Is Walmart a Fortune 500 Company in 2026?

If you’ve shopped at those familiar supercenters with the bright blue Walmart sign, you’ve experienced the #1 company on the Fortune 500. This retail giant has topped the list ranking America’s largest companies for years.

So how did Walmart grow into the powerhouse it is today? When did it first make the Fortune 500 list? And what are its prospects for remaining at the top in the future?

I’ll answer all these questions and more below! Just like visiting my local Walmart, you can think of this article as your helpful guide to navigating Walmart’s past, present and future in relation to the prestigious Fortune 500.

The Short Answer: Yes, Walmart is Still #1

Walmart first debuted on the Fortune 500 in 1995 and has stayed in the top 5 ever since. After taking the #1 spot in 2002, Walmart has remained the largest company on the Fortune 500 for most of the last 20 years despite some fluctuations.

In 2023, Walmart is projected to once again rank #1 with over $500 billion in revenue. But competitor Amazon continues to close in on the top position.

Walmart‘s 25+ Year Climb Up the Fortune 500

While Walmart is a staple today, its rise to retail giant all started with a single store in 1962. Here’s a brief look at Walmart’s Fortune 500 history since joining the list in 1995:

Year Fortune 500 Rank Annual Revenue # of Stores
1995 #4 $93.6 billion 2,258
2000 #2 $165 billion 4,000
2005 #1 $312.4 billion 5,289
2010 #1 $408.2 billion 8,416
2015 #1 $482.1 billion 11,527
2020 #1 $524 billion 11,500

Some key takeaways:

  • Starting in the mid-90s, Walmart experienced rapid growth, allowing it to climb the Fortune 500 ranks.

  • Hitting the #2 spot in 2000 reflected Walmart successfully expanding beyond its rural, American roots.

  • Securing the #1 position in the early 2000s coincided with ramping up international stores.

  • Double-digit revenue growth even during recessions cemented Walmart‘s position.

  • In recent years, Walmart‘s revenue exceeds a staggering $500 billion annually.

So in just 25 years on the list, Walmart has transformed from regional chain to global retail leader. An impressive rise!

How Does the Fortune 500 Work?

Published yearly by Fortune magazine, the well-known Fortune 500 ranks the top US companies by total revenues. Both publicly traded and private companies are considered, as long as they report revenue figures.

Some other key facts on how the list is compiled:

  • It provides a snapshot of the previous fiscal year‘s revenues. The 2023 list will reflect 2022 results.

  • Companies are arranged from highest revenues to lowest. #1 is awarded the largest company.

  • Industries with high revenues like retail and energy tend to dominate the upper ranks.

  • Making the Fortune 500 is considered a sign of a successful, financially sound business.

  • Winning the #1 spot is a major achievement and recognition of being an industry leader.

Walmart‘s Current Fortune 500 Status

Sitting at over 10,500 stores worldwide and employing 2.3 million associates, Walmart continues as the world’s largest company by revenue.

For 2021, Walmart reported a whopping $573 billion in total revenues. This allowed it to easily keep the #1 spot on the Fortune 500 with over $100 billion in revenues above the next competitor.

Barring any major changes in 2022, analysts widely expect Walmart to retain its #1 ranking on the upcoming 2023 Fortune 500 list. Its main rivals like Amazon and CVS Health still lag behind in total retail revenues.

What Does Being the Largest Company Mean?

While being #1 on the Fortune 500 is an impressive achievement, what does being the "largest" really reflect about a company like Walmart? Here are some key factors that come with this status:

Market Dominance – The scale of its operations shows Walmart‘s dominance across many retail sectors like groceries, clothing, home goods and more. Its supercenters truly offer one-stop shopping.

Global Presence – With well over 10,000 stores spanning 24 countries, Walmart has proven it can successfully expand its brand worldwide.

Innovation – Walmart has had to innovate, acquiring ecommerce companies like Jet.com to compete with the rise in online shopping. Investing in new technologies also keeps it ahead.

Resilience – The ability to retain high revenues even during recessions shows Walmart can adapt to economic shifts and customer needs.

Efficient Operations – To sustain low prices, Walmart has had to pioneer inventory and supply chain management to control costs. This operational efficiency contributes to its financial success.

Customer Reliability – With over 140 million weekly customers, Walmart has gained strong shopper loyalty across many demographics seeking value and convenience.

Challenges to Walmart‘s Future Fortune 500 Standing

Despite its current #1 status, Walmart does face some risks and shifts that could threaten its ranking in the coming years:

More Online Shopping – As consumers buy more online, Amazon‘s ecommerce model poses a serious threat. Amazon‘s revenues have grown 27% annually over the last five years.

Targeted Competitors – Retailers like Dollar General target the value shoppers in rural areas that have been a key Walmart demographic.

Labor Relations – Walmart has faced pressure to increase wages as part of its reputation as an employer. Higher labor costs could impact its profit margins.

Overseas Slowdown – While growing strongly in countries like Mexico and China, Walmart has struggled to gain share in others like the UK and Brazil.

Increased Automation – Walmart has pledged to spend more on new technologies to improve efficiency. But this could potentially displace many in-store associates.

Brand Perception Issues – Some shoppers see Walmart as outdated or associate it with negative connotations of big box retail, making them choose other grocers.

Despite these headwinds, Walmart’s sheer size and adaptability makes it unlikely to drop from the ranks of the Fortune 500 anytime soon. But competitors, especially Amazon, do threaten its position at the very top in the coming decade.

The Outlook for Walmart on the Fortune 500

Given its long stay at #1, could Walmart ever fall from the top of the Fortune 500? Business analysts think a change could happen within 2-5 years:

“Amazon has shown no signs of slowing its blistering growth," says Mark Cohen, Director of Retail Studies at Columbia University. “Capturing the online shopper has allowed Amazon to post the strong revenue gains needed to overtake Walmart. While Walmart has its own digital assets, Amazon’s more specialized ecommerce model seems primed to claim the top Fortune 500 ranking.”

However, Walmart’s scale still gives it advantages that will make toppling it challenging, thinks Barbara Kahn, Professor of Marketing at Wharton: “Walmart’s massive physical footprint allows it to integrate online pickup and leverage stores for shipping. By blurring the lines between physical and digital, Walmart can stave off Amazon, especially for grocery shopping where customers still prefer stores.”

While the #1 spot could change hands, Walmart’s place among the elite Fortune 500 companies seems assured for the foreseeable future. Its brand and global footprint in retail took decades to build, providing resiliency even in an evolving commerce landscape. For shoppers, having two retail giants battling for supremacy could ultimately benefit consumers.

So while we don’t know exactly when, the identity of the Fortune 500’s top company will likely transition in the 2020s from a big box retailer rising in rural America to an online behemoth born in Seattle. When this happens, it will close one chapter of retail history and begin another.
