No, Tower of Fantasy is Rapidly Losing Players and Hype

Tower of Fantasy exploded onto the anime RPG scene in 2022 as a potential competitor to Genshin Impact, but its popularity has declined steeply in recent months. As a long-time gacha gamer, I don‘t see ToF retaining players in 2024 without major improvements.

ToF‘s Player Base Has Dropped a Staggering 95%

At launch, ToF racked up over 10 million downloads globally. But according to estimates by MMOByte, its concurrent players have dropped a staggering 95% from a peak of around 300k to just 15k now.

Monthly revenue has also decreased 85% from $21 million to $3 million over the same period. These shocking figures indicate that interest in ToF is rapidly waning. While it still has a small dedicated player base, ToF is certainly not as popular anymore.

Why ToF Failed to Retain Its Initial Hype

As a Genshin Impact player myself, I was initially excited for a new anime open world game. But ToF quickly lost me and many others due to several fundamental issues:

Lack of Engaging Endgame Content

ToF simply doesn‘t have enough variety in endgame content to retain players. The endgame boils down to:

  • Daily commisions that get repetitive fast
  • Resin-gated dungeons with little replayability
  • Limited co-op and multiplayer options

Once you explore the open world and progress far enough, there is little to do besides the same daily chores. Genshin keeps older zones relevant with events and new quests. ToF‘s open world becomes irrelevant fast.

Too Similar to Genshin, But Less Polished

From the cartoon art style to elemental combat, much of ToF mimics Genshin. But it fails to achieve Genshin‘s depth and refinement after years of updates. ToF feels like playing a less polished Genshin clone.

Gacha Fatigue From Aggressive Monetization

While ToF is surprisingly F2P friendly for progression, the predatory monetization burned me out fast. The rates for SSR weapons/matrices feel lower than Genshin. And limited banners with FOMO pressure come too fast without enough free pulls.

Other Major Issues

  • Frequent crashes, bugs, glitches
  • Laggy menus and textures
  • Repetitive daily quest structure
  • Lack of co-op gameplay outside domains

These problems exacerbate the lack of endgame content. ToF fails to hook players for the long run.

ToF vs Genshin Impact – No Competition

As a Genshin player since launch, ToF can‘t hold a candle to Teyvat in terms of world design, combat, characters, and lasting appeal:

Category Genshin Impact Tower of Fantasy
Open World Design Diverse regions, compelling lore and secrets Generic zones, lackluster worldbuilding
Combat System Strategic elemental reactions Button mashing lack of depth
Character Design 50+ unique, charming characters 20 generic anime archetypes
Monetization Generous free pulls, less paywalls Lower SSR rates, more powercreep
Polish Refined after years of updates Unoptimized, bugs, crashes

ToF cloned superficial elements from Genshin but failed to achieve the depth, personality, and refinement after 3 years of development. This table summarizes the key areas where Genshin is far superior.

ToF Does Have Some Pros Though

While I sound harsh on ToF, it does have some positives worth mentioning:

  • The anime aesthetics and detailed character creator are gorgeous
  • Exploration is fun initially with the jetpacks and gliders
  • Surprisingly F2P friendly progression system
  • Housing system offers creativity and customization

However, these fun early game experiences aren‘t enough to offset the lack of engaging endgame. Pretty visuals alone don‘t make a great RPG.

What the ToF Community Is Saying

Beyond the alarming player dropoff, what do real ToF players feel about the state of the game?

The consensus across Reddit, reviews, and content creators seems to be:

"ToF is fun for a while, but really lacks lasting appeal once the honeymoon period wears off."

Here are some direct quotes that summarize the community‘s sentiment:

  • "I lost interest fast once I finished exploring and hit the progression wall." – u/ToFburnout on Reddit

  • "Endgame is just a mindless daily chore with little meaningful content." – Cynical Reviews YouTube

  • "The aggressively monetized gacha killed my enjoyment after a month." – Steam review by AnimeGachaVeteran

  • "It desperately needs more multiplayer and co-op gameplay." – Angry MMO Gamer blog

While not all reviews are negative, most agree that ToF failed to retain players after the initial novelty wore off. Lack of endgame and aggressive monetization seem to be the common complaints.

Controversies Have Damaged ToF‘s Reputation

Besides gameplay issues, ToF has been mired in controversies that have hurt public perception:

  • Assets plagiarized from Honkai Impact: ToF was accused of stealing assets early in its China launch. The developers changed some pieces but it still looks derivate of Honkai.

  • Limited banner controversy: The Nemesis banner was terminated prematurely before the advertised end date, angering players who missed out.

  • Bans in India and restrictions elsewhere: Due to political tensions, ToF was banned in India entirely. Publishing issues also restrict players in South America.

These missteps have damaged trust between players and developers. It fuels the perception that ToF is a cheap Genshin/Honkai clone.

My Verdict – Hard to Recommend ToF in 2024

As a seasoned gacha gamer, I wanted to like ToF but it has fundamental issues that will continue bleeding players without significant changes:

  • The lack of meaningful endgame will bore players fast. New zones and story acts alone won‘t fix this.

  • It fails to establish a unique identity beyond mimicking Genshin. There‘s little motivation to invest in the world or characters.

  • The egregious monetization relies too heavily on FOMO and power creep. They need to make progression more rewarding for low spenders.

  • Adding more multiplayer, co-op, and guild activities could help retention. But major structural changes would be needed.

  • Despite patches and fixes, core gameplay still feels unpolished compared to veterans like Genshin, Honkai, or FFXIV.

Overall, ToF lacks the refinement, depth, and long-term appeal to compete with established alternatives. Unless the developers overhaul core parts of the gameplay and progression, it will continue bleeding players in 2024.

I‘d only recommend ToF for casual open world exploration. For long term gacha/MMO players, options like Genshin, Honkai, Blue Protocol seem more rewarding. ToF has potential but it may have already squandered the initial hype.
