Hey friend! Is it Really Necessary to Level 90 Your Genshin Characters?

As your adventure in Teyvat continues, you‘ve probably noticed leveling up your favorite characters takes more and more resources. I‘m sure you‘ve wondered – should I keep investing in getting my main team to level 90? Or is stopping at 80 or 70 enough?

Great question! Let‘s look at the costs, benefits, and who really needs level 90 to determine if it‘s worth it for your heroes.

The Incredibly High Costs of Leveling from 80 to 90

Reaching level 80 is a big milestone, but going those last 10 levels costs an insane amount of books, mora, materials, and time. Let‘s see just how much:

As you can see in the table, it takes 3 Legendary Wanderer‘s Advice and 42 Epic books to go from 80 to 90 – that‘s over 1,260,000 mora‘s worth of books alone!

For perspective, getting a brand new character to level 80 takes around 1 million mora total. So just those last 10 levels cost more than taking someone to 80!

That‘s 168 Cecilia‘s, Violetgrass, or other regional materials from 80 to 90. It takes about 680 total from level 1.

• You need 46 more to ascend to 90, so 92 total from 80 to 90

And the mora costs are massive too:

• 420,000 mora from 80 to 90
• Around 2.5 million mora total from level 1 to 90!

Looking at all these materials, you can really see why so many players stop at 80. Those last 10 levels take almost as many resources as raising a brand new character to 80/80!

But let‘s look at why you may still want to take certain characters all the way…

The Benefits of Level 90 Characters

There are some good reasons you may want to invest in getting select characters to 90 despite the huge costs:

1. Increased Stats

Leveling to 90 increases your character‘s base HP, ATK, DEF, and Elemental Mastery.

For example, your CRIT-scaling DPS like Hu Tao will gain 900+ ATK from levels 80 to 90. Support characters like Bennett gain 2500+ HP. So their talents and abilities do hit harder thanks to the extra stats alone.

2. Talent Level Cap Increase

Here‘s a big one. At 80/90 or 80/80, your talents only go to level 9.

But at 90/90, you can increase your talents to level 10 through crowning.

That boosts your damage, healing, or other effects even further.

3. Reaction Damage

Swirl, Overload, Electro-Charged and other transformative reactions scale off the level of the triggering character.

So Anemo characters like Xiao, Kazuha, Venti, Heizou, and Sucrose gain a ton from level 90. Their Swirls hit much harder.

Other elemental reactors like Keqing, Fischl, Beidou, and Klee also benefit.

4. Co-op Power

In co-op, your character‘s levels are synced down to the World Level cap of 80.

So having a level 90 DPS makes them stronger compared to the capped level 80 characters of your co-op teammates.

5. Completion

For some players, getting their main DPS waifu or husbando to 90/90 is about completion and achievement.

It shows off dedication by getting them to the max level with triple crowned talents.

Who Really Needs Level 90?

Considering the huge costs and benefits, which characters should you prioritize taking all the way to 90?

Top Priority for Level 90

• Anemo characters – Swirl scales incredibly well with level. Prioritize Xiao > Kazuha > Venti > Sucrose > Heizou based on DPS role.

• Main on-field DPS – Your hypercarry characters like Ganyu, Ayaka, Yoimiya, Itto, etc. need level 90 to unlock their full damage potential.

• Transformative reactions – Fischl, Beidou, Klee, Diluc, etc. get great value from level 90 electro-charged, overload, and reactions.

Good at 80/90

• Sub DPS – Flexible. Fischl, Xiangling, Beidou, Xingqiu etc. are often fine at 80/90 but can be rewarding to 90.

• Supports – Level alone doesn‘t increase buff/heal strength much. Keep Bennett, Zhongli, Diona, etc. at 80/90.

Low Priority for Level 90

• Characters you don‘t use extensively or haven‘t invested in much yet. Wait to level them more later.

• Characters you specifically play in co-op only. Since co-op caps at level 80, no need to go higher.

• Decent sub DPS characters you don‘t rely on as much. 80/90 still unlocks key talent levels.

• When resin is scarce and other characters need levels first. Books and mora can be better spent.

What About Kokomi?

As an off-field hydro applicator and healer, Kokomi gains:

• 600 HP
• 24 ATK
• Healing Bonus scaling
• Hydro damage bonus

Her HP and healing bonus helps her heals. But since she‘s not used for her normal attacks, the ATK and talent levels aren‘t as useful.

Verdict: Kokomi benefits a bit from level 90 but doesn‘t need it like on-field DPS characters. I recommend leaving her at 80/90 until your main DPS are 90/90 first. Then you can decide if you want to invest further.

How Much Does Level 90 Really Improve?

While reaching level 90 seems prestigious, if we look at the stat increases, they‘re actually pretty minor in the grand scheme:

• 3-5% HP increase
• 7-10% ATK increase
• 3-5% DEF increase
• 25 Elemental Mastery

Not groundbreaking compared to the costs. Talents, weapons, artifacts, reactions, and team synergy impact your damage far more than the stats from 80 to 90 alone.

But for your absolute favorite characters, the talent levels, achievement, min-maxing, and reaction damage can make 90 rewarding. Just carefully weigh if the costs are justified!

TL;DR – Who Really Needs Level 90

• Costs are massive – around 2.5M mora, 420 books, 680 local materials, and 92 boss drops to reach level 90.

• Benefits are increased stats, higher talent levels, stronger reactions, achievement, and min-maxing potential.

• Prioritize your main DPS, Anemo, and transformative reaction characters first.

• Many supports are fine at 80/90. Kokomi also doesn‘t gain as much from 90.

• Level 90 isn‘t required but can be rewarding for your top favorites when resources allow.

So is it necessary to level 90 your Genshin Impact characters? Only for some. My advice is to focus on your absolute mains first. Supports and sub DPS heroes can wait.
