Is Final Fantasy 14 Worth Playing in 2025? An In-Depth MMORPG Review

As a long-time Final Fantasy 14 player, I can confidently say that 2023 remains an excellent time to get into this stellar story-driven MMORPG. Here‘s a deep dive into why FF14 continues going strong into its 10th year, and why both new and returning players have so much to look forward to.

In short: With its incredible narratives, welcoming community, stellar updates, and bright future ahead, FF14 absolutely deserves a spot as one of the top MMORPGs to play right now. Read on for the details!

A Realm Still Full of Promise and Potential

Before getting into what makes FF14 so special, let‘s catch up on the game‘s current state.

FF14 continues to have an active playerbase of over 2.5 million monthly players as of February 2023. For reference, that‘s close to top dog World of Warcraft‘s reported 2.7 million monthly players in its last earnings update.

The Endwalker expansion in late 2021 has propelled the game to record numbers ahead of its 10 year anniversary. FF14 saw 24 million new player accounts created since mid-2019. Square Enix reports FF14 at an all-time high of 1.7 million daily active users.

While we likely won‘t see the next full expansion until 2024 at the earliest, 2023 promises consistent content drops. Players can anticipate major updates every 3-4 months adding fresh story quests, dungeons, raids, features, events, and more. 2022 saw comprehensive updates like Buried Memory, Somewhere in Neverwinter, and Elemut‘s Troubles with plenty to do.

Why does ongoing support matter? It provides existing players with regular new challenges and goals to chase. And it gives newcomers confidence that they‘re joining an alive, thriving world, not one slowly winding down.

Why Join the Adventure Now?

FF14 has so much to offer players of all types. Here‘s a deeper look at some of the key draws:

A Benchmark in MMO Storytelling and Lore

Ask any long-time player what keeps them coming back expansion after expansion, and they‘ll likely cite the engrossing, masterfully crafted narrative spanning 10+ years.

The writing and pacing make you truly care about this living world and role in it. You feel part of Tyria‘s history through your character‘s eyes.

From the rebirth of A Realm Reborn onwards, players have watched the city states band together to repel imperial invaders, traveled to the Far East, fought primal incarnations of myth and lore, and united against apocalyptic threats.

Now heading into Endwalker, you feel the weight of every accomplished quest and ally behind you. This expanding narrative gives meaning to the action.

And FF14 doesn‘t just tell its own contained story – it incorporates and remixes characters and lore spanning 30+ years of Final Fantasy history, giving fans an all-star reunion.

No other MMO can match Final Fantasy 14‘s memorable narratives and cast of characters. It‘s an RPG first, MMO second.

Visual and Auditory Artistry Bring the World to Life

From tranquil forest glades to bustling coastal ports, FF14‘s landscapes come to life through a meticulously crafted open world. Every new zone has its own personality, aesthetic, and ambience – the striking Azim Steppe, mystic peaks of Kholusia, and more.

Vistas beg to be screenshot. Details like swaying foliage, ambient wildlife, and changeable weather pull you in. No matter your destination, adventure awaits around every bend.

The same care extends to character and creature design you interact with. Seeing cities filled with diverse peoples and cultures makes FF14 feel remarkably alive and lived in compared to more static worlds.

And few gaming soundtracks can match the symphonic excellence of Masayoshi Soken‘s sweeping scores evoking emotion at every turn.

A Friendly Community Built on Kindness

All the visual splendor would mean little without a community to share it with. Thankfully FF14 boasts one of the most helpful playerbases in gaming.

Need guidance on where to go next or how a dungeon mechanic works? Ask in Novice Network chat and a Mentor will likely assist you within minutes. Struggling in a fight? Chances are a random passerby will stop and help you through it.

Of course, every game has its bad eggs. But FF14 players take pride in making newbies feel welcome. Lifelong friendships are forged through its shared adventures.

My own guild represents that spirit. We‘re always eager to run content with new folks while sharing laughs on Discord. Even after a bad run, people stay cool and regroup.

It‘s this kinship that keeps me logging in day after day. At its best, FF14 reminds us of our shared humanity (and quest for sweet loot).

Something for All Playstyles

Another strength of FF14 is its diversity of activities catering to all kinds of players:

  • For story-focused PvE players, you could spend months, even years on scripted narrative quests alone. Every job class and expansion packs their own 50+ hour tales.

