Is Hitman 3 Worth It? A Detailed Look at IO Interactive‘s Latest

The short answer – yes, I wholeheartedly recommend Hitman 3 for fans of the stealth action genre. As someone who has played every game in the series and invested over 200 hours into the World of Assassination trilogy, I can confidently say that IO Interactive has delivered their best Hitman yet. Let‘s take an in-depth look at why it‘s worth the purchase.

Refining a Proven Formula

At its core, Hitman 3 continues the immersive stealth sandbox gameplay the series is acclaimed for. You are Agent 47, a ruthless assassin infiltrating complex locations to eliminate high-profile targets. How you accomplish the objective is up to you. The formula involves observation, preparation, and improvisation. I‘ve always loved how these games make you feel like the clever predator sizing up their prey.

IO Interactive smartly resists the urge to drastically alter the franchise‘s signature gameplay. Instead, they focused on refinements based on community feedback. For example:

  • Disguises now blend better with certain outfits, allowing you to explore more freely
  • NPCs have better peripheral vision and investigations making stealth more challenging
  • New shortcuts like the camera hack tool open up creative options
  • The ability to stow bodies in containers or hide them makes clean kills easier

These small but meaningful evolutions enhance player freedom while keeping the addictive core loop intact.

Sales and Player Data

Hitman 3 has been a commercial success, selling over 3 million copies in its first 10 days per IO Interactive. This opening week nearly doubled Hitman 2‘s debut sales.

Hitman 2 Opening Sales 1.8 million units
Hitman 3 Opening Sales 3+ million units

It also broke the franchise record for most players in its first week. So even though it‘s single player focused, Hitman 3 is seeing strong engagement.

Globetrotting Level Design

IO Interactive has done some of their best work crafting Hitman 3‘s six core campaign missions. Each location feels completely distinct and lived in. One mission takes place during an underground Berlin rave called Club Hölle that genuinely made me uncomfortable. The lighting effects and claustrophobic crowds are spectacular. Dartmoor is the complete opposite – a gorgeous English country manor where a murder mystery needs solving. The variety keeps gameplay fresh and surprises you with new challenges.

Here are some examples that showcase why Hitman 3‘s levels are so well made:

  • Intuitive layouts with many routes make exploring exciting
  • Challenging missions that force new strategies on subsequent playthroughs
  • Attention to detail from ambient dialogue to environmental storytelling
  • Verticality – multiple floors and stories to discover secrets
  • Interconnected elements and characters to manipulate

The environments strike a perfect balance of being dense with options but not overly complex. This is Hitman level design at its finest.

Level Unique Kills Examples

To highlight the creativity allowed in each level, here are some particularly fun kills I pulled off:

  • Dubai – Knocked the target off a ledge so his parachute opens, then shot the parachute
  • Dartmoor – Poisoned the target‘s whiskey so when he went outside to vomit, his own guard shot him
  • Berlin – Used a robotic toy car with explosives to take out a group of hostiles

This diversity of options keeps you constantly experimenting.

Story and Characters

Let‘s be honest – Hitman has never been known for its narrative depth. The stories mainly provide context for the missions. However, the overarching World of Assassination plot line that began in Hitman 1 actually gets some satisfying payoff in Hitman 3. Without getting into spoilers, it provides closure for Agent 47 rediscovering his past and wrapping up unfinished business.

Is it award worthy writing? No. But it gives narrative justification for 47‘s actions beyond just being assigned targets. Combined with fun NPC side stories you‘ll uncover while exploring, there‘s enough here to please fans invested in the trilogy‘s storytelling. Though newcomers will likely feel a bit lost.

Nearly Limitless Replay Value

With previous Hitman games, I often found myself losing steam after the 20 hour mark. You start to recognize the patterns and ideal paths. Hitman 3 manages to keep you engaged far longer thanks to:

  • Mission stories – unique level-specific challenges that unlock new options
  • Escalations – tricky variants on levels that change rules/requirements
  • Elusive targets – time-limited hits in locations with no second chances
  • Featured contracts – player-created hits with specific requirements
  • Weapon/item unlocks tied to different challenges

There‘s also special assignments reserved for players who complete all the mission stories. I‘m over 50 hours into the game and still discovering new areas or kill methods. The post-launch content roadmap also promises new seasonal events and missions. Overall, Hitman 3 has tremendous replay value.

Post-Launch Content Examples

To give you an idea of the ongoing content additions, so far IO has added:

  • 5 new escalation contracts
  • The Tactical Turtleneck suit unlock
  • 3 elusive targets in Sapienza, Dubai, and Dartmoor
  • Featured contracts from the community

This steady stream of content will keep players returning.

Verdict: This Is a Must-Buy

Hitman 3 takes everything that made the previous World of Assassination games special and improves upon it. The result is a best-in-class stealth sandbox experience. With some of IO Interactive‘s best level designs yet, meaningful gameplay enhancements, and nearly endless replay value through challenges and live content, Hitman 3 is absolutely worth the purchase price. I highly recommend picking it up – you‘ll pull off some of the most creative and satisfying assassinations in franchise history. Now get out there and hunt some targets, Agent 47! Just make sure you have an escape plan first.
