Is Corax Still Alive?

Corvus Corax, also known as the "Ravenlord," was the Primarch of the Raven Guard and one of the Emperor‘s twenty sons created to lead the Space Marine Legions during the Great Crusade. Corax was known for his brilliant tactical mind, hit-and-run warfare expertise, and ability to manipulate darkness and shadow.

The Disappearance of Corax

According to lore, Corax vanished into the Eye of Terror following the events of the Horus Heresy, consumed with grief and shame over the devastating losses incurred by his Legion. His current whereabouts and status remain unknown to the Imperium at large. Some believe Corax may have achieved apotheosis like his traitorous brethren, while others hold out hope their Primarch still lives. However, no concrete evidence exists to support any theory.

This has led to much speculation among fans over the fate of the mysterious Ravenlord.

Theories on Corax‘s Fate

Many possibilities exist regarding what happened to Corax after the Heresy. Here are some of the most prominent theories:

• He‘s still hunting traitors. Corax may have dedicated himself to hunting down the remaining traitor primarchs and their followers. A short story revealed Corax stalking Word Bearers through the Warp, suggesting he‘s become a primarch "Batman" of sorts.

• He achieved daemonhood. Exposure to the energies of the Eye of Terror could have transformed Corax into a daemon primarch, not unlike Fulgrim and Perturabo. In this form Corax may live on as a creature of the Empyrean.

• He‘s dead. Corax may have simply perished somewhere in the depths of the Eye at the hands of enemies or forces beyond his control. If so, his body has never been recovered.

• He‘s in hiding. Like his brother Jaghatai Khan, Corax may have retreated into seclusion, believing he can better serve the Imperium by working in secret. He may reemerge when needed most.

What Happened to the Other Missing Primarchs?

Corax isn‘t the only primarch whose fate remains unknown. Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars disappeared into the Webway and is believed to still be alive. Lion El‘Jonson of the Dark Angels slumbers deep within The Rock awaiting a time when he is needed again. Rogal Dorn of the Imperial Fists is also missing after attacking a Black Crusade fleet, though what exactly happened to him is disputed. Vulkan of the Salamanders has died many times, only to be reborn each time due to his Perpetual abilities.

The Significance of Corax‘s Last Words

According to the Lexicanum, Corax‘s last recorded words were simply "Never more." This seems a clear homage to Edgar Allan Poe‘s Gothic poem "The Raven," which famously ends:

"And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting. On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming, And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor. Shall be lifted—nevermore!"

By echoing this ominous line, Corax seemed to acknowledge the grim fate awaiting him, forevermore chained to the shadowy half-life of a being consumed by darkness – whether literally or metaphorically.

Corax‘s Vengeance Against Lorgar

Prior to vanishing, Corax sought to exact vengeance on his traitorous brother Lorgar and the Word Bearers Legion for their role in the Dropsite Massacre. Corax used unstable gene-craft to rapidly bolster his forces, and his new Raptors successfully assaulted the Word Bearers on several worlds. Though ultimately futile, this rampage highlighted Corax‘s grief, wrath, and relentless determination.

“Corax fights the Long War in the Immaterium, appearing when hope is lost, striking down the enemies of mankind with righteous fury and vengeance, only to fade away like a ghost when his works is done,” states Wargamer.

Corax vs. the Daemon Primarchs

If Corax did achieve daemonhood, how might he fare against ascended traitor Primarchs like Angron, Fulgrim, or Mortarion? As one of the most brilliant tacticians among the primarchs, Corax would likely rely on hit-and-run maneuvers and asymmetric warfare to counter the raw might of fallen brethren. His stealth abilities could allow him to choose the time and place of engagements on his terms. Ultimately though, even Corax‘s guile might not be enough to best the terrifying power of the Traitor Legions.

Corax in the Broader 40k Hierarchy

As a primarch, Corax stands high in the pantheon of 40k‘s most powerful entities, though well below the God-Emperor himself. Corax‘s abilities to transform into mist, pass unseen, and master warfare mark him as among the most dangerous of the primarchs. While he may not match Leman Russ in physical strength or Magnus the Red in psychic might, Corax‘s blend of cunning intellect, supernatural stealth and fury in combat make him a uniquely potent foe. Whether still prowling the shadows of the 41st millennium or long dead, the Ravenlord remains an iconic legacy of the Great Crusade.
