titles. The squad mechanics aren‘t as sharp as BF3/BF4 era, so expect a faster pace.
If you despised BF2042 before, you‘ll probably still hate it because the core DNA is similar. But for lapsed fans willing to give it another shot, I think you‘ll be pleasantly surprised by the improvements.
I‘d suggest trying it out if you can get it on sale for $20-30 to form your own opinion. Or play via EA Play or Xbox Game Pass to test it at no extra cost.
It may never reclaim the BF throne, but Battlefield 2042 has evolved into a solid option for large-scale chaotic warfare in 2024. The redemption arc continues! Give it a chance and I think you‘ll have some fun.
Let me know what you think once you dive in, and I‘ll see you on the Battlefield!
