Is Miles Morales worth it on ps4? Yes, absolutely – a thrilling experience for Spider-Man fans despite some visual downgrades.

As an avid gamer and huge Spider-Man fan, I‘ve been eagerly anticipating taking Miles Morales‘ latest web-swinging adventure for a spin ever since it first launched alongside the PlayStation 5 in late 2020. Like many fellow players, I‘ve been weighing whether it‘s worth picking up to replay on my PlayStation 4 – does it hold up visually? Does it feel like a full, satisfying experience or just glorified DLC? After much deliberation, I‘m happy to report that Miles Morales is absolutely worth playing on PS4, delivering an exciting superhero story with the amazing web-slinging gameplay I crave.

While it doesn‘t push the graphical limits of newer hardware, Miles Morales still looks beautiful on PS4 and plays smoothly at 30 frames per second. The immersive open world and cinematic storytelling drew me in for a solid 10-15 hours. Creative use of Miles‘ unique bio-electric Venom abilities spices up the familiar combat and stealth gameplay in fun ways. And Miles proves to be a compelling protagonist with plenty of heart. For Spider-Man fans without a PS5 yet, you shouldn‘t hesitate to give Miles Morales a swing.

A Visual Spectacle on PS4 Despite Technical Compromises

As a major PlayStation title available on both PS4 and PS5, there‘s no denying that Miles Morales had to make some graphical compromises on last-gen hardware. It renders at a 1080p resolution and targets 30fps, whereas the PS5 version can display at a crisper 4K resolution and smooth 60fps. But don‘t think Miles Morales is an ugly runt – Insomniac‘s talented artists have crafted a breathtaking open world that comes alive with visual splendor and attention to detail.

Swinging through the bustling city streets as Miles, I was continually impressed by just how good this game looks running on a base PS4. The recreation of Harlem captures the neighborhood‘s unique vibrant culture. Textures and materials are rendered realistically, from the sheen on Miles‘ Spider-Man suit to the weathered brick walls of an alleyway. And characters are brought to life with remarkably expressive faces that convey every emotion. Even in heated combat, effects like sparks and debris kick up to make each punch resonate.

Console Resolution Framerate
PS5 (Performance Mode) 4K 60fps
PS4 1080p 30fps

It‘s definitely true that some environmental details are dialed back compared to the PS5 version after close scrutiny side-by-side. But judged on its own merits, Miles Morales represents the peak of what PS4‘s 8-year-old hardware can achieve visually in capable hands. Dozens of reviews praised just how great it looks even as a cross-gen release. Eurogamer called it "a visual stunner and an essential showcase for 60fps gaming." Game Informer said "the visuals regularly stop me in my tracks." Destructoid described it as "one of the best-looking games on the platform."

For a cutting-edge showcase of next-gen technology, PS5 is the way to go. But Miles Morales on PS4 is still a visual treat I never tired of gazing at. The polished graphics and fluid performance fully immersed me in Miles‘ story without distraction.

Web-Swinging & Combat Feel As Good As Ever

Of course, impressive graphics only go so far – the excellent web-swinging traversal and combat that made Spider-Man on PS4 so fun needed to be just as smooth and intuitive. I‘m happy to confirm swinging around Insomniac‘s stunning recreation of Manhattan and kicking bad guy butt felt instantly familiar and fluid. Animations when transitioning between movements and attacks are impressively seamless. Combat moves at a blistering pace whether stringing together melee combos or dodging and countering. Before I knew it, I slipped back into that satisfying flow state from the first game.

Core web-swinging mechanics are unchanged, allowing effortless motion through the massive open world. A key new addition is Miles‘ "Venom jump" – basically a supercharged jump that propels you even higher and faster across gaps. Between webs and Venom jumps, getting around never felt better. Miles also possesses a temporary cloaking ability, making stealth viable when you‘d rather avoid enemies. But unless you force yourself to be stealthy, odds are you‘ll be diving headfirst into most encounters.

Fighting enemies as Spider-Man is probably Miles Morales‘ most addicting activity, and the PS4 version does not disappoint. Animations are so fluidly strung together it feels like you‘re orchestrating an acrobatic dance tearing through the opposition. Seriously, the combat animators at Insomniac deserve major praise for their work. Clearing out enemy bases and random crime events throughout the city stayed exciting from start to finish. Unlocking new combat skills and suit mods kept progression going steadily. Between missions, I happily spent hours taking on extra side activities and collecting collectibles spread across the map.

