The Complete Guide to Entering the London Marathon Ballot

Hey there! If you‘re hoping to participate in the world-famous London Marathon, I‘m here to walk you through everything you need to know about getting in through the ballot system. With nearly half a million runners applying every year for around 40,000 spots, securing an entry is no easy feat. But this comprehensive guide will break down the odds, important dates, registration process, and best practices to set you up for success on marathon day.

Let‘s dig in!

Demystifying the Ballot – Your Actual Odds of Getting In

As an avid runner who has trained for and completed five marathons, I know first-hand the thrill of crossing the finish line after months of preparation. The London Marathon has always been on my bucket list, but I‘m yet to make it through the infamously competitive ballot system.

Just how tight are the odds? In 2022, a record-breaking 414,168 runners applied through the ballot alone, all vying for around 38,000 spots. That‘s an acceptance rate of just 9%!

The number of applicants seems to increase every year too. For comparison, in 2019 there were 386,050 ballot applicants according to London Marathon results, so the pool continues to grow.

The ballot uses computerized random selection to pick runners, so in theory anyone who enters during the registration period has an equal chance of getting in. Easier said than done though! You may need to submit ballot applications for a few years before luck is on your side.

Checking Your Status – How to Know if You Got In

Nothing beats the rush of finding out you‘ve secured an entry through the ballot! In my experience training for marathons, one of the most exciting days is when you get that confirmation that the grueling months of preparation will culminate in the race you‘ve dreamed about.

Here‘s a step-by-step guide on how you can check your London Marathon ballot status:

1. Check Your Email

Keep a close eye on your inbox! All applicants will receive an email from the official London Marathon address letting them know if they have been accepted or not.

I remember screaming with joy at work when I got the news I was selected for the Berlin Marathon ballot – my colleagues must have thought I‘d won the lottery!

2. Log Into Your London Marathon Account

If you don‘t see an email, log into the account you created when submitting your ballot application. Under the "My Entry" section, it should show your application status.

If you see the magical words "Congratulations, you have been accepted", get ready to start planning for marathon glory! Don‘t worry if you see "Sorry, you have been unsuccessful" – there‘s always next year.

3. Contact Customer Service

Still unsure of your status after checking email and your account? Reach out to the helpful London Marathon customer service team by phone or email. Provide your personal details and they can look up your application results directly.

I know the waiting period can be agonizing, but soon enough you‘ll know whether you have a coveted spot lined up!

Just How Many Ballot Spots Are Up For Grabs?

As one of the six World Marathon Majors, the London Marathon welcomes around 40,000 runners each year. The majority of these places – we‘re talking 97% – are allocated through the ballot system.

For 2022, there were roughly 38,000 ballot spots available. To put into perspective just how rare those entries are, that‘s less than 10% of the over 400,000 people that applied through the ballot!

This massive pool of applicants coupled with the extremely limited supply of entries is precisely what makes securing a London Marathon place through the ballot so remarkably tough. But it also makes crossing that finish line on the iconic London course all the more rewarding.

Key Dates – When You‘ll Hear If You‘re In

As an avid runner, I‘m sure you‘re already aware of the importance of diligent preparation. Similarly, when trying to get into the London Marathon, you need to carefully track key dates and deadlines.

Here‘s an overview of when ballot registration opens and results are announced each year:

  • April – Online ballot registrations open for the marathon taking place the following year

  • Early October – Window closes for ballot applications

  • Mid October – Initial round of random selection happens and first wave of results are sent

  • November – Any remaining spots from the first ballot are allocated via a second round

  • December – Final ballot conducted for last remaining places if needed

  • Early January – Absolute final ballot results confirmed and shared

Once you get word that you‘re one of the lucky ballot winners, it‘s time to kick your marathon prep into high gear! Patience and persistence are key – don‘t get discouraged if you aren‘t successful the first time. With any luck, I‘ll be seeing you on the starters line soon!

Locating Your Booking Number

Once you get that long-awaited confirmation, you‘ll be assigned a booking number unique to your entry. This is an important reference code, so make sure you know where to find it:

  • Check the "My Entry" section of your London Marathon account

  • Locate it in the registration confirmation email you received

  • Contact customer service if you‘re still unsure – they can provide it

Note down your booking number or take a screenshot of it on your phone. You‘ll need to have it handy to reference when contacting the organizers about any entry details.

Trust me, with the flurry of preparation that comes with marathon training, it‘s easy to misplace information! I once showed up to a race expo without my booking number and had a minor panic attack. Save yourself the stress by keeping it safely stored.

Charity Entries – Another Path to Marathon Glory

If the ballot doesn‘t work out in your favor, acquiring one of the approximately 5,000 charity entry spots is another potential route to participation. This involves fundraising for a chosen charity in exchange for a secured London Marathon entry.

With over 400 partner charities participating, there‘s no shortage of great causes to support. Based on your interests and values, research different organizations to find one that truly resonates with you.

Then come up with a rock-solid fundraising plan – how will you aim to raise funds? What is a realistic goal to commit to? Share your motivations passionately! Many charities receive way more applications than they have bib numbers for, so you need to stand out.

It may take applying to multiple charities before succeeding, but don‘t get discouraged! There are so many inspiring people supporting hundreds of charities at the London Marathon each year. With some luck and hard work fundraising, you can be one of them.

8 Essential Tips for Marathon Glory On Race Day

You did it – you battled the nearly impossible lottery odds and are going to take part in the upcoming London Marathon! Now comes the fun (and challenging) part: preparing for the big day.

As a five-time marathoner, I‘ve picked up some hard-earned wisdom on how to make the most of marathon race day. Here are my top eight tips:

1. Carbo-Load the Night Before

Having ample glycogen stores in your muscles is key to powering you through 26.2 miles. Be sure to carbo-load with a big, balanced dinner the night before. I recommend pasta, rice, sweet potatoes and other complex carbs. Stay hydrated too!

2. Get Plenty of Rest

It‘s crucial to be well-rested before a marathon. I aim for at least 8 hours of sleep the two nights prior. Don‘t try anything new – stick to your usual pre-race routine and sleep rituals.

3. Arrive Early

Make sure to arrive at the start area 60-90 minutes before race kick-off. You‘ll need time to check gear, warm up, get in the zone and of course, take some selfies!

4. Start Slow

It‘s easy to get swept up in the adrenaline at the start and bolt off too fast. Stick to your planned pace, especially in the first half. You‘ll thank yourself later! I like to take the first mile nice and easy.

5. Hydrate Regularly

Drink up at every water station – staying hydrated is so important. I also recommend fueling with an energy gel around 10 miles in to power you through.

6. Soak up the Atmosphere

The unbelievable energy of the crowds lining London‘s streets is part of what makes marathon day magical. High-five as many happy spectators as you can and enjoy the experience!

7. Thank Volunteers

Don‘t forget to share some appreciation for the incredible volunteers manning water stops and keeping runners fueled. Their support means the world!

8. Have the Time of Your Life

Most importantly, take a moment to be present and make the most of achieving something amazing. You earned this – feel every exhilarating step!

The Finish Line Awaits!

There you have it – a complete guide to conquering the ballot and preparing for London Marathon greatness. Follow these tips and soon you‘ll experience the ultimate runners‘ high as you cross the iconic finish line in front of Buckingham Palace.
