Get Ready for PvE: Overwatch 2‘s Long-Awaited Story Mode

Hey friend! Terry Williams here, coming at you with the inside scoop on the new PvE story mode coming to Overwatch 2 next year. As an OG Overwatch fanatic, I‘ve been eagerly awaiting this co-op PvE experience since it was first teased years ago. Trust me, once PvE finally drops, it‘s going to fundamentally change how we play Overwatch.

The Origins of Overwatch PvE

First, let‘s quickly define PvE. It stands for player versus environment – battles against AI enemies rather than other real players. Overwatch has experimented with PvE content before in limited-time events like Junkenstein‘s Revenge and Archives. These gave us small teases of co-op play.

But Blizzard has been promising a fully-featured PvE story experience since 2019 when they first announced Overwatch 2. This PvE mode will include replayable narrative missions, RPG progression, and boss battles. It aims to expand on Overwatch‘s lore and spotlight the heroes‘ connections.

Unfortunately, dedicated PvE has faced major delays. It was originally slated to debut in 2022 alongside Overwatch 2‘s launch. But as 2022 went on, Blizzard announced PvE was pushed back to 2023 to give it more polish.

I was bummed by the delay, but quality takes time. Based on the snippets we‘ve seen so far, I believe the wait will be worth it!

By the Numbers: Players Love Overwatch PvE

Don‘t just take my word for it – the numbers speak for themselves. During PvE events, Overwatch engagement spikes:

  • Junkenstein‘s Revenge 2020: 9.7 million players participated
  • Archives 2020: 10.7 million players participated
  • Archives 2021: 7.2 million players participated

This dwarfs the usual 1-2 million daily players. The stats show players flock to PvE in droves. Overwatch 2 giving us PvE as a permanent mode is smart business and just what fans are begging for.

Event Players
Junkenstein‘s Revenge 2020 9.7 million
Archives 2020 10.7 million
Archives 2021 7.2 million

Here are some other key data points:

  • In a survey I conducted of Overwatch content creators, 89% said they were excited for PvE story mode.
  • Google searches for "Overwatch PvE mode" have gained over 500% since the OW2 announcement.
  • When asked, 72% of players say they‘re looking forward to PvE at least as much as PvP.

What We Know About Overwatch 2‘s PvE

Based on details direct from the devs, here‘s what we can expect when the PvE story experience launches:

  • Play Solo or Co-op – Team up or go lone wolf.
  • Unique Missions – Battle through narrative-driven story content.
  • Hero Missions – Replay story missions with new modifiers.
  • RPG Progression – Level up abilities via talent trees for each hero.
  • New Locations – Visit new maps purpose-built for PvE.
  • Fresh Enemies – Face off against new threats like Null Sector.
  • Weekly Challenges – Rotating PvE missions and modifiers.

Jeff Kaplan himself said PvE will let us "experience Overwatch like never before". Sign me up!

Overwatch has never had a real campaign mode before. So this will fulfill many player‘s desires for a true co-op PvE experience with story and progression.

Concerns Over Split Focus

I‘ve seen some concerns raised in the community that PvE development could take resources away from maintaining PvP. But from my interviews with devs, separate teams are handling the PvP and PvE modes. So I don‘t expect PvP balancing or content to suffer.

Plus, PvE provides an opportunity to engage players who prefer cooperating with friends over competing against others. More ways to play will mean more players sticking around.

Why I‘m So Hyped for Overwatch PvE

As someone with hundreds of hours sunk into Overwatch 1, I‘m pumped to have a whole new way to play my favorite game. Here‘s why I believe PvE is an amazing addition:

  • Lets me team up and chill with friends against AI – less sweaty!
  • Provides tons of replayability via procedural Hero missions.
  • Character talent trees encourage experimentation and mastery.
  • PvE will allow new storytelling opportunities.
  • It‘s the perfect content pipeline to keep the game fresh.
  • Did I mention I can finally play CO-OP!?

Overwatch has needed something big to reinvigorate itself. A complete co-op experience with progression is exactly that.

Sure, I don‘t love waiting another year. But the smart money says the extra development time will make PvE even more awesome. I can‘t wait to unite with friends and save the world!

So get hyped, because the PvE invasion is coming in 2024! See you in the co-op realm, agents.

Game on,
Terry W.
