Is Skyrim a hard game to play?

While Skyrim has some punishingly hard parts, its default difficulty level provides a reasonably tough but fun challenge that most gamers can handle with sound tactics. By leveraging the flexibility of its skills and gear, even newcomers to RPGs can find success in this immersive adventure.

Careful Build Planning is Key in the Early Game

When just starting Skyrim, you’ll be weak and underequipped. Many new players struggle in the opening sections around Helgen and Riverwood. But by focusing your initial skill point investments in key combat skills rather than non-essentials, you can get a leg up on early foes.

For warriors, pumps points into One-Handed, Heavy Armor, Block and Smithing first. As a mage, prioritize Destruction, Conjuration, Restoration and Enchanting. This focused approach will pay dividends against challenging enemies like Frost Trolls guarding High Hrothgar.

Pick the Right Race and Stone for Your Build

Further optimize your build by selecting a race with bonuses that complement your playstyle. A High Elf’s extra magicka fuels powerful spellcasting early on. An Orc’s berserker rage confers a major damage boost in tough battles. The Warrior Stone‘s combat bonuses help fledgling fighters survive lethal blows.

Crafting and Alchemy Are Essential for Endgame Viability

While crafting skills seem mundane at first glance, they become essential to survival at higher difficulties. A set of custom enchanted Daedric or Dragonplate armor forged by a maxed out smith can literally quadruple your damage mitigation versus basic steel gear.

Likewise, a well-stocked alchemist has access to potions that massively amplify damage output or negate enemy attacks. Don‘t wait until the late game to level these!

Some Sample Damage Benchmarks at Varying Levels

Level 10 100 DPS
Level 20 250 DPS
Level 30 700 DPS
Level 40 1200 DPS
Level 60 2500+ DPS

As you can see, an optimized endgame build is literally over 10X as powerful as a starting character!

Save Often – Retrying Tough Battles is Key

Skyrim can throw sudden death at you – whether it’s a lethal archer ambush or an unexpected giant’s club one-shotting you from full health. Don’t be ashamed to reload! Study each situation and use trial-and-error to master the encounter. Quicksave frequently in dangerous dungeons.

Exploit Enemy Weaknesses for an Edge

Many challenging foes have inherent weaknesses you can leverage: trolls are vulnerable to fire, dwemer automatons to electricity, dragons to Dragonrend shouts. A tactics-minded Dragonborn enchants their weapons appropriately or prepares the right spells. Why brute force a tough fight when you can tilt the odds?

Summoning is a Newbie’s Best Friend

When first exploring dangerous dungeons, let summoned creatures draw enemy aggression. Focus on leveling conjuration early and acquire the Summon Dremora Lord spell as soon as possible. Two high-level dremora can kill most bosses for you while you stay safely out of harm’s way.

Stealth Archers Trivialize Most Threats

While challenging at first, stealth archery becomes extremely powerful with investment. A high Sneak, Archery and One-Handed build can one-shot most enemies from the shadows. This removes much of the tension, so avoid if seeking a playthrough with engaging combat.

Great Gear Makes You Nearly Invincible

Once you acquire daedric/dragon gear and maximize smithing and enchanting, standard enemies pose little threat unless you intentionally limit upgrades. But be prepared to still get one-shot by high level enemies if you neglect health and resistances!

Enemy Damage vs Player Health by Difficulty

Difficulty Enemy Damage Modifier Player Health Modifier
Novice 25% 300%
Apprentice 75% 200%
Adept 100% 100%
Expert 150% 75%
Master 200% 50%
Legendary 300% 25%

Magic is Extremely Powerful in the Right Hands

Magic builds require careful management of Magicka and smart tactics, but master wizards can annihilate most foes with the right focus. High level Destruction spells, buffed with Fortify Magicka enchants and potions, let you evaporate enemies from a distance.

Ensuring You Have Fun is What Matters Most

At the end of the day, Skyrim is here to provide an enjoyable adventure. Don’t be afraid to adjust the difficulty slider, enable god mode or install mods if facing roadblocks to your enjoyment. The flexibility is there to cater to all players and skill levels.

With the right mindset, build, gear and approach to combat, you can handle anything Skyrim throws at you. Learn from each death, stick to your roleplaying strengths, and you‘ll prevail against any foe! Let me know if you have any other Skyrim combat questions!
