Dawn of Ragnarok is absolutely worth every penny for AC fans

If you‘re an Assassin‘s Creed fan, Dawn of Ragnarök is without question worth buying. This magical expansion delivers a completely fresh experience while retaining the best parts of Valhalla. With over 30 hours of content in a stunning Norse realm, thrilling new god powers, epic gear, and a great standalone story, Dawn of Ragnarök is a must-buy expansion.

As an AC superfan myself, I couldn‘t put Dawn of Ragnarök down. Exploring the alien world of Svartalfheim as Odin and unleashing his mystical abilities kept me grinning ear to ear. Ubisoft Montreal has crafted something truly special here – a worthy entry in one of my favorite franchises. So if you have even a passing interest in Assassin‘s Creed, trust me: picking up Dawn of Ragnarök is a decision you won‘t regret.

Why Dawn of Ragnarök is Worth Every Penny

Let‘s dive deeper into the major features that make Dawn of Ragnarök a must-buy:

A Massive New Realm that Feels Totally Alien

Svartalfheim is an entirely separate map from Valhalla‘s England or previous DLC areas. This alien realm spans misty forests, craggy mountains, and glittering caves across at least 30+ hours of content. As one of the only major Norse mythological realms we haven‘t seen in the series yet, exploring Svartalfheim feels incredibly fresh.

The environment design is truly stellar. Traversing Svartalfheim reveals new wildlife, resources, and surprises everywhere you look. You‘ll constantly stumble upon new puzzle vaults, bandit camps, world events, and landmarks. Ubisoft Montreal packed this realm densely with activities and rewards. After over 100 hours in Valhalla, I needed somewhere new to explore – and Svartalfheim delivers that in spades.

Hugr Powers Reinvent Exploration and Combat

Playing as Odin gives you access to his unique Hugr powers – nature manipulation abilities that completely reinvent exploration and combat. You can teleport across gaps, spawn vines to climb walls, or take control of enemies minds. These cosmic powers harmonize perfectly with your weapons and really shake up the gameplay.

Stringing together combos with your axes and powers feels great. Freeze a group solid then ignite the survivors, rot armor with decay blasts while summoning healing plants. The powers stay fresh and useful throughout thanks to clever upgrades. I loved experimenting with different combinations during combat.

Traversing the world also takes on new joy. Why climb when you can summon vines? Teleport up cliffs or scout ahead with your raven. The Hugr abilities could carry their own game, so experiencing them in a robust Assassin‘s Creed map is extraordinary.

An Epic Norse Tale Rooted in Mythology

Dawn of Ragnarök tells an original 30+ hour story that dives deep into Norse myth. After his son Baldr is captured, Odin journeys to the dwarven realm to rescue him. You‘ll team up with Thor, Freya, and dwarves while battling Surtr‘s fire giants.

The writing and voice acting bring this exotic realm to life. Seeing figures like Surtr and Yggdrasil from legend first-hand is a treat for mythology buffs. Svartalfheim houses some of the most memorable moments and set pieces in recent AC history.

Best of all, this tale stands independent from Eivor‘s journey. You don‘t need any Valhalla knowledge to enjoy this story. I loved seeing Odin‘s relationships and responsibilities as Allfather depicted so vividly. Dawn of Ragnarök tells an epic saga that rivals the franchise‘s best.

Jaw-Dropping Visuals and Score

Simply put, Dawn of Ragnarök is one of the most visually stunning Assassin‘s Creed worlds yet. Ubisoft Montreal leveraged next-gen power to make Svartalfheim‘s environments insanely detailed, from particle effects to the tiny textures. The realm genuinely feels like an alien planet while staying grounded.

Whether it‘s the golden leaves of the Alberich Hollow or Surtr‘s crystalline castle, this world constantly amazed me. God rays filter through the trees as magical armor sets glisten – Valhalla already impressed, but Dawn of Ragnarök takes it to new levels. This is a world that demands to be explored.

The orchestral score also amazed me. It retains Valhalla‘s melodies while introducing new harmonies and leitmotifs befitting the mystical realm. Dawn of Ragnarök sounds as good as it looks.

Satisfying Progression System with New Gear

Dawn of Ragnarök adds over a dozen new weapons and armor sets to Valhalla‘s roster. You‘ll find legendary blacksmith weapons alongside unique gear hidden across the realm. New equipment introduce exciting perks that complement Odin‘s abilities.

You can decrease teleport stamina costs, increase raven duration, conjure healing plants, and more. Mixing gear with Hugr powers lets you define your own Odin build. I loved seeking out armor that made my playstyle even more potent.

The DLC also raises the power level cap and streamlines upgrading weapons and gear. Svartalfheim contains plenty of resources to find, but you can buy materials from shops too. Progression always felt rewarding yet respected my time. Dawn of Ragnarök gets loot and upgrades right.

