Is World of Warcraft Worth Playing in 2026? Absolutely Yes.

As an avid WoW player for over 10 years, I can definitively say that World of Warcraft remains incredibly worth playing in 2024 and beyond. With new expansions, constant content updates, and a thriving community, WoW continues to be the king of MMORPGs nearly 20 years after its initial release.

Dragonflight Breathes New Life into WoW

The recently launched Dragonflight expansion provides a bounty of fresh experiences, even for longtime veterans like myself. The new dragonriding feature breathes new life into exploration, with aerial maneuvers and customizable drake mounts. I‘ve had a blast diving off cliffs and soaring through the skies across the Dragon Isles.

The redesigned talent tree system also allows more customization of your character‘s abilities than ever before. I‘ve enjoyed experimenting with weird builds like a Frost Mage that can tank. Dragonriding and the talent trees demonstrate that WoW still has new tricks up its sleeve.

In terms of content, Dragonflight has something for everyone:

  • 5 new zones to quest through with beautiful vistas
  • 8 dungeons with unique dragon-themed bosses
  • A new 12-boss raid pitting players against the Primal Incarnates
  • Updated professions and crafting recipes to master
  • Tons of secrets, collectibles, achievements, and side activities

I‘ve already sunk over 100 hours into Dragonflight and still have much more to explore. This expansion was exactly the fresh coat of paint WoW needed.

Endgame Content Keeps You Coming Back

WoW has also always excelled at endgame content to keep you engaged long after you hit the new max level cap. I generally spend my nights either running mythic+ dungeons, climbing the ranks in 2v2 arenas, or raiding with my guild.

Mythic+ dungeons continue to have an almost infinite amount of replayability, increasing in difficulty each week with new seasonal affixes. My arena partner and I are currently rated at 2100, aiming for Hero of the Alliance. And my guild just cleared the Dragonflight raid on Heroic and is now preparing for Mythic difficulty.

There are leaderboards, rankings, and rewards to chase after for PvE and PvP players alike. I appreciate that both casual and hardcore players have plenty to work towards.

WoW Community Is Alive and Well

While WoW doesn‘t have quite as many players as its peak, millions still log in every day. The world continues to feel lively and bustling with activity. Major cities have players dueling and showing off new armor transmogs. The latest raid and dungeons remain highly active with groups forming instantly.

And I‘ve found it very easy to make new friends and connections through daily play. I used the new Communities feature to join groups for pet battles and transmog runs. And I‘ve met cool people just from joining random dungeon groups or helping someone out in the open world. The community makes logging in each night relaxing and fun.

Flexible Payment Model

As someone with a busy job, I appreciate that WoW offers a flexible payment model. I don‘t feel pressured to play for huge hours every week to justify a subscription cost. I can take breaks when needed and catch up quickly with all the helpful systems like catch-up gear.

And when I‘m really engrossed in a new raid tier or PvP season, I generally play WoW around 16 hours per week, which comes out to under $1 per hour of entertainment. I find that to be a bargain compared to going to the movies every month.

The ability to pay for subscriptions with in-game gold is also genius, allowing me to play for free if I farm enough gold on the auction house.

Blizzard‘s Continued Commitment

Based on the way Blizzard supports the game, it‘s clear they are in it for the long haul. The WoW team has already outlined content updates planned for the rest of 2024 and into 2024. That includes new raids, dungeons, events, QoL improvements, and more.

Interviews with WoW developers also discuss future expansion ideas they are working on. Ion Hazzikostas stated that they have plans mapped out for "many years to come." Knowing Blizzard actively develops so much for the future reassures me that WoW won‘t be going away anytime soon.

Worth Returning For Lapses Players

As someone who has taken multiple breaks from WoW over the years, I always find coming back worthwhile. Jumping into fresh content revitalizes the experience. And Blizzard does a great job helping returning players catch-up quickly.

For example, when I returned for Dragonflight after sitting out Shadowlands, I used the new level boost item to instantly get a max-level character. I was then able to dive right into the new zones and features. Don‘t be afraid to return to Azeroth after months away!

Tips for New Players

For those considering playing WoW for the very first time, I have some tips:

  • Find a class that appeals to your playstyle using the class trial feature
  • Focus just on your main storyline quests as you level to avoid being overwhelmed
  • Join leveling guilds to ask questions and make friends along the way
  • Don‘t worry about optimal builds while leveling, just experiment and have fun
  • Disable general chat to avoid confusion and toxicity from other players
  • Absorb the world details, don‘t just rush to endgame

Take the time to really settle into your character and enjoy the journey. Endgame will still be there waiting for you at max level.

WoW Classic Can Scratch a Nostalgia Itch

I should also mention that WoW Classic and Wrath of the Lich King Classic realms can be great options for revisiting nostalgic versions of the game. I actually maintained a Classic character in tandem with my retail characters for a while.

Jumping between modern WoW and Classic WoW provides two very different gameplay experiences. If you miss the slower pace and community feel of early WoW, Classic realms capture that wonderfully.

Stacked Up Against Other MMOs

Compared directly against newer MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online, WoW still holds up incredibly well in 2024. The combat and visuals might not be quite as flashy, but WoW makes up for it with top-notch encounters, raids, and a more established community.

And while the upfront box cost of those games is lower, the optional WoW subscription ends up being cheaper long-term in my experience. Overall, WoW provides the complete package of a thriving MMO.

With exciting new expansions, refined endgame content, a welcoming community, and Blizzard‘s continued support, World of Warcraft absolutely remains worth playing in 2024. I wholeheartedly recommend either jumping in for the first time or returning from a break. You have so many adventures still ahead in Azeroth.