If you loved Spider-Man on PS4, nothing changes here. Miles Morales builds on that rock-solid gameplay foundation. Mastery comes quickly, empowering you to perform truly superhuman feats. This smooth gameplay provided the base that allowed me to fully immerse in Miles‘ journey.

Miles Morales Delivers a Thrilling, Emotional Coming-of-Age Story

Where Miles Morales really soars above expectations is in its story and characters. At around 10 hours long, this standalone adventure packs a surprising amount of heart into a compact experience. On the surface, it hits the superhero story beats you‘d expect – high-tech action, over-the-top villains, plenty of quips. But at its core, this is a thoughtful coming-of-age tale about Miles learning to embrace his identity as Spider-Man while navigating personal relationships.

Insomniac‘s writing team did a phenomenal job making Miles instantly likeable and relatable. He‘s portrayed as an earnest, intelligent teen who genuinely cares for his family and neighbors in Harlem. He never comes off cocky about his abilities, only wanting to use them to do the right thing. But he is still a kid struggling with the immense pressures and responsibilities suddenly thrust upon him. Over the course of the story, you see Miles really come into his own as he forges his own path separate from Peter Parker‘s legacy.

These themes hit home for me and elevated the experience. Balancing Spider-Man duties with normal teenage life leads to plenty of funny and heartfelt moments I won‘t spoil. Miles‘ diverse supporting cast, like best friend Ganke and mysterious ally Hailey Cooper, is full of great characters. And later story revelations deliver an emotional gut punch if you let these characters into your heart. The voice acting performances are superb across the board.

After the credits rolled on Miles‘ journey, I was blown away that Insomniac managed to create such a compelling self-contained story in a game of this scope. Miles Morales stands on its own narratively – you don‘t need any prior knowledge of the first game. If you take the time to appreciate both the high-flying set pieces and quiet character moments, it sticks with you.

Great Value Proposition Now at Discounted Price

Considering its shorter length compared to full-sized sequels, the initial $50 asking price for Miles Morales was seen by some as relatively high. But with discounts, Miles Morales now provides outstanding value and bang-for-your-buck for the quality you get. It‘s readily available physically and digitally for only $20 – $30 now. At that price point, it‘s easy to recommend to all PS4 owners as an essential exclusive.

I ultimately spent around 18 hours completing all the story missions, side content, and collectibles until I had 100% completion in the game tracker. Your playtime may be closer to 12 hours if focusing just on the main story. While Miles Morales doesn‘t have the dozens of hours of content featured in Marvel‘s Spider-Man, it never felt like it overstayed its welcome either. I was fully engrossed for the entire playthrough and walked away immensely satisfied.

For fans who want even more web-slinging action, you can buy Miles Morales bundled with Spider-Man Remastered – an enhanced version of the original game featuring Peter Parker. This combo includes the complete superhero experience on PS4 for only around $50-$60. Considering you‘re getting two stellar games, this is a tremendous value.

The Verdict: An Absolute Blast Despite Some Visual Compromises

As a huge superhero fan who grew up idolizing Spider-Man, I may be biased. But I wholeheartedly recommend Miles Morales to any PS4 gamer looking for a fun, heartfelt experience that does the iconic web-slinger justice. Swinging around Manhattan as Miles Morales never loses its thrill. The combat makes you feel powerful while requiring skill. Miles himself brings a lot of likable personality and heart to ground the blockbuster spectacle.

Make no mistake – Miles Morales has some graphical compromises on PS4 compared to the splendor of 4K/60fps fidelity on PS5. If cutting-edge visuals are your priority, playing on PlayStation 5 is best. But in no way do the visuals detract from the incredible experience for me. Miles Morales represents a technical marvel leveraging every ounce of PS4‘s power to create a gorgeous open world. And its performance remains rock-solid at 30 frames per second whether exploring or fighting enemies.

For fans eager to dive back into Insomniac‘s amazing reimagining of the Spider-Man universe, I couldn‘t recommend Miles Morales on PS4 more. You‘ll swing across a stunning Manhattan, take down nefarious villains, and watch Miles grow on a personal level. It delivers everything I wanted out of a follow-up to one of my favorite PS4 games. Considering it now sells at budget prices under $30 routinely, it‘s an absolute steal. Don‘t hesitate to give this adventure a spin if you‘re clinging to your PS4 – it‘s Miles better than you‘d expect!
