Is FIFA 23 Worth Upgrading from FIFA 22? A Detailed Comparison

As a long-time FIFA player myself, I would say FIFA 23 is definitely worth upgrading to from FIFA 22 for most players. While not radically different, FIFA 23 provides noticeable improvements to gameplay, graphics, modes, and features that enhance the overall experience.

Gameplay and Physics

The biggest upgrade in FIFA 23 is the gameplay. EA‘s new HyperMotion2 technology with over 6,000 new animations makes everything feel more responsive, realistic and satisfying.

Passing is tighter and more accurate. Shooting is more consistent, with new physics making goals feel more natural whether shots curl into the corner or rip into the top netting. Dribbling allows more agility in maneuvering through defenses.

According to EA, FIFA 23 contains 4x more capture data than FIFA 22 for all aspects of gameplay. Over 300 match captures with professional teams yield advanced AI that makes teammates smarter and tougher to beat.

In my experience playing so far, these upgrades make FIFA 23 the most authentic simulation yet of real-life football. The new skill moves also provide creative options for beating defenders one-on-one.

Graphics and Presentation

Visually, FIFA 23 is a noticeable upgrade over FIFA 22. Everything from the players to crowds feels more lifelike.

Based on pre-release footage, FIFA 23 contains over 19,000 authentic scans of real-life players. Character models are more detailed with better faces, hair, and body types that reflect real-world attributes. Animations look tighter and reactions sharper, enhancing the realism.

Stadiums and crowds are also improved significantly. Over 100 stadiums now have broadcast-accurate lighting and graphics. Fans move and chant more realistically, reacting to the action on the pitch. These graphical upgrades make FIFA 23 the best looking FIFA title so far.

Women‘s Club Football

For the first time in FIFA, women‘s club teams from the English WSL and French D1 Féminine leagues are included. This is long overdue and a huge step for better representation.

Top clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City, Lyon, and Paris Saint-Germain are fully licensed with authentic kits and crests. While not as many teams or leagues as the men‘s side, it‘s still great to finally be able to play as women‘s clubs.

There is still room to expand the women‘s experience to match the depth of the men‘s game. But this inclusion provides a welcome new option for Kick Off, Career Mode, and online versus friends.

FIFA World Cup Content

EA will release a free major content update for FIFA 23 in November featuring the Qatar World Cup tournament. As a huge football fan myself, I‘m extremely excited for this.

The World Cup update will include all 32 qualified national teams with authentic kits, crests, and squads updated to match the real-life tournament. There will also be a new World Cup Live mode matching the schedule and results in real-time.

Based on the past FIFA World Cup content, this should provide a thrilling new way to experience the tournament within the game. The 2018 World Cup update for FIFA 18 was one of my personal favorites.

Career Mode Enhancements

Career Mode receives some nice upgrades in FIFA 23. Transfer analysis gives feedback on potential signings like positional needs squad role, and playstyle fit. A new player career personality system provides unique dialogue and comments based on your virtual pro‘s attributes.

Match prep allows setting strategic objectives for upcoming games that provide XP rewards when achieved. Other enhancements include transfer analyst feedback for transfer suggestions, expanded player development programs, and more.

For managers, these changes add helpful strategic elements and insights that previously felt lacking. The focus is still management over true simulation, but it‘s a good direction. Player career feels more defined with the new personality system. Though more interactions and off-pitch activities are still needed to truly immerse as a pro.

Volta Improvements

Volta returns with arcade-style 5v5 and 4v4 street football plus a new skill meter for moves. New gear and cosmetic items allow much deeper customization of your player avatar. And Volta Arcade introduces 1v4 minigames inspired by basketball‘s Dunk Contest and skill challenges.

As an occasional Volta player myself, these are welcome upgrades, especially the customization. But it remains a side mode due to the lack of depth in terms of a true story experience. Still, Volta is a refreshing change of pace at times from the core 11v11 matches. If you enjoy pick-up street football, the improvements make Volta worth revisiting.

Cross-Play Arrives

A highly requested feature, cross-play is finally implemented in FIFA 23. Gamers on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Stadia can play together in Online Friendlies, Online Seasons, FUT Rivals, FUT Champions, FUT Draft, FUT Play a Friend, and FUT Online Tournaments.

In my experience, cross-play has worked flawlessly so far, matchmaking quickly with no lag or technical issues. Opening the player pool is a big advantage, providing more opponents and reducing match wait times. This is an excellent addition that I hope becomes a FIFA mainstay for years to come.

Is FIFA 23 Worth Upgrading To?

For dedicated FIFA players and football fans, FIFA 23 is definitely worth upgrading to from FIFA 22. The gameplay improvements create a noticeably smoother and more realistic experience. Graphics, animations and presentation are first-class, capturing the essence of real-world football.

Major additions like women‘s club teams, cross-play, and the upcoming World Cup content expand and enhance modes. Nice upgrades to Career Mode and Volta provide more strategic depth. And on current-gen consoles, HyperMotion2 elevates FIFA‘s trademark gameplay to new levels of responsiveness and player intelligence.

However, more casual players may not find the changes significant enough to warrant paying full price. For them, waiting for a sale could be a better option. But overall, I would strongly recommend FIFA 23 to any fan hungry for the latest and greatest virtual football.
