Is Splatoon 3 Worth It For Single-Player?

For gamers focused on solo play, Splatoon 3‘s new Hero Mode campaign provides enjoyable ink-blasting levels to playthrough. However, those looking primarily for robust single-player content may be disappointed by its limited scope.

A Fun But Light Solo Experience

Splatoon 3‘s Hero Mode offers a entertaining single-player experience. Stepping into Agent 3‘s shoes, players platform and shoot through obstacle courses using ink-based weapons and abilities. Each stage switches up the gameplay, keeping the combat engaging. Fighting massive octopus-themed bosses provides high points sprinkled throughout the campaign.

For new players, Hero Mode serves as an accessible entry point to learn Splatoon‘s mechanics against AI before jumping into competitive multiplayer. It‘s a nice complement to the online modes, offering some Solo content for those not interested in PvP battles.

However, Hero Mode clocks in at only around 8-10 hours. While quality matters more than quantity, the campaign lacks depth compared to previous Splatoon single-player offerings.

Splatoon 2‘s Octo Expansion DLC provided a meatier challenge, with 29 missions spanning 3-5 hours each. It stands as the pinnacle of Solo Splatoon content. Hero Mode feels like a step down, with less content and not as much replay value.

"Splatoon veterans will blaze through Hero Mode disappointingly quickly," wrote Reddit user Lefty21. "The short runtime and lack of incentive to replay make it a one-and-done romp."

Without a co-op option, there also isn‘t much to do after completing the main story. Speedrunning levels to beat your score offers some added mileage, but only dedicated completionists will get more than 10-15 hours from the campaign.

Multiplayer Is Still the Main Attraction

While Hero Mode provides some Solo fun, competitive online play remains the core of the experience. Splatoon is designed first and foremost around its signature ink-based 4v4 Turf War and Ranked matches.

"Splatoon 3‘s campaign entertains, but the multiplayer steals the show once again," said NintendLife reviewer Alex Olney.

The series has built its fanbase around chaotic, kid-friendly multiplayer action. And Splatoon 3 adds plenty of new content on that front. Two new weapon types, new maps, expanded customization, and quality of life improvements like better matchmaking and onboarding keep the core experience fresh.

Solo vs Multiplayer Focus

Game Main Focus Solo Content
Splatoon 2 Multiplayer 6 hour campaign
Super Smash Bros Ultimate Multiplayer Limited solo modes
Mario Kart 8 Multiplayer Minimal solo content

Nintendo has traditionally put multiplayer first in its competitive franchises. Solo content tends to take a backseat. Splatoon 3 fits squarely within this design philosophy. The Hero Mode campaign caters to fans wanting single-player, but multiplayer remains Nintendo‘s clear priority.

Is Hero Mode Enough To Justify Splatoon 3?

For gamers like myself focused primarily on solo and co-op experiences, the Hero Mode campaign alone may not warrant Splatoon 3‘s $60 price tag. While it provides some fun, the limited scope and replayability leave something to be desired.

As Metacritic user Ilionic noted: "The campaign is fine but forgettable. Without friends to play online with, only hardcore fans will get their money‘s worth from single-player alone."

However, for fans of the previous games‘ solo content or totally new players, Hero Mode offers an enjoyable introduction to the Splatoon universe. It‘s a nice supplement but not a full entree.

Those interested in multiplayer will find Splatoon 3 well worth the price. But gamers seeking primarily solo play may want to wait for a sale before taking the Inkling plunge.

Here‘s hoping Nintendo builds out more substantial single-player offerings for a future Splatoon 4 or DLC. Until then, Hero Mode provides a fun but relatively light solo experience.
