Is Warzone Caldera Worth Playing in 2026? Yes, With Some Caveats.
For casual Call of Duty fans who don‘t mind some flaws, Caldera is still enjoyable in 2022. But competitive players may want to move on to Warzone 2‘s map. Let‘s dive deeper into the current state of Caldera.
Caldera‘s Highs and Lows: A Mixed Bag for Map Design
With its lush jungles and tropical vibes, Caldera breathed fresh life into Warzone when it replaced Verdansk in December 2021. The Pacific theme succeeds in differentiating itself from Verdansk‘s drab cityscape. Vibrant foliage and varied terrain across Caldera‘s islands provide more diversity in landscapes to fight across.
Yet in terms of memorable destinations and engaging gunfights, Caldera leaves much to be desired. As a competitive player myself, I find only Peak and Mines offer unique tactical play. Most other POIs blur together, lacking character. The excessive foliage also negatively impacts combat by obscuring sightlines.
According to analytics site WZRanked, over 50% of gunfights occur around Peak and Mines. This suggests the rest of Caldera‘s POIs fail to attract players, a flaw in map design.
Community Preferences: Slight Edge to Caldera
Surprisingly, Caldera has largely won over the community despite its shortcomings. In a poll of over 70,000 players run by CoD leaker Tom Henderson, 57.9% preferred Caldera vs just 42.1% for Verdansk.
After playing over 200 hours myself, I agree with the majority preferring Caldera. The green landscapes are less depressing than Verdansk‘s dreary urban terrain. Avoiding downtown campfests is also a plus. While Caldera could use more memorable POIs, the mixed reception shows it resonates with many players.
The Games Taking Warzone Players: Apex & Warzone 2
Warzone‘s player base has dropped from over 100 million players to around 50 million per month according to ActivePlayer.io. What games are enticing players away?
Based on search volume and player population trackers, Apex Legends and Warzone 2 appear to be the main culprits. Apex provides a faster-paced, hero-based spin on battle royale. Warzone 2 offers updated mechanics and a brand new map.
But Caldera continues to maintain a healthy population of around 250,000 daily players. This suggests while competitors are making a dent, millions still enjoy the original Warzone.
Competitive Meta: Vastly Improved, but Snipers Still Supreme
The meta on Caldera has improved following various balancing patches. Data from WZRanked shows the Bren, MP40, and STG44 no longer dominate pick rates. Alternatives like the Cooper Carbine, Armaguerra 43, and BAR have entered the mix.
Snipers however rule supreme. The Kar98k and 3-Line Rifle combine for over 50% usage in many matches. This can lead to slow, campy gameplay. On the bright side, the Swiss K31, RATT, and other rapid fire snipers promote more aggressive styles.
What Does the Future Hold for Caldera?
No plans to remove Caldera have been announced. It seems set as the classic Warzone map for the indefinite future. Players can likely expect more new POIs, limited-time events, and quality of life tweaks.
But major innovation will happen in Warzone 2. The freshly launched Al Mazrah map is Activision‘s focus moving forward. Caldera will only receive basic support and maintenance rather than huge investments.
My Verdict: Still Worth Playing If You Enjoy WWII Theme
As someone with hundreds of hours in Caldera, I believe it still provides fun battle royale gameplay in 2022 if you enjoy the WWII aesthetic. For casual matches, the map‘s environments work great and I appreciate the more lighthearted tone compared to Verdansk.
However, the lack of varied, engaging POIs hurts replayability for competitive players. And Caldera will only fall further behind as Warzone 2 raises innovation.
So in summary, I recommend casual players who aren‘t burnt out on Caldera‘s scenery stay and enjoy the core gunplay. Competitive types seeking more map strategy may want to transition to Warzone 2‘s Al Mazrah instead. There you‘ll find fresh innovations to the Warzone formula.
Either way, Caldera isn‘t going anywhere. Players are free to drop in whenever the tropical vibes call their name. See you in the jungles!
