Overview – Just You and Me Against the Cards

The goal of 21 is simple – get your card total as close to 21 as possible without going over. Face cards are worth 10 points, Aces are worth 1 or 11, and all other cards are their pip value. Whoever has the hand total closest to 21 wins!

When it‘s just two people playing, you take turns being the dealer to pitch the cards. You can also designate one player as permanent dealer.

I find playing head-to-head 21 to be more fun and fast paced than playing against a house dealer. You get into each hand quicker and can adapt your strategy based on what your friend is showing. Let‘s go over the basics…

How to Play

To start, the dealer shuffles the deck and the other player cuts the cards. This ensures no stacking! Both players then place their initial bet.

The dealer deals one card face up to the player, then one face up to themselves. Next, a second card face up to the player and a second card face down for the dealer.

So the dealer has one face up card you can see the value of, and one hidden. Now it‘s time for you to play out your hand!

Player Turn

Looking at your first two cards, you have several choices:

• Hit – Take another card from the dealer to get your total closer to 21. You can hit as many times as you want. But beware going over 21!

• Stand – Stick with your cards and end your turn.

• Double Down – Double your bet and receive exactly one more card. Power move when you‘re sitting at a strong total.

• Split – If your first two cards are the same value, split them into two hands! Your bet applies to both.

Playing against just one person, I like to take more chances doubling down and splitting. The odds are more in your favor than playing against a dealer.

Once you go bust over 21, your turn is over and the dealer flips their down card.

Dealer‘s Turn

The dealer now reveals their hidden card and draws until their total meets or exceeds 17.

• Dealer must hit on 16 or lower
• Dealer must stand on 17 or more

If the dealer busts and you didn‘t, you win! Otherwise, highest hand total under 21 wins.

21 Strategy – How to Win More Hands

Making the right moves in 21 requires applying some blackjack strategy:

• Always split Aces & 8s – This gives you the best statistical chance of winning.

• Take hits on 12-16 when the dealer is showing 2-6. The dealer likely has to draw more cards, increasing chances they bust.

• Stand on 17 or higher. The odds say the dealer will eventually beat you if you keep taking hits.

• Double soft hands like Ace-6. Soft means having an Ace as it gives you flexibility on totals.

These tips optimize your chances mathematically, but also consider what your friend is showing when making decisions. Is their upcard a 2? Maybe deviate from the chart and stand instead of hitting against a likely weak hand.

Hand 1

You are dealt a 7 and a 9, for a total of 16. The dealer is showing a Queen.

Following basic strategy, you hit and receive a 4. Your new total is 20 and you stand.

The dealer flips over their down card, revealing a 5. Their total is now 15. They hit and get an 8, bringing them to 23 – bust!

You win this hand since your 20 stood while the dealer busted.

Hand 2

You are dealt an Ace and a Jack, for a natural 21 or Blackjack!

The dealer has a King showing. They flip over their down card to reveal a 4, for a total of 14.

You stand on your 21 and win the hand automatically when the dealer reveals they did not also have Blackjack.

Avoid Common 21 Mistakes

As a beginner, it‘s easy to make some miscues that will cost you hands:

• Taking insurance when the dealer shows an Ace. Never take this side bet! The odds are overwhelmingly against you.

• Not splitting Aces and 8s. This is a blackjack no-no. Always split these pairs to maximize your chances.

• Assuming you need to hit until you reach 21. Staying PUT on a good hand is often the better move, even if you‘re sitting at 17.

• Forgetting soft and hard totals. An Ace-6 (soft 17) should be played differently than a 7-10 (hard 17).

• Not considering what the dealer is showing. This is more important head-to-head than against the house. Their upcard dictates your optimal plays.
