Is GTA 5 Considered an MMO?
Hey friend! As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I know you‘re curious if GTA 5 can be considered a true MMO. It‘s an interesting question, so let‘s dig into it together.
First off, what defines an MMO or MMORPG? These stands for "massively multiplayer online roleplaying game" – typically involving thousands of players interacting in a persistent open world. Games like World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV are prime examples.
So how does GTA 5 stack up? Well, let‘s break it down:
GTA Online‘s Multiplayer Structure
GTA Online does have multiplayer components, but it‘s instanced and limited:
- Max of 32 players per lobby rather than a massive shared world
- Sessions are separate instead of open/persistent
- You interact with only those in your current lobby
This is very different from true MMO worlds where you see thousands of fellow players as you explore.
In 2020, Rockstar reported peak online players for GTA 5 reached 13 million. Impressive yes, but divided amongst lobbies. A defining MMO like WoW can have millions playing on the same servers.
Lack of Traditional Character Progression
MMORPGs involve leveling up a character, unlocking new skills and loot that carry over between sessions. GTA Online lacks these traditional RPG systems.
There is some progression for your criminal enterprise and properties. But not character levels, classes, abilities, etc. Your bank account and possessions persist, but not an RPG-style character.
Limited Social/Economic Interaction
MMOs thrive on player interaction – joining guilds, trading, participating in a virtual economy. GTA Online has some basic multiplayer activities but very little compared to MMORPG depth:
- No guilds/clans or alliances
- Very limited trading/crafting economy
- No group questing system
- Minimal roleplaying opportunities
I‘d say GTA Online focuses more on tactical multiplayer gameplay than immersive worldbuilding.
Is GTA 5 Considered Open World?
Absolutely! GTA 5‘s sprawling single-player map is one of the most impressive open worlds ever created:
- Over 49 square miles of explorable terrain
- Densely packed with detail, Easter eggs and interiors
- AI citizens make the world feel alive
So in terms of open world freedom and scope, GTA 5 delivers in spades. It just doesn‘t transition that well to a shared online space.
GTA 5‘s Historical Sales Dominance
Even if not a true MMO, GTA 5 has achieved insane commercial success:
- Top selling PS3/PS4 game of all time with over 170M units sold
- Currently #2 highest selling video game ever behind Minecraft
- Made over $6 billion in revenue, outgrossing any media title ever
The only other franchises that come close are Mario and Pokemon. Rockstar really struck gold here!
The Takeaway: GTA 5 is Open World, Not MMO
At the end of the day friend, GTA Online incorporates some MMO features, but lacks the persistent worlds, roleplaying depth, and massive social interactivity of a true MMORPG.
However, GTA 5 remains one of the pinnacles of single-player open world design – and its online component offers a one-of-a-kind hybrid multiplayer experience.
So while not a full MMO, GTA Online provides really fun instanced multiplayer gameplay fused with GTA‘s signature style and charm. Personally, I find it a blast to play with friends!
