Is Pokémon Legends: Arceus Worth Buying? The Definitive Guide

Hey there fellow Pokémon fan! As a long-time player and gaming business analyst, I‘m here to give you my definitive insider‘s take on whether Pokémon Legends: Arceus is worth picking up. After over 50 hours roaming the Hisui region, I‘m ready to break down exactly why this reimagining of the Pokémon formula should absolutely be on your radar!

A Totally Fresh Open-World Adventure

Legends: Arceus finally realizes the full open-world potential of the Pokémon universe. The five sprawling areas of the Hisui region are a joy to explore with diverse biomes, wandering Pokémon, and hidden surprises awaiting around every corner.

Trekking through atmospheric woodlands, scaling frosty mountains, and sailing across crystalline lakes brought the Pokémon world to life like never before. Previous games kept you confined to rigid routes, but Hisui invites you to stray from the beaten path and make your own trailblazing journey of discovery.

According to reviewers at IGN, "Hisui feels like a fully realized wilderness" and Game Informer called the open world "a visual triumph that ignites the imagination." I couldn‘t agree more!

Innovative Catching and Crafting

Catching Pokémon also got a major overhaul. Instead of predictable random encounters, Pokémon dynamically roam the open landscapes. You can observe their behaviors before choosing to engage. Throwing Pokéballs during agile action sequences feels way more visceral than redundant turn-based battles.

I loved studying Pokémon attack patterns, stealthily sneaking up, and deploying tools like smoke bombs to tilt the odds in my favor before lets fly with a Pokéball in dramatic slow-motion. Landing those first-try excellent throws is so satisfying!

Crafting potions, Pokéballs, and handy tools from foraged materials adds another layer of tactical depth and preparation. According to PCGamer, "the crafting and open-approach to catching Pokémon make familiar activities like gathering ingredients and catching Pokémon feel fresh again."Couldn‘t have said it better myself!

Epic Alpha Pokémon Battles

Scouring the wilds, you may stumble upon extra large and aggressive Alpha Pokémon guarding their territory. These enemies hit hard and can wipe your team if you‘re not careful. Taking down these challenging foes requires proper strategy.

I loved scouting out an Alpha‘s location, noting its elemental weaknesses, sneaking up to initiate battle on my terms, then using crafted tools and well-trained Pokémon to counter its moves. Scoring those hard fought wins over powerful Alphas was hugely rewarding and way more memorable than routine Gym Badge victories.

GameSpot described the Alpha battles as "thrilling, tactical challenges" while IGN said they "force you to battle intelligently." If you want more strategy and difficulty from Pokémon combat, the Alphas deliver in spades!

Research Tasks Become Repetitive

Now, sticking to the main story missions, I do have to admit that the research tasks assigned by the Galaxy Expedition Team got repetitive. Too many boiled down to catching X number of certain Pokémon or observing the same basic behaviors.

I really wanted more variety to the research like challenging capture scenarios, battling tests, lore-based exploration, or clever puzzles. The story itself also wasn‘t as epic as I hoped. Arceus‘ tale felt underdeveloped compared to the excellent exploration gameplay. Missed opportunity for a truly legendary narrative!

However, the core gameplay loop remained highly addictive over my 30+ hours with the main story. The weak narrative just prevented it from being an all-time great RPG.

Post-Game and Multiplayer Limited

My main gripe is that there isn‘t much to do after the credits roll. You can finish leftover requests, hunt some rare spawns, or take on high-level Alphas. But there aren‘t new story beats, areas, or challenges unlocked. And you can‘t even bring a friend along for co-op monster hunting like in Monster Hunter.

Playing hide-and-seek with my friend’s Pokémon at the village was a cute touch, but I really wish I could explore the open world and battle trainers together. Missed opportunity by Game Freak to add cooperative play.

Critics Loved It, Fans Adore It

Despite the repetitive tasks and limited post-game and co-op, Pokémon Legends garnered tremendous acclaim, with an 84 critic average on Metacritic – matching franchise highs. Over 275 critic reviews praise the exhilarating new take on catching and exploring.

Fans seem even more thrilled, giving the game an 8.8 User Score on Metacritic. It sits as the #15 best reviewed Switch game of all time on Metacritic.

Here‘s a sampling of the critic and fan praise:

IGN "An incredibly fun evolution of the Pokémon formula"
Game Informer "The fresh and exciting journey I‘ve always wanted"
GameSpot "The jaw-dropping open world gave me renewed awe and wonder"
Fan review "The sheer joy of discovery and exploration made me feel like a kid again"
Fan review "Battle mechanics are finally strategic and challenging again thanks to the Alphas"

It Became the Hottest Pokémon Ever

The glowing critic reviews translated into red-hot sales. Pokémon Legends: Arceus sold 6.5 million copies worldwide in its first week – the fastest selling Pokémon title ever in Japan and second biggest global launch trailing only Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Legends: Arceus boasts the third highest-selling launch ever for a Nintendo Switch game, behind only Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros Ultimate – quite esteemed company!

The breakout commercial success shows that this innovative new direction resonated strongly with consumers. Game Freak took a risk that paid off in a big way!

Tailor-Made for Pokémon Veterans

While appealing to all audiences with its sense of adventure, Pokémon Legends: Arceus feels tailor-made for long-time Pokémon fans. It brings back that nostalgic spark of discovery from the original Game Boy games enhanced substantially.

As someone who grew up on Pokémon Red back in 1998, exploring Hisui gave me that same childlike awe of uncovering new monsters, filling up the Pokédex, and pushing into uncharted territory that I craved. Legends recaptured that magical feeling of amazement that first drew me into Pokémon!

Newcomers may enjoy it too, but veterans will especially appreciate Legends‘ faithful reimagining of the very best aspects of classic Pokémon.

Length Breakdown

Here‘s an estimate of how long it took me to complete key parts of the Hisui adventure:

  • Main Story: 25 hours
  • Optional Side Content: 6 hours (side missions, item collecting)
  • Completing Pokédex Goals: 10 hours
  • End-Game Content: 3 hours (final Alpha fights, Mysteries)

Focusing on just the critical path takes around 25 hours. But spending extra time on side missions, catchable Pokémon, and end-game activities can easily push your playtime to 40-50 hours. A massive adventure well worth the investment!

Absolutely Worth Full Price

While the repetitive tasks, barebones multiplayer, and limited post-game content prevent Legends: Arceus from being flawless, Game Freak absolutely succeeded at reinventing Pokémon for open-world adventures.

For any fellow Pokémon veteran eager to recapture that nostalgic spark of discovery from Red and Blue days, I couldn‘t recommend Legends: Arceus more as a day-one purchase at full price.

This breathtaking evolution of Pokémon delivered an experience I‘ve craved for over 20 years. I can‘t remember the last time roaming a new Pokémon region filled me with such awe, joy, and childlike wonder. Hisui is a world I‘m thrilled to get lost in, and I think you will be too, my friend!
