Player models and faces look realistic enough, though some details like hair and uniforms appear less crisp than PS5‘s gorgeous 4K display. Shadows and lighting don‘t astound but avoid any major glitches or weirdness.

The crowds and stadiums immerse you in the atmosphere, despite sometimes lower-quality textures on elements like grass or ads along the boards. Overall fidelity is comparable to late PS3 games – not amazing, but far from an eyesore.

Most importantly, the graphics don‘t detract from smooth, responsive gameplay. While PS5 dishes out buttery 60 FPS action, the 30 FPS cap on PS4 is consistent and polished. I never experienced any annoying frame rate hitches or input lag to disrupt matches.

For casual players on budget TVs, FIFA 23 looks perfectly fine on PS4. However, videophiles with 4K displays will clearly prefer the visual leap provided by PS5 or Xbox Series X.

Gameplay and Modes – Virtually Identical PS4 vs PS5 Experience

Where FIFA 23 truly shines on PS4 is the stellar on-pitch action. Thanks to consistent frame rates and the refined HyperMotion 2 technology, matches feel smooth, responsive, and realistic.

I was thrilled to experience all the gameplay improvements like overhauled shooting and goalkeeper mechanics in full effect on PS4. Set pieces also offer way more creativity thanks to the new targeting system and varied shot styles.

Player movements look crisp and convincing during sprints, cuts, and skill moves. The ball physics allow for awesome curlers, chips, and long bombs. Defending also feels more balanced than the often overpowered contain moves of FIFA 22.

In terms of core modes, PS4 owners can enjoy deep Career Modes, addictive Ultimate Team squad building, fun casual games in Volta and Pro Clubs, and intense online Seasons. The only missing mode is the World Cup expansion exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

But throughout dozens of matches across Career, FUT, and online play, at no point did I feel like I was getting a watered-down last-gen experience. The stellar new gameplay improvements shone through just as well on PS4.

The reworked Chemistry system in Ultimate Team also adds more flexibility to link players from different leagues and nations. I had fun crafting creative hybrids, like a French/Colombian attack led by Benzema and Luis Diaz.

Pace remains highly effective if overused as always, but the gameplay improvements make build-up passing and clinical finishing more viable strategies. Against the AI on World Class and Legendary difficulties, I couldn‘t just spam through balls like in FIFA 22.

If you put dozens of hours into FIFA 22, I‘d highly recommend upgrading to experience the superior on-pitch product of FIFA 23. But more casual players will be just fine sticking with 22 for another year if they wish.

Is FIFA 23 Worth Full Price on PS4?

At the standard $59.99 USD price point, FIFA 23 is absolutely worth it on PS4, in my opinion as an expert player. The quality of the core 11v11 gameplay shines through brilliantly, even without fancy next-gen visuals.

In an era with few noteworthy competing soccer games to turn to, EA‘s proprietary Hypermotion technology keeps FIFA well ahead of eFootball and others in animations and responsiveness.
