Yes, the Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass is Absolutely Worth It for Fans

As an avid Pokémon expert and fan, I highly recommend picking up the Expansion Pass DLC for Pokémon Sword. For $29.99, the Pass adds over 30 hours of content and 200+ new Pokémon to catch across two huge new regions. If you love exploring, catching, and battling, it‘s easy to get your money‘s worth.

Diving Deep into the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLCs

The Expansion Pass contains two major DLC adventures – The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. Let‘s break down everything both expansions add to the base Sword/Shield games:

The Isle of Armor

This large island area introduces tons of new features:

  • Over 100 Returning and New Catchable Pokémon – Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Galarian Slowbro, Skrelp, Sandile, and many more!

  • Fun New Story Content – Rebuild the island Dojo, take on the Isle Challenge Trials, and train under Mustard and his disciples. About 10 hours of story.

  • New Legendaries – Mythical Kubfu evolves into Urshifu, with unique Fighting and Water styles.

  • Gigantamax Forms – For starter evolutions Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Intelleon.

  • Useful New Items – Cook items, TMs, ingredients, and useful held items like Assault Vest.

  • The Cram-o-Matic – Recycle items into new Poke Balls or other goods.

  • Towers of Two Fists – Challenge the Fighting-type or Water-type tower connected to story events.

  • Max Soup – Change a Pokemon‘s ability and allow it to Gigantamax!

  • New Moves – Meteor Beam, Scale Shot, Coaching, Corrosive Gas, Scorching Sands.

  • New Ability – As One, Kubfu and Urshifu‘s special ability.

After becoming Champion, I spent around 25 hours completing the Isle of Armor story, challenges, and catching most of the new Pokémon.

The Crown Tundra

This frigid, mountainous area offers tons to discover:

  • Over 100 Returning and New Catchable Pokémon – Mudkip, Aerodactyl, Galarian Articuno, Registeel, and many more legendaries!

  • Exciting New Story Content – Uncover the legends of Calyrex and Dynamax mythics. Around 15 hours of story.

  • Powerful New Legendaries – Calyrex, Galarian Moltres, Regirock, and more. A legendary bonanza!

  • Dynamax Adventure – A new challenging co-op mode taking on Dynamax Pokémon.

  • Galarian Star Tournament – Team up with a leader for competitive battles in a tournament.

  • Three New Regis – Regieleki, Regidrago, and Regigigas.

  • Legendary Clue Hunt – Find footprint clues to encounter roaming legendaries.

  • New Items – Rare Poke Balls, foods, fossils, evolution stones, ingredients.

  • Regional Forms – Uncover Galarian versions of the legendary birds.

After becoming Champion, I spent around 30 hours on the Crown Tundra story, post-game quests, and catching most Pokémon.

Analyzing the Value: Is the Expansion Pass Worth It?

Let‘s break down the value across some key factors:

Isle of Armor: ~10 hours of story, ~15 hours for post-game

Crown Tundra: ~15 hours of story, ~20 hours for post-game

Total: 60+ hours of gameplay

New Catchable Pokemon

Isle of Armor: ~100 new and returning Pokémon

Crown Tundra: ~100 new and returning Pokémon

Total: ~200 new Pokemon

New Story Content

Isle of Armor: 7 new rival battles, rebuilding the dojo, Island Challenge Trials

Crown Tundra: Calyrex and Peony questlines, Dynamax Adventures, Legendary Clue Hunts

Total: 25+ hours of new stories and quests

New Features

Cram-o-matic, Max Soup, Restricted Sparring, Dynamax Adventure, Galarian Star Tournament, Footprint Hunts, and more!

Post-Game Content

Catching, training, Dynamax and Max Raid battles, competitive breeding, completing the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra Pokedexes. Easily 40+ hours of endgame activities.

New Areas to Explore

The Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra offer diverse and interesting areas to journey through and uncover secrets. They feel completely fresh.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

Move Tutors, new items, Ability Patch, Pokémon homes, rental teams, Apriballs, and more. Lots of nice tweaks and additions.

Looking at everything the Expansion Pass offers, I think the $29.99 price tag is more than fair. You get two enormous new regions, over 60 hours of content, and 200+ new Pokémon to catch. That‘s the cost of a single new game like Kirby and the Forgotten Land, but with nearly triple the content!

For dedicated Pokémon fans, collectors, and competitive trainers, the Expansion Pass is an easy recommend. Casual players may want to wait for a sale, but the value is certainly there.

Comparing the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra

Both DLCs are meaty expansions, but overall I found Crown Tundra to be the better experience for a few reasons:

  • Crown Tundra‘s story, legendary hunts, and characters were more interesting
  • It offers more legendary Pokémon and returning favorites to catch
  • The new Dynamax Adventure co-op mode is awesome
  • Crown Tundra‘s map feels more diverse and engaging to explore
  • Challenging Peony, his daughter Peonia, and the new rivals is enjoyable

However, Isle of Armor has some high points too:

  • Isle of Armor introduces key new features like the Cram-o-matic
  • It‘s a more compact, focused experience
  • Rebuilding the dojo provides some entertaining challenges
  • Kubfu and Urshifu are very unique and powerful new Pokémon

So while Crown Tundra comes out on top in my view, Isle of Armor is still a very strong expansion. They complement each other nicely.

My Final Verdict as a Pokémon Expert

As someone who has completed the national Pokédex and trained competitive teams since the 1990s, I highly recommend the Expansion Pass. The value is off the charts, with 60+ hours of content, huge new regions, 200+ new Pokémon, and fun co-op modes.

Crown Tundra is slightly better, but Isle of Armor is great too. If you love exploring, catching, and battling, the Expansion Pass is a must-buy. It‘s some of the most fun I‘ve had with Pokémon in years!

Even for more casual players, I think the DLC is worth it when on sale. You get delightful new stories, challenging quests, and there are quality-of-life improvements that enhance the entire experience.

In summary, the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass gets an enthusiastic seal of approval from this long-time Pokémon expert and fan. I can‘t wait to see where Game Freak takes the series next!
