Is John Wick Still Excommunicado? A Deep Dive for Fellow Action Fans

Hey there! As a fellow action movie buff, I know you’re probably wondering like me – with the latest John Wick movie, is our favorite laconic assassin still excommunicado? To dig into this, let’s first quickly recap what it means to “go excommunicado” in the Wick universe.

What Being Excommunicado Means

When an assassin breaks the rules hard enough, the High Table declares them excommunicado. This means:

  • Complete exile – no help or sanctuary from the underworld network. Not even the Continental Hotel, the assassin’s holy ground, can take them in.

  • All services cut off – no doctors, guns, nothing available to an excommunicado assassin.

  • Open contract – all members of the network can kill them on sight, no questions asked.

Basically, it’s a death sentence unless the assassin can take on the world alone. As Winston tells John, “you are a walking dead man.”

Pretty rough, right? Now let’s look at how John Wick ended up in this terrible situation.

How John Ended Up Excommunicado

John had left his assassin days behind. But an old ally, Santino D’Antonio, shows up calling in a “blood marker” – an unbreakable vow. Santino forces John to do an impossible mission.

After John succeeds, Santino wants to tie up loose ends by having John kill himself. When John refuses, Santino destroys his home.

Enraged, John kills Santino inside the Continental hotel, violating the neutral ground rules. Winston, the Continental manager, regretfully makes John excommunicado.

Thus begins John’s war against the underworld network trying to collect the $14 million bounty on his head.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – All-Out War

Chapter 3 shows John fighting countless assassins as a lone wolf. Winston secretly tells John the only way to end his excommunicado status is killing the High Table’s leader.

John reaches the edge of the underworld but ultimately spares the High Table head. He just wants to leave this world behind.

After an insane hall of mirrors shootout, John ends under the protection of the Director, his old mentor. But he knows it’s only temporary…

In the shocking climax, Winston seemingly seals John’s fate by shooting him off a rooftop. John’s still excommunicado, it appears.

John Wick: Chapter 4 – No Way Out?

In Chapter 4, John asks former enemy the Bowery King for help against the High Table. But the King says “The High Table wants you dead. And no one wants to help you because the High Table wants them dead too."

So John’s still totally alone and hunted, it seems. But he convinces the Bowery King they must work together.

John gathers allies old and new for an against-all-odds suicide mission against the High Table. In awesome global action scenes, John takes them on.

At the end, John and his crew prevail, decimating the High Table leadership. The closing scenes show John being symbolically marked to indicate his excommunicado status is lifted.

Analyzing John Wick’s Excommunicado Status

Looking at all the events of Chapters 3 and 4, it seems John Wick is no longer excommunicado. Some key evidence:

  • In Chapter 4, John is clearly still being hunted and unable to get help from the underworld. This indicates his excommunicado order stands.

  • John had to wage all-out war against the High Table to beat them by force. This was likely the only way to get them to rescind excommunicado status.

  • The symbolic tattoo John receives at the end of Chapter 4 strongly implies his excommunicado order has been revoked.

  • With the High Table severely weakened, they lost the power to enforce excommunicado contracts.

Based on this, I’d argue the films make it clear John is no longer excommunicado by the events of Chapter 4. But let’s look at some counterarguments:

  • We don’t explicitly hear any statements that John’s excommunicado order is rescinded.

  • Killing the High Table’s leaders doesn’t necessarily mean they lift the order. They might still want him dead out of vengeance.

  • The ending leaves John‘s future uncertain – does he rejoin the underworld, or go his own way?

So while it seems like John‘s excommunicado status is lifted, some gray area remains. The door is open for more movies to clarify!

John Wick Excommunicado Status: The Fan Theory

Personally, I have my own theory on whether John is still excommunicado. I think Winston actually secretly helped orchestrate John’s war against the High Table.

My evidence:

  • Winston clearly hates the High Table for forcing his hand against John. He seems to want revenge.

  • It’s suspicious that John survives the long fall from the rooftop. Maybe Winston ensured there was something to break his fall?

  • Winston and John exchange a subtle look at the end. Perhaps a sign of a covert alliance?

So my take is Winston made a secret deal to help John decimate the High Table in return for freeing him from excommunicado status. But this is just my fan theory for now!

The Outcome for John Wick

While his path was unclear for much of Chapters 3 and 4, it seems John Wick did the impossible once again – he took on the entire underworld and came out the other side, no longer excommunicado.

The question is, what does his future hold? Will he stay free from the underworld, or get pulled back into the orbit of the Continental Hotel and the dark struggles for power among assassins?

We’ll have to wait for John Wick: Chapter 5 to know for sure! But for now, we can say it appears his days as a marked man are in the past. Thanks for reading this deep dive into all things excommunicado. Let me know if you have any other theories!
