Is Madden 23 better than Madden 22? The Short Answer is Yes, with Some Caveats
As an avid Madden player for over a decade and self-proclaimed football obsessed fanatic, I get asked this question a lot lately. So let me start right off the bat by saying that yes, Madden NFL 23 is an improvement over Madden 22, especially when it comes to next-gen consoles. However, it‘s not necessarily leaps and bounds better, and the changes are a bit more subtle on older consoles. There are some clear upgrades, but also still some lingering issues. Let me break it down for you in detail so you can decide if it‘s worth upgrading this year based on what aspects of Madden you care about most.
Visual Presentation and Graphics
The graphics, player models, uniforms, stadiums, crowds, lighting, textures, and overall visual presentation have noticeably improved in Madden 23 compared to 22. Player faces and likenesses are more realistic – Tom Brady definitely looks more like his age now! The environments feel more immersive and "next gen" thanks to technology like 3D grass on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. While not photorealistic, things are sharper and cleaner with enhanced detail.
On next-gen, Madden 23 is a visual showcase with all the camera cuts, replays, stat overlays and broadcast flair you‘d expect from an actual CBS or Fox telecast. On older consoles, the upgrades are present but dialed back. Still, across the board the visuals have taken a solid step up this year. Madden 23 catches your eye in a way 22 didn‘t.
Gameplay and Physics Engine Upgrades
This is the big one where Madden 23 really steps it up – at least on newer consoles. The new FieldSENSE engine with over 3,500 new super-fluid animations completely transforms the on-field gameplay. All the moves, tackles, blocks, runs, and hits have so much more realism and weight to them.
As a running back, you can really feel the foot planting and momentum as you cut and find holes. Defensive linemen can shove past blockers with force. Gang tackles truly envelop the ball carrier. This is where the gameplay finally lives up to what we expect from "real" football. Major credit to the devs for this huge leap in realism and player control.
Sadly, this FieldSENSE system is only available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Last-gen gamers don‘t get the benefit of this overhaul. The gameplay on PS4 and Xbox One instead remains very similar to Madden 22 – still solid but not mindblowing. For newer console owners though, FieldSENSE alone is worth the upgrade. It‘s that game changing.
Franchise Mode Improvements
Franchise mode has received criticism over the past few years for not having enough depth and customization options. Madden 23 makes some decent strides to improve the experience. Scouting has been streamlined to make drafting prospects less of a shot in the dark. As a coach you now have a skill tree to unlock perks that benefit your team. Players have personality traits that influence their free agency decisions. And the addition of player goals and incentives allows you to shape your roster construction and playing time distribution in an organic way.
Are there still areas EA could build on? Absolutely. But overall the franchise enhancements provide much needed layers that make managing a dynasty more engaging. As someone who logs many hours in franchise, I‘m thrilled they didn‘t ignore it this year. The ability to better personalize my team‘s identity and growth trajectory is a big plus in Madden 23.
Defensive Scheme Flexibility
Madden 23 allows for more pre-snap defensive control than ever before. I‘ve been having a blast experimenting with different defensive fronts, blitzes, coverage shades, and personnel packages. You can really tailor your scheme each week to attack your opponent‘s weaknesses. I love trying to disguise my true intentions until the last second before the snap – do I actually drop my linebacker in coverage instead of blitzing? Does my corner bail out or press? There are so many combinations to leverage now.
As a defensive-minded coach, I live for this level of flexibility and deception in frustrating opposing QBs. It keeps me on my toes trying to call the right defense each play while reacting to my opponent‘s adjustments. Kudos to EA for opening up the full playbook on defense.
My Bottom Line Recommendation
If you primarily play on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, the upgrade is 100% worth it. The visuals, presentation, and most importantly FieldSENSE gameplay are real game changers you need to experience firsthand. Franchise and defense have also taken big steps forward. This feels like a true next-gen version.
Old gen gamers face a tougher call. You‘ll get nicer graphics and the improvements to franchise, defense, rosters, etc. But without FieldSENSE, it won‘t feel hugely different. I‘d say find a way to try it first before committing.
Across the board though, Madden 23 demonstrates that real, tangible progress is still being made. As a day one buyer every year, even I was shocked at how notably better 23 feels.