  • For hardcore raiders and theorycrafters, grueling 8-player trials like The Final Coil, Eden‘s Promise, and The Epic of Alexander will test your skills and coordination. The races for World First completions generate hype.

  • For more casual players, you can easily float between low-pressure goals like leveling alt jobs, sightseeing, Gold Saucer minigames, Chocobo breeding, crafting/gathering, daily roulettes, seasonal events, treasure maps with friends, and open world FATEs. Take things at your own pace.

  • For solo-minded folks, you can now bring trusted NPCs into mandatory instanced dungeons via the Trust system, telling the stories at your own pace without relying on other players.

  • For economy-oriented players, diving into crafting and gathering offer their own deep systems to master, along with ways to earn loads of gil selling sought after goods.

  • For Final Fantasy fans, constant references, remixes of familiar faces, and crossover events with other FF titles create fun, rewarding nostalgia.

  • For social butterflies, player housing, venues like the Gold Saucer, and informal RP hubs in cities offer hangout options to bond with friends when you need a questing break.

No two players will have the exact same experience thanks to this range of activities. There‘s always another calling to pursue.

Adjusting to FF14 As a New Player

Being so robust, FF14 can seem intimidating at first, especially if you‘re fresh to MMORPGs. But the learning curve is very manageable with the right approach:

  • Follow the main story quests (MSQ) – These will gradually introduce you to all the core systems and unlock content/dungeons naturally. Avoid sidetracking too much early on.

  • Join the Novice Network – Mentors will answer questions and give advice in this chat channel. Great for guidance.

  • Take things slowly – FF14 is a marathon, not a sprint. Don‘t worry about mastering everything quickly. Focus on the MSQ, enjoying the journey, and learning at a comfortable pace.

  • Find a friendly guild – Having patient allies who can guide you through group content makes everything smoother. Guilds host their own events too.

  • Watch tutorial videos – If any system still confuses you, countless player guides exist on YouTube explaining concepts clearly.

Give yourself time to get used to key MMORPG elements like skill rotations, aggro management in dungeons, gear progression systems, and crafting workflows. The complexity just means you‘ll rarely run out of things to master!

What Does the Future Hold for FF14?

While Square Enix stays tight-lipped on specific expansion plans, they‘ve promised to support FF14 for at least 10 more years. The game will continue evolving in exciting ways:

  • New professions and player races seem likely based on past expansions. There are still plenty of unexplored cultures and regions ripe for introduction.

  • Evolving PvP functionality could attract more competitive players, with larger scale matches, rankings, and incentives. More custom arenas would be great.

  • Improved housing availability is desperately needed as plots remain scarce and expensive. Player housing is a huge part of FF14‘s social end-game.

  • Ongoing graphical upgrades will ensure the game stays beautiful as technology progresses. I‘d love to see ray tracing support down the line.

  • Class/job balancing is always ongoing to keep gameplay fresh and challenging. New healers, casters, and melee options could arise.

But the core of what makes FF14 so magical – a welcoming community, stellar storytelling, and rewarding progression systems – will stay consistent.

Should You Play FF14 in 2024?

Let‘s recap who Final Fantasy 14 is ideal for:

  • Final Fantasy fans eager to dive into an immersive new FF story and world
  • MMORPG veterans seeking deep, polished systems and raids
  • Friendly casual players wanting beautiful sights and fun social features without pressure
  • Solo players able to experience the MSQ independently
  • Roleplayers seeking an ideal venue for character interactions and relationships
  • Crafters/Gatherers wanting their own rich gameplay systems to master

The main caveat is that highly PvP-centric players may want to look elsewhere, as FF14 is focused primarily on PvE content.

Past that, nearly any gamer can find rewarding experiences within Eorzea, especially with friends. Few MMOs check as many boxes as Final Fantasy 14.

After hundreds of hours myself, I wholeheartedly believe new players joining now will have a tremendous journey ahead of them – well over a thousand quests, classes to perfect, challenges to overcome, lands to explore, and bonds to form.

Don‘t miss out on being part of FF14‘s inspiring community and the next decade of new adventures. Now‘s the time to begin writing your own tale!