How Dawn of Ragnarök Improves on Valhalla

Beyond the major features covered above, Dawn of Ragnarök also introduces incremental improvements that enhance the overall Valhalla experience:

  • Stealth is more rewarding: With Odin‘s new abilities, stealth becomes far more engaging. You can use your raven to scout ahead or teleport between hiding spots to avoid detection. Stealth feels right at home in the fantastical realm.

  • Better integrated side content: Svartalfheim‘s side activities like treasures and artifacts tie tightly into progressing the story and upgrading Odin‘s powers. I felt motivated to complete side content, not just skip it.

  • Environmental puzzles enhance exploration: Throughout the world, you‘ll find puzzle vaults that challenge you to creatively use your Hugr abilities. These brain teasers encourage you to master your powers.

  • New gear stats and bonuses: The new weapons and armors contain perks that complement Odin‘s abilities and build diversity. You can fine-tune your build more than ever.

  • Higher power cap and streamlined upgrading: Reaching the new power level cap is intuitive with the new resources and instant material crafting. Progression feels meaningful and free of grind.

  • Fantastical set pieces and spectacles: Dawn of Ragnarök‘s world introduces incredibly memorable moments only possible in its Norse myth setting. I won‘t spoil anything here, but this expansion goes all-out on epic moments true to the setting.

Dawn of Ragnarök takes everything I loved from Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla and improved on it. This expansion represents a refined version of the RPG-lite formula Ubisoft has honed over Origins and Odyssey. If you ever wished Valhalla had more abilities, gear, progression, and creativity, Dawn of Ragnarök delivers all of that.

Room for Improvement

For all its accomplishments, Dawn of Ragnarök isn‘t flawless. During my 30+ hours in Svartalfheim, I noticed a few areas with room for improvement:

  • Repetitive combat: The core combat retains some repetitive elements from Valhalla, especially against basic enemies. Fights can devolve into button mashing at times.

  • Forced ability unlocks: Certain Hugr powers feel mandatory to unlock early, limiting your freedom to experiment with combos. You can‘t respec abilities either.

  • Underwhelming quests: Some story beats and quests fail to stick the landing. A few missions boil down to traveling long distances or clearing similar bandit camps.

  • Visually samey biomes: Apart from the starting forest region, Svartalfheim‘s areas blend together visually at times. More varied biomes could have pushed the fantastical setting further.

  • Occasional technical hiccups: As an expansive open world, I encountered some expected bugs like wonky AI behavior, clipping, or frame rate dips in busy areas.

To be clear, these shortcomings don‘t ruin the experience. But Dawn of Ragnarök isn‘t flawless. Its incredible strengths outweigh the negatives for me, but I‘d love to see these aspects improved in future AC titles.

Dawn of Ragnarök Ushers in an Exciting Future for Assassin‘s Creed

Dawn of Ragnarök represents a turning point for the Assassin‘s Creed franchise. This expansion proves that Ubisoft can still craft magical new worlds and abilities for veteran players. After a decade with the series, Dawn of Ragnarök recaptured the same sense of wonder I felt playing my first AC game.

I believe this expansion paves an exciting path forward. Dawn of Ragnarök hints at the wondrous settings, characters, and abilities the series could explore. Entire games set in other mythologies could introduce wild new mechanics and narratives.

Assassin‘s Creed has mastered the RPG-lite format – now it‘s time to leverage that to its fullest. Take the leap into the fantastical and let players experience history‘s greatest legends and myths firsthand. Imagine an AC game starring Hercules with god powers, or as Robin Hood roaming Sherwood Forest.

Dawn of Ragnarök shows what‘s possible, and I couldn‘t be more excited for the future. Ubisoft, if you‘re reading this, please make more game-changing expansions like this. I‘ll happily adventure through many more fantastical realms.

The Verdict: An Absolute Must-Buy for Fans

In case I wasn‘t clear yet, I wholeheartedly recommend Dawn of Ragnarök to any Assassin‘s Creed fan without hesitation. This expansion recaptures the franchise‘s glory.

Svartalfheim provides an utterly unique destination brimming with secrets. Odin‘s cosmic powers invigorate traversal and combat with magical abilities. The Norse tale lives up to mythic legends. Gorgeous visuals and score immerse you in a heavy metal album cover come to life. And new gear and progression offer fun character building.

Dawn of Ragnarök would be an accomplishment as a full standalone game. As an expansion, it exceeds expectations. This magical realm pulled me in for 30+ hours and left me eager for more. It reignited the childlike awe I feel exploring new Assassin‘s Creed worlds.

So if you have any fondness for Assassin‘s Creed, trust me: run, don‘t walk, to download Dawn of Ragnarök. This expansion deserves to stand shoulder to shoulder with the franchise‘s peaks. I wish I could experience this mystical journey again for the first time. But for now, I‘m eagerly awaiting whatever wondrous realms Ubisoft takes us to next.

The only question that remains is: what are you waiting for, my friend? Adventure awaits in the realm of Norse legend and magic!
