Is John Wick 4 the last one?

Keanu Reeves himself confirmed this strategy in 2020:

“It’s really exciting to have this chapter evolving, and I love the character so much and enjoy telling his story. So to have the opportunity to embody John Wick in a fifth chapter is truly an honor.”

But somewhere along the way, that scheme changed. Now Chapter 4 has arrived without immediate plans for a sequel.

Does the ending of Chapter 4 provide closure?

Looking at how the fourth movie concludes, we find some resolution but also threads left enticingly unresolved.

John is no longer excommunicado after fulfilling his obligations. His friend Winston calls for parlay and survives the Adjudicator‘s vengeance. And the Bowery King is left recovering, his rebellion still hidden for now.

Yet the High Table and their forces remain at large with mysterious motivations. As Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman notes:

“By the end of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,‘ the overarching franchise has been left gratifyingly unfinished. There are still ample bad guys out there for Baba Yaga to kill.”

This ambiguity leaves the door open for more – but could also provide a sufficiently climactic conclusion if need be.

When might we hear news about John Wick 5?

While Reeves and director Chad Stahelski say nothing is guaranteed yet, we‘ll likely get a clearer picture on a potential sequel in the coming months.

Studios typically assess box office performance and audience reactions as critical data points when deciding on greenlighting sequels for major franchises.

If Chapter 4 continues its strong theatrical run, a formal announcement of John Wick 5 entering pre-production could come before the year is out. Of course, Reeves would need to sign on to reprise his signature role.

What about spinoffs – could the series continue without Reeves?

We can‘t have John Wick without Neo – Reeves‘ stoic presence defines these films. But the studio is exploring expanding the franchise‘s universe with origin stories focused on side characters.

A prequel titled Ballerina starring Ana de Armas as a young assassin out for revenge is slated for 2024. And series writer Derek Kolstad has hinted about interest in exploring where John came from.

So if Reeves ultimately decides he‘s ready to retire his guns and suit, it‘s possible the unique world of the Continental Hotel and High Table could live on through adjacent projects. Personally though, I think fans are hungry for more tales directly focused on Baba Yaga himself.

The keys to unlocking John Wick 5

Based on everything we know so far, the major factors that will determine whether John Wick: Chapter 5 happens are:

• Profitability – the studio will want to see Chapter 4 continue turning a healthy box office profit before approving another expensive production.

• Keanu‘s willingness – Reeves seems eager to keep playing John Wick as long as there‘s more story to tell. But he‘s at a point where he can be selective, so his enthusiasm is essential.

• Fan demand – if audiences make it loud and clear we aren‘t ready to say goodbye to Mr. Wick, that could motivate the studio.

• Creator vision – Chad Stahelski‘s creative direction has defined these films, so whether or not he feels there are more chapters left will be critical.

So in summary, my friend – while John Wick: Chapter 5 isn‘t guaranteed yet, there are good reasons to stay hopeful. This franchise clearly has momentum.
