Is Guren Evil? A Complex Character Analysis from a Fan

Hey there! As a huge fan of the Seraph of the End series, I wanted to share my in-depth analysis on one of its most complex characters – Guren Ichinose. On the surface, Guren may seem like a villain who unleashed catastrophe onto the world. But looking closer reveals a much more nuanced personality beneath his ruthless exterior.

Getting to Know Guren: His History and Relationships

First, let‘s delve into Guren‘s background and what shaped him over the years. We know Guren was a child prodigy who rose quickly through the ranks of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. According to his friend Sayuri, Guren started off idealistic – a "hero of justice" type who wanted to reform the Army‘s corruption.

But the pressure and trauma he experienced changed him. By age 16, Guren was already commanding his own unit and had stained his hands with difficult choices. Nonetheless, Guren remains extremely protective of his friends and squadmates. He inspires fierce loyalty, especially from Shinya, his closest confidante.

A huge influence on Guren was his first love, Mahiru Hiragi. Their illicit experiments on the Seraph of the End are what started Guren down a darker path. When a deranged Mahiru became a demon and forced Guren to kill her, it left him ridden with guilt and abandonment issues.

Now Mahiru‘s spirit resides in Guren‘s cursed gear sword, able to control or manipulate him at times. Yet his love for her continues to drive his crusade against the Hiragis who covered up Mahiru‘s research.

Guren‘s other Achilles heel is his squad, who he views as family. Let‘s look at the key members:

Guren‘s decision to use the Seraph of the End to revive his dead squadmates after a tragedy is what directly triggered the virus apocalypse. So while Guren is responsible for unleashing catastrophe, he did so out of love for his friends, not evil intent.

Split Down the Middle: Savior or Destroyer?

So what about Guren‘s morality? Is he a compassionate savior or calculating destroyer? In truth, Guren seems eternally split between the two extremes.

There are times Guren fancies himself a messiah. He claims everything he does, however questionable, is for "the greater good." Other times Guren acknowledges he‘s strayed far from the righteous path. But he persists in his controversial experiments, believing the ends will justify the means.

We also have to wonder – how much is Guren driven by Mahiru‘s spirit when he makes sinister choices? Does she manipulate him beyond reason?

For his part, Guren does retain his humanity through it all. He seems to hope that Yuichiro, who reminds Guren of his younger idealistic self, will stay morally pure even if Guren cannot.

Looking ahead, I‘m really curious if Guren can ever find redemption, or if he‘s doomed to fall further into darkness. As a fan, I hope Guren can be redeemed, but I could also see things going tragically. Here are some possible theories on his fate:

• Redemption Arc: Guren renounces his demonic ties, destroys Mahiru-no-Yo, and sacrifices himself heroically for his friends.

• Corrupted Villain: Mahiru takes complete control over Guren, making him the major antagonist. He has to be put down by Yuichiro.

• Sacrificial Death: Guren dies tragically but his death helps save humanity. He finds redemption but doesn‘t survive.

• Morally Ambiguous: Guren continues operating in the gray, neither fully good nor evil. He stays a complex anti-hero.

Personally, I‘m rooting for redemption! He‘s done awful things, but also has real love for his friends. Maybe Shinya and Yuichiro can pull him back from the darkness. But whatever happens, Guren remains one of the most fascinating characters in this tragic series.
