Is the Far Cry 6 DLC Worth It? My Expert Verdict

After carefully playing through all of the currently available DLC content for Far Cry 6, I don‘t believe the season pass is worth it for most players at full price. While the ability to play as iconic villains is appealing, the repetitive roguelite formula leaves the expansions feeling grindy and shallow. Unless you‘re a hardcore completionist who must play every bit of new Far Cry content, I suggest waiting for a sale before buying.

That said, Blood Dragon Classic Edition adds some nice bonus value to the pass, and the upcoming Joseph DLC may prove to be more substantive. Below I‘ll provide my full analysis of each expansion pack and who I think they are best suited for.

Evaluating the Value of the Far Cry 6 Season Pass

Ubisoft is offering a season pass for Far Cry 6 that includes 3 DLC story expansions and a copy of the 2013 retro classic Blood Dragon. Here‘s an overview of what you get:

DLC Chapters:

  • Vaas: Insanity
  • Pagan: Control
  • Joseph: Collapse

Other Content:

  • Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition

Price:

  • $39.99 for entire pass
  • $19.99 for each DLC separately

Based on my experience so far, I don‘t think the pass is a good value at full price. Each DLC provides only 6-8 hours of gameplay, featuring repetitive roguelite elements and limited narrative depth.

Blood Dragon is a fun extra, but still doesn‘t feel like enough added value to justify the cost. Let‘s take a deeper look at each expansion:

Vaas: Insanity – An Unfulfilling Descent Into Madness

Vaas Montenegro is one of the most memorable villains in Far Cry history, so the opportunity to step into his shoes had potential. Unfortunately, the execution leaves much to be desired, relying on repetitive combat encounters and procedural generation to pad out a pretty short experience.

The Good

  • Vaas is still creepily charismatic
  • Occasional flashes of insight into his backstory
  • Satisfying gunplay and stealth takedowns

The Bad

  • Very repetitive structure with random map layouts
  • Roguelite elements lack depth or variety
  • Short experience – beat main story in 4-5 hours
  • Minimal meaningful story development

This DLC simply lacks narrative substance or satisfying character progression for Vaas. It feels like going through the motions rather than gaining any deeper understanding of what makes him tick.

Score: 5/10

Verdict: Only buy this if you‘re a hardcore Vaas superfan hungry for more content with him. Wait for a deep sale otherwise.

Pagan: Control – A Decent But Forgettable Trip

Pagan Min was my personal favorite of the modern Far Cry villains, so I had high hopes for his DLC. And while Pagan: Control is certainly an improvement over Vaas: Insanity, it still suffers from many of the same cons of repetitive design and short length.

The Good

  • Pagan‘s wicked humor is intact
  • More varied procedurally generated terrain
  • Additional enemy types adds diversity

The Bad

  • Still a grindy roguelite at its core
  • Pagan as a character remains stagnant
  • Can be beaten in 6 hours or less
  • Not much narrative payoff

It‘s a fun if brief chance to cause chaos as Pagan, but nothing much here expands on his character or the world in a truly meaningful way.

Score: 6/10

Verdict: Buy on sale if you want more of Pagan‘s dark humor and antics in your life. Easy skip otherwise.

Joseph: Collapse – The Most Potential of the Bunch

Joseph Seed and his cult felt like a highlight of Far Cry 5, so I have higher expectations for this third DLC. Ubisoft has revealed very few details, but if the storytelling delivers, Joseph could be the most compelling expansion yet.

What We Know:

  • Play as Joseph Seed
  • Roguelite elements return
  • ~6-8 hours of content
  • Launches March 2022

Joseph was a much more layered villain than Vaas or even Pagan, with clearer motivations. Exploring his backstory and psyche could make for a fresh experience.

Early Verdict: Joseph‘s DLC has the most potential for meaningful narrative content and thematic depth. But execution will be key – wait for reviews.

Predicted Score: 7/10 if the storytelling delivers.

Blood Dragon – An A+ Blast From the Past

Blood Dragon is the real gem of the Far Cry 6 Season Pass. This retrofuturistic spinoff oozes neon style in an homage to 80s sci-fi. It‘s a delightful palate cleanser from the main games with a whip-smart and self-aware sense of humor.

The Highlights:

  • Perfectly nails the VHS era aesthetic
  • Tight 7 hour campaign
  • Goofy tone that pokes fun at action cliches
  • Rex Power Colt is a cyborg warrior for the ages

Blood Dragon is just plain fun in a way none of the other DLC manages to be. If you have any nostalgia for the 80s or just appreciate creative risks, don‘t hesitate to dive in!

Score: 9/10

Verdict: An absolute blast well worth experiencing, especially as a "free" bonus.

Weighing Up the Far Cry 6 Season Pass

So with all of that in mind, is the Season Pass worth buying? Here‘s a quick pros and cons rundown:

Pros

  • Play as fan favorite villains
  • Blood Dragon is a stellar bonus title
  • Joseph DLC has narrative potential

Cons

  • Vaas and Pagan DLCs are repetitive and short
  • Roguelite formula limits storytelling ability
  • 20 hours of content costs as much as full games

Overall Value Verdict:

Unless you absolutely must play every piece of new Far Cry content immediately, I suggest waiting for a 50% or greater sale before buying in. The pass simply doesn‘t provide enough compelling content to justify the $40 asking price.

Hardcore completionist fans will probably enjoy seeing their favorite antagonists from new perspectives. But more selective gamers are better off getting Blood Dragon separately and cherry picking any DLCs that review well on sale.

Ubisoft had a chance to expand meaningfully on fan favorite characters but opted for repetitive but profitable roguelite addons. Hopefully future seasons will offer meatier content!

The Bottom Line – My Expert Recommendation

Blood Dragon earns an enthusiastic recommendation, but the Vaas, Pagan, and Joseph DLCs vary from mediocre to just decent. At full price, the amount of content in the Season Pass feels woefully light.

I suggest most players wait for a 50%+ sale before buying in. The value just isn‘t there at $40. However, Far Cry super fans hungry for more will probably appreciate the chance to step into villainous shoes, repetitive structure and all.

My fingers are crossed that Joseph Seed‘s chapter raises the narrative bar when it launches in March. But past seasons have taught me to keep expectations measured. Consider carefully based on your love for the franchise.

That sums up my expert verdict! Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy gaming!
