Is Cayo Perico a real place? A deep dive into GTA’s new exotic heist location

As an avid GTA fan, I was eagerly awaiting the new Cayo Perico heist. Rumors of a new tropical island location owned by a drug lord sounded awesome! When it finally launched in December 2020 as part of the Cayo Perico update, I was immediately captivated by the beautiful new map. Swimming in the crystal blue waters and scouting the island’s secrets made me feel like I was on an actual vacation! But is Cayo Perico actually based on a real place? Let’s find out!

The fictional origins of Cayo Perico

While Cayo Perico feels vibrant and realistic, it is completely fictional and does not exist in the real world. The island was designed from scratch by Rockstar Games specifically for GTA Online. According to the developers, Cayo Perico is located in the Caribbean Sea near Colombia. This puts it geographically close to Vice City, another fictional Rockstar location inspired by Miami.

Despite being fictional, the island itself seems heavily inspired by real Caribbean locations. The overall shape of Cayo Perico resembles Canouan island belonging to the Grenadines. Various fans and streamers have also noted similarities to Puerto Rico and Cuba. The geography mirrors these real islands with beaches, swamps, hills, cliffs and inland lakes.

So while totally original, Cayo Perico is Rockstar’s artistic take on what a rich drug lord’s private island might look like!

The Colombia connections – Real life inspires Cayo Perico’s drug lord lore

While the island itself is fictional, its notorious owner Juan Strickler aka El Rubio is rooted in some real Columbian history. His backstory shares striking parallels to Pablo Escobar and Carlos Lehder – two of the most infamous drug kingpins ever.

Escobar and Lehder headed the Medellin cartel in Colombia during the ‘70s and ‘80s. At the height of their power, both purchased private islands to run their smuggling operations. Escobar’s La Isla Grande was just off the Colombian coast, while Lehder bought Norman’s Cay island in the Bahamas. On these secluded islands far from authorities, they smuggled tons of cocaine into Miami and hosted lavish parties.

Similarly, El Rubio uses his remote island to manufacture drugs unbothered and enjoy a luxurious narcotics-fueled lifestyle. His name, looks and backstory all seem inspired by the Colombian gangster lore. While certainly exaggerated, El Rubio represents a fictional mashup of these real-world kingpins.

Paradise found – What players can discover across Cayo Perico’s diverse biomes

Cayo Perico may be smaller in size than Los Santos, but the island is packed with diverse locales to explore. As a gamer, I loved trekking across the different biomes and scouting the perfect infiltration routes. Here are some of my favorite spots across the island:

The Beaches – Right from the shores, you can gaze upon El Rubio’s towering compound. The beaches provide the perfect gateway to nightclubs and sea-facing villas. But watch out for patrol boats!

The Jungle – Lush jungles cover most of the island. It’s teeming with wildlife, exotic birds, waterfalls and old ruins. Dense foliage here lets you stealthily approach El Rubio’s compound.

The Cliffs – Jagged cliffs tower above the western beaches. Scaling these is tricky but provides a daring infiltration option for El Rubio’s main docks. Just watch your step!

The Airstrip – El Rubio’s personal airstrip takes up a sizable chunk of the island. His planes here allow moving drugs fast. Lots of barracks and hangars to sneak into as well!

The Volcano – A huge volcano dominates the horizon. Minor eruptions occasionally blast out smoke but cause no damage. There’s rumors of old treasure hidden in its caves!

In addition to scenic nature, the island also houses El Rubio’s mansion compound, communications tower, drug labs and other criminal operations. Each area presents fun tactical opportunities for the big heist.

Masterminding the perfect heist on Cayo Perico

As an avid gamer, I lived and breathed the Cayo Perico heist when it first launched. Here’s an overview of the gameplay:

You are tasked with infiltrating El Rubio’s island to steal various high-value target items heist is totally customizable, with lots of approaches to pick from. My friends and I have already run this heist dozens of times, trying new strategies every time.

Here are some of the key things you can customize:

Entry Point – Will you go via the beach, airstrip, docks or main gate? Each entry point changes strategy and prep required.

Approach – Guns blazing? Or stealthy as a panther? Both aggressive and stealth runs are viable.

Time of Day – Nighttime stealth is thrilling but risky. Daylight provides cover from the sun.

Equipment – Armed to the teeth or sneaky? Buy weapon loadouts, silent gear or disguises.

Getaway – Escape by air, land or sea! Just get off the island safely once you have the loot.

Based on various factors, the heist can net between $900k to $1.4 million normally, and $1m to $1.9m on hard mode. For new players still learning the ropes, I recommend running the velum approach and exiting via the main docks at night.

Here are some tips to get you started smoothly on your first Cayo Perico run:

• Use suppressed weapons and take out guards silently

• Memorize enemy patrol routes and camera placements

• Trip the compound power before entering the vault

• Prioritize cocaine over weed for max profits

• Equip rebreathers to swim off the south dock unseen

Why Cayo Perico has me excited as a gamer

As a long-time GTA fan, I think Rockstar nailed it with the Cayo Perico expansion. Here are some of the key highlights for me:

A sprawling new map – Exploring Cayo Perico with its diverse landscapes, hidden secrets and scenic views felt like a vacation! The map design captures the exotic tropical vibe beautifully.

Fun and replayable heist mechanics – The heist adds a ton of gameplay depth allowing different approaches. It never gets old trying new strategies with friends.

Great solo and co-op experience – Cayo Perico plays great alone or with a crew. Friendly to all playstyles!

Killer soundtrack – The atmospheric Latin soundtrack perfectly complements the island vibe. I often just chill listening to the radio.

An immersive criminal fantasy – Who doesn’t want to live like a kingpin on a tropical island? El Rubio’s lifestyle and backstory create an engaging criminal power fantasy.

Major economy updates – The heist payout finally provides high-level players something lucrative to work towards. It added much-needed money sinks as well.

For me, Cayo Perico is one of the best GTA Online updates ever. I can’t wait to run this heist another hundred times, optimizing my strategy and enjoying the lush island paradise. It added a compelling new progression system with tons of replay value. Rockstar really outdid themselves here!
