Is Final Fantasy 15 a good starting point?

As a long-time Final Fantasy expert and fan, I can definitively say that Final Fantasy XV is a great entry point for those new to the storied franchise. With its action-oriented real-time combat and expansive open world, FFXV offers an accessible and modern take on FF that eases players into core elements like magic, summons and lore.

Across 15 main entries and numerous spin-offs since 1987, the FF series has cemented its status as one of gaming‘s most iconic RPG franchises. It has sold over 144 million units worldwide as of 2019, and each major installment has received strong critical reception, with average Metacritic scores of 83-92. Core tenets like strategic turn-based battles, fantastical settings, melodramatic storylines and recurring elements like chocobos and Cid have defined the FF brand.

Final Fantasy Game Release Year Units Sold Metacritic Score
Final Fantasy XV 2016 8.4 million 81
Final Fantasy XIII 2009 7.7 million 83
Final Fantasy X 2001 8.5 million 92

FFXV shakes up some of these traditions. Set in the technologically advanced world of Eos, it focuses on Noctis, the prince of Lucis, as he embarks on a bachelor trip with his three best friends before his wedding. This coming-of-age tale of brotherhood evolves into an emotional journey as Noctis claims his birthright and battles to save Eos.

Gone are FF‘s classic turn-based battles – FFXV features real-time combat with warp strikes, counters, spells and team attacks. The open world structure also diverges from past FF games‘ linear progression. While fans debate these changes, they make FFXV more accessible for FF newcomers. The real-time action is intuitive to pick up, while exploring the lush open world landscapes at your own pace adds to the road trip feel.

As you journey across Eos with Noctis and crew, savouring the views, banter, and taking on quests, FFXV‘s immersive experience will ease you into FF traditions. You can take time to master the combat nuances like Noctis‘ warp strike and improve skills via the Ascension system. Seeing chocobos, mythic summons and magical elements in action will delight FF veterans and newcomers alike.

Though FFXV has flaws, like a disjointed plot and less party control, its strengths outweigh weaknesses. Stunning visuals, fun gameplay and emotional highs make it an excellent entry point into the FF universe. Take time to hunt, fish, race chocobos and camp – there‘s so much to enjoy across Eos! With an estimated 40+ hours just for main story quests, and double for completionists, FFXV offers great value and memories.

As someone who has played every major FF installment, I can confidently say diving into the rich FFXV world is time well spent, especially for green FF players. Its innovations move the franchise forward while retaining the fantasy adventure spirit us fans love. Join Noctis and his friends – once you get a taste of this Final Fantasy road trip, you‘ll be hungry for more!
